I am still using Juice, myself, simply because all it does is download them and nothing more. My primary use is for downloading free music from last.fm (my recommended downloads feed). I'd like something similar but with the ability to handle unicode file names, which cause Juice to fail.

Can you confirm that you're running build 65 please?

Yes, I am. Just downloaded it today to give it a first try. No previous version before now.

Are these settings supposed to be fully functional yet?

  • No matter what you set the option to, it will always show the splash screen.
  • Run when Windows starts doesn't work.
  • Minimize to tray on close works to send it to the tray once, but upon restoring it from the tray, you can't click the buttons to minimize to taskbar or close it back to tray...and all the rest of the controls are disabled. If you minimize it after by clicking the taskbar button instead, then restore it by clicking the taskbar button again, the buttons are clickable again, but the close button doesn't do anything.

Have you tried Newzie? It has a few different view styles you can toggle between, designed for getting through your feeds faster. It does subfolders and is quite good at handling a large number of feeds (I have around 300).

And if you want to fuss with it and install it, it can use gecko instead of IE's engine for it's browser.

a mini Swiss Army knife, which one should never leave home without.

Unless you're going to a "secure" government building or a commercial airline flight.

I had a Swiss Army Knife on my keychain but took it off after doing the above too many times.

I have never had a problem with mine, and even used it on the last flight I took, to cut embroidery thread for the sewing project I took with me.

The mini one's scissors are well under the 4 inch blade length allowed.

Of course I did toss it in the clear plastic bag containing the kit, in my purse, rather than keeping it in my pocket or on my keychain. That might be why I was allowed to keep it with me.  ;)

One of the apps I can't live without is a tiny, always on top clock that I made. (Despite having a desktop PC with a large widescreen monitor, I still like my taskbar hidden)

Screenshot - 11_26_2010 , 8_46_26 PM.png

Size & colors can be user configured and you can position it anywhere you want. You are not restricted to which part of the screen to place it on...only restricted to not being able to move it off the screen of your main display (not entirely multi-monitor friendly)

Sponsored research or research by someone with their own agenda can be a really dangerous thing, and sometimes the person reading about it doesn't know, or doesn't know the entire truth about it.

Take the "research" that was done that connected vaccinations with autism. The doctor that did it was paid to do it...by a lawyer that was looking for a connection for one of his clients. The "results" were spread around all over the place, with parents believing it and being afraid to vaccinate their kids. Now the medical journals the "study" was published in took a better look at it and pulled it. They refuse to accept it as a valid study for a whole bunch of reasons above and beyond the obvious conflict of interest of being paid by a lawyer to find specific results.

But there are still tons of parents that are made to believe that it's still truth and being told by quacks that there is some pharmaceutical company cover-up involved...and they are not vaccinating their children.

Meanwhile, there is a rise in the number of preventable diseases among children, a rise in the permanent disabilities they cause, and in deaths. And those that can't have the vaccines for various reasons such as allergies and other medical conditions, no longer can rely on herd immunity to protect them because the herd isn't protected any more. And as these kids grow up, it will affect the next generation worse, as a return to things like birth defects caused by Congenital Rubella Syndrome returns to developed nations. (yeah, sometimes the vaccines aren't to protect the child that gets vaccinated, and are instead meant to protect unborn children that could be exposed to a virus while in the womb)

Living Room / Re: My Canon IP5000 inkjet is dead :( What now?
« Last post by app103 on November 24, 2010, 12:50 AM »
i had an hp before i had my canon pixma, and i don't think ill ever go back, canon has been a joy to use.
5 years is a long life for an inkjet, especially given costs of inks vs cost of machine. if it were me, unless it is an expensive wide format printer i'd just dump it and get a new one.

Once upon a time I had an HP that I loved and I cried when it died.

The replacement was also an HP and I'll never own another one again. In order to clean it, you have to buy a $20 single use contraption direct from HP and this one needed it right out of the box, which HP would not send me for free. Without it, it either eats the whole stack of paper or won't auto-feed the paper at all. You have to feed the paper in manually, one sheet at a time. (oh, what an acrobatic act that is, to hit print and then run to the printer to feed the paper in)

I believe HP also have inkjet printers now that have much cheaper ink costs (I think they had a bad rep before).

My first HP printer had the expensive jumbo ink cartridges that lasted over a year and gave you tons of prints (I think my daughter printed out everything she viewed on the internet when we first got it). The HP from hell had the cheaper ones...they are much smaller capacity, don't last much more than a month, and they are prone to "drying out". (put one in, don't print anything for a few weeks, and you get the out of ink notification)

IMHO, the much more expensive ones were a much better deal. The printers they make now days are disposable...toss it when it runs out of ink and buy yourself a new printer instead of replacement ink cartridges. They cost about the same any way.

Oh, and if anyone in the US needs an older HP ink cartridge, I still have one to give away.

Try this:

That would do the opposite of what he wants...it will run stuff when the PC is idle rather than when the pc comes out of an idle state.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Internet disconnection logger
« Last post by app103 on November 21, 2010, 05:15 PM »
ISP sent me a new modem/router...again. It's a different model than the last one...a Westell 7500. It feels cheaply made and runs mighty hot to the touch without even doing anything. I hope it doesn't melt under a heavy load. It also seems my connection is a little slower with it than with the last one.

Now it's just a matter of waiting and seeing what happens. If I can consistently have a max of only one disconnection per day, I'll consider the problem solved (yes I know most of you probably get disconnected much less frequently than once a day, but compared to what I have gone through for the past 2 years, only once a day is a far fetched dream)

Site/Forum Features / Re: Can one "subscibe" to another member?"
« Last post by app103 on November 20, 2010, 12:15 AM »
Well, it's pretty simple.

So, let's say I know someone from DC, and I want to follow them, and I know they are also on twitter, last.fm, have a blog, etc. but they don't have a friendfeed account, so I can't follow them there. On friendfeed, I set up an "imaginary friend" by making a new group and setting it to be private (my eyes only) and add all the services info so it pulls all that publicly accessible stuff into one page, but also pulls it into a category page I set up where I have all the rest of my DC friends (including ones that joined friendfeed), and pulls it into my home feed where all the stuff and people I am following are displayed.

It's pretty good for keeping up with people that won't join the service, that way you don't have to bounce between a million sites to keep up with what they are posting all over the web.

If you would like to try it out, I could help you, guide you along. Just join friendfeed, subscribe to me, I'll subscribe back and then we can chat privately in real-time through a direct message (you won't be able to message me till I subscribe back).

Gotta warn you though...

  • it is a social networking site, but you don't have to use it as such.
  • it is owned by facebook, although it has a completely different privacy policy

if you decide to subscribe to real friendfeed users...the culture is quite different than facebook

  • much more community oriented (a lot like here)
  • much more discussion oriented (a lot like here)
  • full of quite intelligent geeky people with a wacky sense of humor (a lot like here)
  • and it is an uncensored free speech zone, where people rarely mark stuff as NSFW and someone may post something you could find offensive, and your only recourse is to click the link to hide the item, unsubscribe from the person, or block them if the stuff is coming through the "friend of a friend" feature.

And this invitation is open to any DC member that wants my assistance, just let me know who you are so I subscribe back and put you on my DC list.

I do, but in a non-traditional social feed reader that is perfect for this type of thing. I use friendfeed's private group feature to create "imaginary friends" to follow that nobody but me can see. I add feeds and user names from various sites and services, give them an avatar, and it's just as if they had signed up on the site and made an account...but only I can see it.

N.A.N.Y. 2010 / Re: NANY 2010 Release: Open Menu
« Last post by app103 on November 19, 2010, 08:37 PM »
My daughter had an idea that could make Open Menu Search much more useful. She asked me who around here delivers, besides the obvious Chinese & pizza. She wished there was a restaurant search engine that could answer that. When I checked the advanced search on Open Menu, I noticed there was no options for it.

In advanced search, you should include check boxes for delivery and take-out, so if someone only wants to see all the places in their neighborhood that will deliver, they can easily do that.

If you are willing to use an RSS reader, this can be done by using the members ID number as explained here.

Maybe mouser could add it to the RSS autodiscovery on profile pages so when you click the RSS icon in the addressbar of your browser, it will be listed in the options.

prstorm is a black hat spammer's tool used to spam the referrer logs of websites in an effort to somehow create backlinks to their own sites for SEO purposes, if a host publishes the referrer logs (I don't know many that do). It hammers servers sometimes 50 times a minute.

Now I don't know what you need to clean from your urls, but I am not likely to help you if you plan on using prstorm, and I am not sure anyone else on this forum would either.

Living Room / Re: iPod - tell me why I should buy one
« Last post by app103 on November 17, 2010, 11:53 AM »
This is based on information from my daughter, who owned an older iPod and opted for a Sony to replace it, because she categorizes iTunes as malware.

The goodThe bad
iPod
  • large storage capacity
  • long battery life
  • ipod touch runs apps (like an iphone without the phone)
  • more accessories available for them (docking systems, etc)
  • repairable (easier to find some place that would be willing to fix it)
  • itunes
  • app store
  • not cheap
  • can't use while wearing gloves
  • changes file names to strings of random numbers when adding music
Sony Walkman NWZS545BLK
  • no itunes
  • drag & drop files on it from explorer (there is software, but you don't have to use it)
  • drag & drop files off it to another machine
  • external speaker
  • fm radio
  • recording abilities
  • good capacity
  • long battery life
  • plays videos
  • store images
  • can use while wearing gloves
  • keeps file names when adding music
  • cheaper than an ipod
  • speaker quality isn't that good at loud volumes
  • radio can be fuzzy without headphones and not too good when moving around

Her conclusions:

If the idea of iTunes or the app store doesn't bother you, and you can afford it, an iPod is a really nice player to have. If you want to save a little money, avoid iTunes, want something simpler, or want the ability to transfer files off your player to another computer, get something else.

She is very happy with her Sony, but would consider owning another iPod, if it wasn't for the whole iTunes thing.

Don't get a false sense of security from the ratings of any download site. And don't get the idea that the bigger more popular ones with a not so stellar rating are inserting malware into known good software (a few people were afraid to download my software from Brothersoft based on a bad rating on the site for malware, thinking it meant that Brothersoft was deliberately infecting all the software they listed with crap, when that just wasn't true.)

There are very few PAD driven download sites on the internet that are 100% free of malware and spyware. Just like any other developers, malware/spyware makers submit PAD files to download sites and they get automatically added to the databases. Very few download sites go through the trouble of analyzing the software they list. I do not place any sort of trust in any of the download sites. I always research everything before downloading and scan it once it is downloaded, no matter what site it comes from.

Just do your homework for each app you are considering and you should be ok.

There was a thread about it, but it was more in reference to a particular video someone made.

Mouser thought it would be great idea to make some stuff making fun of DC with it, so I went ahead and made this one, based on a conversation from the DC IRC channel.  :D
