Author's CommentsAs a big fan of the popular TV series The Big Bang Theory (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0898266/), I had been bothered by the fact that despite there are literally a ton of fun quotes from the show, there was just no app (such as soundboards) on the market that chose to offer beyond the tiny, less-than-meaningful audio snippets. The objective of this app is to fill the gap, by neatly presenting a large library of the very best sound quotes, snippets and associated info from the show, and give mobile users something to truly enjoy on the go.

Netbooks are small notebooks that offer neither true processing power or genuine portability/mobility.

They are losing market shares quickly to Apple/Android tablets for very good reasons -- such neither here nor there devices are not really sought after.

Yes we all can. However the reason that you buy into iPads or Apple stuff in general, is probably not to say "I can do ABC", but to say "I now do ABC in this fashion, with better accessibility/portability and less hassle, etc.".

Carrying and tethering a data-enabled phone to an iPad contradicts the convenience principle and disturbs the peace of mind, especially when you have to remember to worry about the battery status on your phone every once in a while. :)

From my experience buying a tablet, any tablet, without 3G support is a very bad idea. Being able to access content and stay in touch anywhere anytime is essential.

I use my iPads heavily for:
Online/offline GPS nav, gaming, Ebook reading, music, video streaming over Wifi/3G, Ebay, banking, Doc processing, SSH, RDP, public transport tracking (real-time), SVN access/source viewing, Podcasts/Vodcasts, Youtube, Skype, Gtalk, Google+, VPN, and ofc, to control my beloved AR Drone. :D

Idiots with more money than sense who buys these things are these who have no idea how to utilise an iPad beyond web surfing and music.

But yes attachment handling on iOS is crap, Android does bit way better.

Do not count on any NAS product to serve as a proper DLNA server. The CPU/memory power on these devices are so limited that they will highly unlikely be able to transcode much of anything on the fly... they might, at best, demux/remux media streams inside existing media container files.

Their cafeteria-style shops seemed a tad odd the first time I went in, but I've bought a truckload of stuff there and certainly saved over the few other stores that I'm familiar with here. (I probably know Georgetown better than I know Melbourne.)

Their Mitcham store is better, they have shelves/tables with the equipment, (MB, case, router, etc), stacked on so you can pick and choose, (not the RAM/CPU/SSD/HDD though).

I went to Mitcham branch and bought the last two RND4000 there last Sunday.

Not all branches maintain stock for 4-bay NAS, so ring them up before you get there.

I found RND4000 to be well designed and built, and delivers what I ask from it (storage size >= 8TB, SMB write speed >= 25MB/s, quiet operations).

For me it qualifies as a great NAS.

a few things before I go:

1. This NAS is feature-rific and can be quite powerful
2. Onboard RAM can even be upgraded if you run a lot of stuff on the NAS
3. Make sure you have Gigabit network connectivity
4. Avoid Samsung drives at all costs, buy WD or Seagate

4 x 2TB 3.5" seems to the most cost-efficient configuration IMHO. RND4000 will not support 3TB drives atm.

NAS = $299
HDDs = 4 * $82 = $328

There you go a complete NAS for AUD $627.

And don't forget to get an 8-port Gigabit switch there if you don't have one already. TP-Link one sells for $44.

^2.5" drives are currently too costly per GB and most NAS appliances are not designed to load these drives, but hey they are much "greener" for sure.

No... a NAS like RND4000 is solidly built, compact and designed to run 24/7 reliably and (power) efficiently, whereas for your old boxes, no matter how much efforts you spend on them, will be neither.

MSY are not retail stores in any traditional sense, instead they are warehouse outlets with limited and intermittently available customer advising/consulting. It's an outrage to pay twice the amount at more popular tech stores for the reason that they offer essentially the same product and level of service. I will not buy at one of these stores unless it passes four levels of price comparisons:

1. International eBay
2. Domestic eBay
3. Reputable non-eBay online shopping sites (such as COTD, TopBuy, CrazySales, etc.)
4. MSY or the stores next to MSY.

I don't remember the last time I bought anything from Dick Smith, JB-HiFi, or any similar tech retail stores.


In this case I suggest that you just ring MSY up to check and reserve stock and pick them up. Last weekend I checked every piece of info available to me before finally deciding to empty MSY's 4-bay NAS stock at Mitcham branch.

For a brand-new ReadyNAS RV+ RND4000, MSY could have charged you somewhere like $340 and have it still appear as the best option on the market.

I recommend it because it's cheap ($299).

I have 4 of these at home (8TB each, WD Green 2TB x 4) in addition to the my original 4 TeraStation Pro IIs (8TB each), and use them heavily on daily basis.

I run RAID 0 on all NAS and I can tell you that for me price is the only difference that makes...
