mouser, maybe you should clarify. What it sounds like is someone, like App103, may deliver something that DC chooses not to use. Is that the case?

Also, no offense, but you're never going to get things right (or done) if you allow everyone to have an equal voice in what does or doesn't get created.  Design/development by committee just never works.

IMO if App had done a Wordpress based website it would probably work great for years and bring much joy to the community instead this being in discussions for months, development for a year (if a solution is chosen where solid development work is required) and in the end maybe have something that works but is difficult to maintain by a non-developer.

If someone is ready, willing and able to provide a solid solution what's the harm on taking them up on it.  Put your trust in what they will deliver and be happy to have something better (maybe perfect).  Hell, just getting someone to volunteer to complete an entire project is difficult, don't pass it up.

Think of it this way: what ever is delivered probably buys you years to work on other things.

My personal feeling is SMF's days are numbered.  The code base is just not a modern way of developing.  Having plugins/modules changes core code is, yikes, not the way to do it.

I can't speak for mouser but the maintenance from version to version must be a nightmare.

Maybe its time to take a look under the hood of Wordpress.  It's so far beyond a blogging platform that its almost unfair to call it that anymore.  It is a true CMS system capable of some very powerful things.

I did the Wordpress plugin for OpenMenu and never found a point where I couldn't get it to do exactly what I needed, natively, using their hooks.

This is where it gets hard to compare. I know very little about Drupal so me making the comparison is difficult.   You may be correct about getting Drupal to do *anything* but the question is, does it come at a price of complexity where Wordpress will do everything you *need* without the complexity.

Totally agree with you about maintaining a consistent architecture to DC so if Drupal is used elsewhere it does make much more sense to continue using it in other parts as well.

Gotcha.  I just didn't know if there was something under the hood that made Drupal play nice with others while Wordpress didn't.  Basically its a comfort thing.

I see.  IMO, Drupal is not a user-friendly CMS and the solution I gave was for app103 based on her creating, managing and maintaining it.  Just don't think Drupal fits that requirement.

Just curious: Why does Drupal integrate better than Wordpress?  Is there something in the Drupal framework that aids in bridging to other systems?

Custom Post Types and Taxonomies makes Wordpress powerful while remaining user/developer friendly.

Something else to look into:

Basically create a Post Type of Software and use Taxonomies for categories.

This is a great collection of applications for someone looking to quickly create a portfolio and online presence.

The reason for selling is I want to give it to someone who has a vested interest to maintain them and keep the applications going.  If I was to just give them away it would be very difficult to vet out the right person who isn't just looking to get free code and assets.  The price in my head is what I consider a nominal fee to ensure some vested interest, it no where near reflects the 1000's of hours of development work that has gone into the applications.

I'm doing this because I shifted my time to focus on two things: Development work for Veign and OpenMenu.  Trying to stop spreading myself so thin.  Doesn't make sense and every part suffers.  Also, my head, and heart, is not into desktop development anymore.

I couldn't give you numbers on what you'll make as my apps have been donationware, freeware and postcardware.  What someone does with it is up to them.

Just wanted to quickly clarify something.  You don't have to be a professional developer.  Selling the rights to someone who needs a 'jump start' for their development career is not a problem.  I don't mind selling this to someone looking to learn and for a push.

My thought was that this route would give a developer a solid foundation to get their name out in the wild.  Since all rights will be transferred Veign can be removed from the code, and all mentions.

I didn't want someone getting involved in an Open Source licensing issue.  This sales comes with 0 restrictions.  Code is theirs to do with what they please.

Hopefully someone will take me up on the offer so the apps don't just die the slow death you mention.

Cfont Pro, Seeker, Note-It and Pixeur have done really well and are still actively downloaded.  This is a great way for someone to get a huge jump in desktop development with some powerful, and mature, applications that are not bound to an Open Source licensing.  They will be able to set the direction of the applications.

I've decided to sell of all of the applications developed by Veign.

What I'm selling:
- All applications
- All Source code and application assets (graphics, installers and information)
- Cfont Pro's website: http://www.cfontpro.com/

There will be no restrictions once the sale is completed.  You will be able to do what you want with the applications.  Currently they are all donationware but if you want to make them into shareware applications that would be your choice.

I've thought about turning them into Open Source but I don't think that would work with these applications.  Hate to see the 1000's of hours of work go down the drain because my focus has shifted to web development only.

Feel free to ask any questions you want in this thread except price (that will be discussed in private via email).

Open Menu Search is really just a proof of concept.  At some point I will include more searching options but for now I'm working with other companies on getting their systems Open Menu compliant.  I'm hoping to release a mobile application next year which will include all the advanced search stuff.

Question for you though - in your applications, do you FORCE the end user to print it out and submit it, or do you also provide a way to submit online as well.  The former is where I have problems, the later is completely desirable (in my opinion).

All applications have PDFs to download and print.  Applications are being converted to online version but that takes time and money and some applications simply don't have enough applicants to justify an online version.

No. Everything gets more expensive.  You don't know the financial impact on an organization/company by automating, or eliminating, paper forms.  You're in no position to say that the reduced cost of forms hasn't caused a lesser increase in costs somewhere else within the organization.  It probably has.

The fact of the world we live in.  Technology moves us forward and with that comes changes to the way things are done.  It's not always a 'gotcha' or 'gonna screw you over' thing.  Its things moving forward.

There are things I do now that have no other way but electronic.  If you don't have access they provide it in the office.

Sounds very typical of most places now a days.  I get most of my 'forms' online.  Most have fields setup so I can complete the form, print, and save a backup in my electronic file system - IMO, much easier to deal with.

oppression?  Little harsh.   I see it as advancement of technologies...

The new Open Menu Account system is live.  Accounts are free and get you access to the new and improved Online Menu Creator. The Open Menu Account system will become the basis for new tools and features for members of Open Menu.

Please check it out.  Let me know what you think keeping in mind that this is the base and the only tool available is the second version of the Open Menu Creator.
