Strangely enough......
 yes a few times, but,   I read I believe it was your post, about superior SU, installed it had to create a second user and in the explorer shell it was there??   I swaped back to my blackbox shell still logged on as me and it was back the way it is supposed to be. Amazing. thanks for the link will post in that topic too.

I think you misunderstood,  The pane is still there, but it is all grey, as in VisualBasic app window grey.  The close button is ther, on the top right corner of the pane, and the grippie is there, but the hollowed out part where "web Content, or folders is supposed to be is solid and un-hollowed out in the folder view setting See attached .png (thanks Screenshot Captor)

Hi all does anyone know why I would have lost the folder view in win explorer after updating windows 2k?
I rarely use explorer anymore, but when I do I use the folder (in sidebar) view exclusively, so this really kind of stinks.  Any suggestions?

Not the same type of program, but one I love is File Targets by moonsoftware. Extends the file menu in explorer with a configurable list of folders, groups of folders, and last selected folder to either copy to, or move a file, or folder to.  I find it indispensible.  Really blows away the copy to/ move to entries that M.S. wasted the space for.  Best of all.......YUP FREE

Hi Malacandra,
  Sorry it took me so long to respond to your post, I've been installing a new hraddrive in my laptop for a few days now and took a while to find all the favorites for firefox.  Anyway thanks for posting this it's exactly what I've been looking for, I love blackbox and hardly ever use explorer for anything, however sometimes I just don't have time to update my menu and have trouble finding something, or need to use explorer for something quicklike and to have to shutdown and reboot to get there is a real pita.
 Again thanks alot and also thanks to Edvard who gave the idea some thought as well.

How about a simple commznd line switch, ie; ffr.exe/m to load a config file for music searches, or ffr.exe /j for jpegs, or whatever. You all must know by now That I'm no coder but  it may be possible to have a main config that doesn't change and append a certain search criteria at run time. or drag and drop support, drag a file type onto the window, and program searches for that type of file.

That is a nice program mouser, I have used it in the past.  I stopped using quite some time ago due to it's memory usage which at the time was quite high for the machine I was running it on.  It has many nice faatures that you'll quickly get used to and then miss when they're not there.  I don't know how it's been updated since I gave it up as to the way it hogs memory.  Maybe I'll give it another shot as it has been about three years and I've also upgraded my memory since then.  Thanks for the link.

I think vevola,
  That in either gpedit.msc, or secpol.msc there is an option to remember last user.  Someone might verify this (for some reason I'm getting an error while trying to bring it up).
If I remember right many of the windows tweaking programs offer this option as well.
If you mainly use the one account you would have to do the finding the cursor thing only when you decided to use the other account.

How to Hide the Name of the Last User Who Logged On

If you share your Windows XP computers with other users who have their own accounts, you might want to change the default behavior which automatically displays the account name of the user who logged on most frequently, and have the logon dialog box just start as a "blank slate." To do this on an XP Pro computer:

   1. Click Start | Run and type gpedit.msc to open the Group Policy Editor console.
   2. In the left pane, navigate to and click Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local Policies | Security Options.
   3. In the right pane, locate and double click the item labeled Interactive logon: Do not display last user name.
   4. Click the option button to enable the policy.
   5. Click Apply and then click OK.

Disabling this if it is enabled will give you the result i explained above.
XP home?  Idunno.

The reason I mentioned the .ini file, or whatever the case the modifications made per program are going to be stored........ neveremind,  I get it. See last line in post about notifying companys about software mentioned here

You could use tabs for easy overview of multiple windows to allow editing of hotkeys to avoid multiple different combinations for the same action(easier to see), cut and paste for creating new cheatsheets, or use them to draw focus to the selected app, kind of like an all purpose hotkey/taskbar  (click on tab marked program x small tab of hotkeys drops down-->window gains focus)

Optionaly you could have one cheatsheet that stored the location of each individual programs .ini file and read the hotkey combinations from it then lets say someone added, or changed a hotkey for the program, your program would be updated automatically.  Another feature that would be nice is if it was docked to the side of the screen, or bottom, or top, is to have a tabbed interface. I use firefox like tenseiken and can't hardly operate a program without tabs and middle clicking the mouse anymore.

I just use the one built into firefox.  There's a plugin that allows you to export all of firefox's bookmarks to IE automagically.  Both are free, of course.

Have you ever looked at the bookmarks.html file in your profile folder?  I wanted to include my bookmarks as links on a webpage and opened the file up.  Holy cow, I don't know what firefox stores there, the links all worked but some of the stuff attached to the links was outrageous.  I mean to delete one link while viewing the html code and holding the delete key down till the end of the line I bet it took no less than five minutes.

If anyone knows exactly why the links were so long, I would like to know.  For example, does firefox store visit to page info there, or cookie info along with the url?  It was all 'Gibbrish' to me but where this is a site for people who know "code" maybe someone here knows the answer to my query.

duh,  YA I KNEW THAT  When looking through (oh, by the way I did know that, but I forgot it) the server management panel it listed the services running as running on the address of the lan connection, mysql however isn't loaded through the config panel so it doesn't show up there.  When I run EssentialNet Tools port scanner on the server box from the laptop I see that the port is open.  That doesn't mean however that I'm having any luck accessing the sql part from either the local network, or from the internet, but then again I've never even seen the inside of an sql database let alone tried to administer one.  I have alot of reading to do.  Thankfully the project I'm setting it up for isn't on a deadline.

regarding the link in the top menu for "links"  great idea.  I can't imagine anyone not having room for it, I'm running a laptop w/ a small screen and the headings only go about halfway across.  I am aware that there may be visually impaired viewers to the site and I have no idea of how a person with such a limitation has their screen setup, but I'm personally all for it.

I'm trying to set up mySql on Windows Server 2003 and I'm having a bit of a problem.  When I launch the Sql(at machine startup) it attaches itself to the localhost 127.0.0.1.  I can connect to it while running locally, but a web app that needs the data cannot connect to it. 
  I'm new to all this server business, I may simply be overlooking something in the server setup part of it, but it would be nice if there was a utility that would detach a process from one port and adapter and connect it to another. If there is such an app I would like to know about it.

I definately agree with Scott on this topic.  I think that you handle the thanking very well (at least prior to the form letter machine ).  I think it might be a good idea to put a small indicator on the donations page that you could update weekly that says
 " Donation Coders budget is currently in the RED"  or
  " Donation Coders budget is currently in theBlack           

So people would know if the need for donations was vital at the moment.
I would personally rather give to a cause that is genuinely in need than one that isn't.  I don't know if that would help out with new donors, but if I saw a red marker as  a member who visits almost daily, I'd give again.  That might prompt you to update the date at the bottom of the donations page regularly to show when the need arose so people wouldn't think you set the page up with a red marker and left it that way.

  If I remember right,(Too Tired to go digging around right now) I think you have a couple free copies of the VM Ware still kicking around.  How about a raffle of one of those to be awarded randomly to one of the first twenty five or so people to donate over $20 or more. Maybe more people, maybe $40 I think Publicized drawings for stuff are the way to go.  Granted just a donation will entitle the donor to great discounts on other highly recommended applications, but it's hard to turn up something free and something thats a good deal together.  Also I think publicizing the current Member discounts on the home page would attract, well at least interest some of the non-donating visitors to give it some more thought.  A regular or planned raffle of a free copy of 1 or 2 of anything you end up with would probably even help persuade previous donors to give again. Anyway that's my two cents, and to set a good example for all who read this I've gone from here to the paypal link to give a little more.  This is a great site with a world-class philosophy and I for one would like to see it do well.

Well,
  Thank you all for your replies.  I guess I' m on the right path, I frequent the bookstores when I have time and hover in the programming section. I usually read through the first two chapters of a book each time I go and have found a few that seem like I could follow them through and get something out of them.  The biggest problem is trying to decide wether I want to program for linux, or windows.  I don't know if it matters from a choosing of the flavor standpoint but I'm seriously leaning toward linux solely because I think it is starting to get really close to becoming a viable contender for the average user to be able to handle.
 Secondly because When you download a FREE Distribution of almost any Linux it comes with what compares to about $7500 worth of editors, compilers and whatnot that I wouldn't have to buy to run on windows.

Hey Mouser, and others.
  If you could recommmend only one text, or book for someone with absolutely zero c, or c++ knowledge to read as their first venture into programming (in my case besides "introduction to basic" which I took 25 years ago in High school.) what would it be.  Also would that be a good place to start?  I know that python and delphi have been mentioned as easier languages to learn, but for me, (I'll probably only learn 1 or 2 languages before I die if I start now,) so from a functionality and compatibility stand point what languages do you see sticking around for a while and staying competitive for the forseeable future?

EDIT:  I probably should have put this in the "Teach Yourself C" Main forum instead of a reply,  feel free to move it, I couldn't figure out how.

 As I have just ventured away fro Explorer with xplorer2(Squared)  I notice it doesn't work there.
  I know that with a windows<- out of the box-> , before the improvements are put on disk, this is the first thing I install.

  How long has this site been here Mouser?  I regularly visit shellcity and it was mentioned there on todays post,  It seems like with the amount of content here it's not all that old.  Not a rip, just wondering if it's been here a while, and how long it's going to last.  The site looks good and looks like it has some serious promise.

The absolute most usefull piece of software that i have (and I believe it's free) is File Targets. It lets you move , or copy files from the context menu according to your liking. It's very configurable, and easy to use.  besides that it saves hours of copying and pasting.  The only function I wish was added was the ability to move installed apps to another directory or drive kinda like Iomega's 'AppMover' used to do.
