it loads slower than Notepad++
Depends on your configuration.

but I always forget the keystrokes
"ci}", "change inner }-block". Easier to understand than some weird Alt-Arrow-Metakey-Whirl-around-and-sing hotkeys.

I guess.

Handle huge files efficiently? :)
Works. (Depending on your definition of "huge", but you should figure out first what a "text editor" is intended to do for you.)

At what cost, though? Between spending $20 on a text editor and 2 years on figuring out the basics of (g)vi(m), I'n not even hesitating :)
A steep learning curve is common to most today's text editors. But Vim has a tutorial for that. Built-in.  :)

There's something to be said for Shift+nav keys selection!
Discard the "Shift" key thing, and you'll have the Visual Mode. :P

then one would be sing vi as a more-or-less standard Windows editor
Nothing wrong with that.

And for that, TextPad et al are better, because they are "more standard", if you will.
A "standard" is the standard you define. Some say Office 2007 is a standard, too.  :D

Phew ... I wonder if there is one thing that EmEditor or UltraEdit can but Vim can't ...  :-*

Srsly, I can't understand people paying for text editors. If they really need a bloated programming IDE instead of a text editor, they should learn about Eclipse...

My only real beef with the program is its pricing structure, though.
A lifetime license wouldn't solve the problems either, would it?

he finally hit a wall where he was running into problems that were beyond his programming abilities.
Now this is one of the reasons I haven't developed my own file manager yet...  ;D

Your work habits just may not be well-suited at all to the new way of doing things
I would rather say, the "new way of doing things" does not fit anyone's actual work habits, eh?

I'll be very interested to see what third-party solutions come out to address the needs of people like you.
At least some people know how to make money with Microsoft's mistakes.

Now I found the time to give AccelMan a test run. Seems to have the potential to steal the first place as the most bloated, unintuitive file manager, right before Directory Opus (which will never be my favorite one, it is powerful but....).

And I haven't even managed to make it run continuously. Started it - no AccelMan appears. Killed its process, started it again - works. Exited, started it - no AccelMan appears.

Looking forward to any further development, though...

If you have actually used it and still don't like it then that's your right.
I'm glad to tell you that I will make use of this right then...

...And with a 10 year warning it's about damn time it went the way of 16bit software
Why? "Never change a running system". After all, there wasn't a need for that, unlike 16 bit software (as 32 bit CPUs came up).

UI improvements and all.
Why do you think this is an improvement?

Ya know the "Classic" start menu really only had about a five year run 95-2k ... The Start Panel introduced (to the public e.g. the rest of us had it earlier...) in 2001 when XP was RTM is looking at about a 10 year run at this point. So... Why is it still being treated as some new evil thing?!?
This is the first time that "the public" is forced to use it...

Or do you mean it just uses more resources in general? But I always heard that "unused ram is wasted ram", don't you agree?
Unused RAM is cache for me. More resource usage = less performance with the same resources, right?

what I read about microsoft having made studies on how it was an improvement in usability for the general public.
Do you really trust Microsoft's studies? Of course they will never result in "this sucks".

It takes as much space as Vista? It takes as much time to boot as Vista?
According to the recommendations, it takes at least twice as much of resources. :P

About the taskbar, you found studies showing that people are less productive when using win7?
I performed studies myself. The one I performed them with was I. You see, if you are keen with a certain way to handle your OS (having been using Windows since 1996), it is a huge loss of productivity if you'll have to change your behavior entirely.

No more actual "task" bar, no more classic start menu; two big disadvantages for me. Of course, computer newbies (starting with Vista or sth) won't have these problems.

I - personally - would never use anything which resides on Google's servers. Maybe when it is completely open source...

Windows 7 is, basically, Vista with a unusable task bar. So I can't see a sense in "upgrading".

i think 40hz's old startrek picture does point the way to the future -- customized input pads tailored to the application you are working on.

Another PDF viewer, apart from the "big players" listed here, is apvlv.
Its "special feature" are keybindings like Vim has.

For example, < Ctrl-f > to forward page, < Ctrl-b > to previous page, 'k','j','h','l' to scrolling a page up, down, left or right, and so on.

Free, open source and multi-platform. GTK though, so not really optimized for a fast startup.

Well, thank you very much for the mini review... AWM replaced  FileBX now. (Finally.)

Depends on how you use it.  ;D
If you use it with eclimd, not necessarily, as it seamlessly starts a "hidden" eclipse without all that GUI crap...
OK, my description was too blurred.

Might be a bit late, but:
Yep. And I love it. Never ever have to start that sluggish eclipse crap again since its functionality is integrated into my beloved Vim now.  :-*

However TC's folder tree implementation is still a bit, ehm ... weird. Using the second (respectively first) panel as a folder tree doesn't fit my definition of a separate folder tree..

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by Tuxman on October 02, 2009, 03:25 PM »
I would actually vote Directory Opus, but no lifetime license with this price is a no-go for me.

So currently I basically use two file managers:
1) CubicExplorer, still in first steps of development but already fast and stable with a bunch of useful extra features. And it is free.
2) xplorer², the fastest FM on the "market". Using your regedit skills, you can also assign My Computer to it, although the developer doesn't really support this ...

Alternative:  Nomad.NET is very feature-rich (and free), too, but the major con is that it is developed in C#, so it's sluggish and hogs resources. A pity, really...

As I recently stumbled upon this thread:
The major reason for me not to use TC is the lack of a single-pane mode. I tend to do a bunch of file operations within the same directory. The second pane is a waste of space for me.
