Living Room / Re: Windows XP system clock losing (lots) of time.
« Last post by Ath on December 19, 2011, 07:13 AM »
It's real hardware, and not a VMWare image running on a virtual host? 'Cause VMWare 'clients' can lose time if the VMWare tools stuff isn't installed or updated when the host is updated to a newer version. If it's not installed, you'd probably lose several hours per day in time though ;)

Battery is most likely cause if it's hardware, like 4wd said.

Living Room / Re: SATA III - performance
« Last post by Ath on December 19, 2011, 07:08 AM »
Mechanical disks aren't yet up to par to fill the bandwidth of a SATA II interface, so neither that of a SATA III interface, only SSD's can come close to that kind of data volume, and then only the fastest. The WD Black model has 7200 rpm specced, but the Green model I couldn't find definitive rpm specs for, so most likely it's either variable between 4200 and 5600, or down to a constant 5400 rpm, resulting in a lower overall data transfer speed.

Did you update the firmware of the router to the latest available from Cisco/LinkSys? The management pages in the router should provide access to updates.

See if this fixes it, Ath.
Yes, it does

I googled a bit on mimo and multiple video cards, and finally found the issues you've been talking about. Should have done that earlier :-[

Your issues will eventually be solved once DisplayLink fixes their drivers to work with multiple (ATI) video adapters mounted in a system, and not earlier then that. They should be pun(i)shed for not providing properly working Windows 7 drivers for over 2 years now, as they where aware of the issues even before Windows 7 was released. >:(

Any progress on the low temperature issue yet? Local temperatures are probably going below 0 this week, so negative values in the display would be nice :D

In fact, if anyone wishes to pay for the postage, they can have the MIMO. Let me know.

If nobody else responds I'll take it, just to know if it works here like mine has since day 1: Flawless. (Besides the driver-quircks of flashing during initialization, ofcourse)

Did you try a different USB cable?, as the one supplied could be broken or have a dodgy connection. :(

General Software Discussion / Re: Favorite ZIP/RAR application?
« Last post by Ath on December 18, 2011, 05:43 AM »
Another good reason to use any of the free archivers available, PeaZip, 7-Zip, IZArc, they don't require to do these backward hoop-jumps just to be able to use 'm.

And besides that, the .rar fileformat doesn't have any (big) benefits over the other compressed fileformats that makes it worth to pay for.
Nor the illusion of 'support' from any of these suppliers.

General Software Discussion / Re: Typing break for Windows: alternative to Workrave
« Last post by Ath on December 17, 2011, 05:04 AM »
Yes, it's open source, but it's C++, so I won't be able to just modify it :( Are there good alternatives?
Just keep nagging the developers with good motivations to make changes, and they probably incorporate them after being convinced.

What's stopping you from learning how to program in C++, by the way? :D

Developer's Corner / Re: An iOS Developer Takes on Android
« Last post by Ath on December 17, 2011, 05:00 AM »
In the end the article turns out being a big praise for the Android platform and Eclipse, and that if Andoid would have been around a bit earlier, he may have never written an iPhone version of Meridian, though he eventually would have, and moaned in the same way about the Apple 'experience', as all his complaints are those of anyone that hasn't ever before used Java, Eclipse and an Android Phone.

@Paul Keith: Yes, he's directly involved in developing Meridian, he even states in the first paragraph:
Recently, we released the Android version of Meridian, our platform for building location-based apps.
and naming Meridian a 'platform' is just marketing babble.

If you aren't sure about drivers download the windows upgrade adviser tool and run it to assess likely problems - it will give you a report for both 32 bit and 64 bit upgrade issues:

http://www.microsoft...n/details.aspx?id=20

That, but also check manufacturers websites for updated drivers for your equipment. And a good Google search doesn't hurt either, some hardware needs specific tricks / workarounds to get going, and somebody somewhere already found it out for you :tellme:

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Request
« Last post by Ath on December 14, 2011, 09:40 AM »
Wraith, the link on your Blog is dodgy, it points to the zipfile with all lowercase letters, as hollowlife pointed out. Clicking the link gives me a 404 error-page.
If I right-click and select download, I (slowly) get a file of about 20 kB, but I can't open it. When copying the link text and changing the name into the correct case (using a new tab in my browser), it downloads fine and can be opened as expected.

The direct link in your #8 reply here works fine now, as does the attached download.

Finished Programs / Re: SOLVED: DimScreen + DimSaver = MonitorTintFixer?
« Last post by Ath on December 14, 2011, 08:18 AM »
Unfortunately the original title, containing the word MonitorBleedingFixer (or something close to that), seems to have been changed before the move took place, and now the title is quite out of context :(

Hmm, I tried hollowlife's renaming,
in the URL

These last 3 words are crucial in the description of getting it to work...

I can see 2 minor issues:
  • Select All doesn't list it's shortcut key (Ctrl-A)
  • Closing without saving the data doesn't give a warning/option to save

Before I'd go through that much trouble on a cloudy/crap-colored display, I'd get another, better, display. You're probably watching it a couple of hours a day, why accept mediocre?
