ProcessTamer / Re: ProcessTamer Tray Icon does not display in Vista
« Last post by mouser on January 23, 2008, 12:38 PM »
ok, i don't think you are the only person suffering from this -- i've never had it happen to me with process tamer, but i have had it happen with another program of mine to me.. something causes it occasionally with programs that start with windows.  i'll try to investigate and fix.

does this problem only manifest itself when it starts at boot time when windows starts?

Coding Snacks / Re: What language is the best for a new programmer to start with?
« Last post by mouser on January 23, 2008, 07:24 AM »

I still stick with my first piece of advice, which is to try to find a book that motivates you.  But perhaps the other thing to say is that maybe the important thing is not to choose the best language for you right away -- instead, it may be most important for you that you try a few languages.

Not only will this let you figure out which one suits you best, it will serve the very important purpose of helping you to see which concepts are common across languages, and which features are specific to different languages.

Thanks for the summary of your experience 4wd -- since your opinions seem close to mine i think i'll give PcTools firewall a try soon.
Recently i moved from Comodo to Eset's new firewall, and been pretty happy, but not totally satisfied, so i'm always looking for another.

UrlSnooper / Re: WinPCap -- NetBee .. will the next URLsnooper incorporate NetBee?
« Last post by mouser on January 23, 2008, 05:08 AM »
Fascinating.. that's the first i've heard of NetBee.
To answer your question, I can't see any reason why UrlSnooper wouldnt add NetBee support when the time comes (i.e. when NetBee becomes more compatible with hardware than WinPcap).

Living Room / Computer/PC Users Groups - Membership at DonationCoder? Other Ideas?
« Last post by mouser on January 23, 2008, 01:34 AM »
I think we should show some solidarity with PC / Computer User Groups -- those small groups of personal computer users that gather in a local community.

I had two ideas off the top of my head but i'd like to hear more:

One idea was to allow such user groups to be treated like a single entity, in the sense that they could donate any amount they wanted and get membership and license key for all of their members.  [ie let the users group make a single donation and get membership and license keys for everyone in it].

The other idea was that it's hard to think of a more honest group of people than those in a local users group -- and they often write howto or review or tutorial essays for their groups.. could we welcome such groups to participate by sharing their writings here and being a part of DC, and in return welcome them here with full membership / licensekey stuff for their organization?

What do you think?

Developer's Corner / phpform.org - free online html form builder
« Last post by mouser on January 23, 2008, 12:34 AM »
DC member veign says this may be the best online form generator he's seen.  It really does look extremely nice, with drag and drop support for re-arranging your forms and a visual editor for building them.

Seems like a great way to create an initial form for a page.  After you construct it visually the site lets you download the html code to put on your website.  Very well done.

I'm also interested in hearing what people use.  Hopefully we'll see some good pointers here, and please keep us updated in the thread with your findings if you try stuff and tell us what you come up with.

General Software Discussion / Re: Inventory Software
« Last post by mouser on January 22, 2008, 06:19 PM »
tanatos, we don't object to people on the forum arranging to work on paid programming projects outside of forum discussions, but this forum is almost exclusively about people coding stuff for free (though accepting donations after the fact if people want to support their work).

So while your intentions may be good, we discourage people from answering posts like this by offering to be hired for pay to do it.  If and when someone decides they want to hire a programmer for a job, that's a different matter and I encourage you to reply to such people directly.  Until then it would probably be better not to offer to work for hire when people post a request.  Might seem strange compared to other programming sites, but that's just the way we do it here.

Back to the subject, I know their are existing inventory programs, both local and web-based, i just don't know the names of them.  but surely some people here have some experience with them and it would be nice to hear from people who use such programs..

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: A new name
« Last post by mouser on January 22, 2008, 05:51 PM »
I have decided on a new name:

"Clipberd Helpe an spel"

 ;D

I'm afraid we are stuck with the original name at this point since it's been so long, but i've learned my lesson and won't be naming programs anymore without getting advice first.

This is why I don't like using languages that don't require declaring variables ahead of time explicitly.  Saves untold mystery errors.
24316
that's strange.. it looks like you must have done something slightly wrong when adding the code manually.
if you want to send me your modified files and originals i can try to pinpoint what went wrong ([email protected]).

Living Room / Follow-up Articles Explaining the Debacle of Corrupt Game Reviews
« Last post by mouser on January 22, 2008, 09:39 AM »
A few months ago we posted about a gamespot review writer who was rumoured to have quit after being pressured to retract a negative review.

Looks like the true story confirms those initial reports and a few articles now expose the ugly truth behind the whole corrupt enterprise..

Here's a little snippet:
As a marketer, if you recognized you needed more traffic to your product, you could buy it. You could even buy a top placement for your title on the GameSpot homepage, pretty much assuring clicks to coverage on your title, regardless of whether there was organic interest or not. And we're not talking about just banner advertisements here -- we're talking about buying one of the top stories on the front of the site.

« Last post by mouser on January 22, 2008, 09:34 AM »
And here's the money quote that explains why there was so much pressure put on the website to kill their negative review:

Eidos paid a substantial amount of money to have its ads point to the GameSpot review of Kane & Lynch. The Kane & Lynch review wasn't very favorable. Eidos freaked. GameSpot caved.

Thanks for the follow up Lashiec -- the long article is a MUST READ for people who always suspected that advertisers can buy their way into being featured on magazines and websites.

« Last post by mouser on January 22, 2008, 05:17 AM »
I've already expressed privately how dissapointed I was in your actions deleting all the posts, and how distruptive (and disrespectful) I thought it was.

But everyone makes mistakes and everyone deserves a second chance, and i appreciate the sentiment of your post.  Allow me to be the first to say welcome back.  And please don't do it again!

Hopefully we can get the posts restored and get things back the way they were.

And I hope the rest of the forum can demonstrate that we are graciously willing to give people a second chance when they ask for it.

By dangerous i mean that i'm assuming if someone mistakenly overwrites their existing database, they will lose their entire collection of notes.  That is dangerous.

As for people who downloaded it for the first time.. a nice solution would be never include a starting database and have your program create it on first run if it doesnt exist.

Or, as i said, use an installer (Inno Setup is free and nice), which knows to only install the blank database file if it doesnt already exist.

If you allready have db.mdb with records in it, leave it... Do not overwrite it with the new one....

this sounds like a real recipe for disaster..
maybe you shouldn't include it in the zip, or else use an installer which will not overwrite it if it exists.
