Thanks Darwin, the changes they mentioned, "we made it better!" didn't really make me want to rush into it.

Cheers

Thanks!

Looks like Actual Windows Manager... at a guess!

General Software Discussion / Re: Battery Icon Stuck ???
« Last post by Darwin on August 30, 2008, 11:48 AM »
No problem! I've been plaqued by battery issues with every laptop I've had (six or seven at this point). One controversial tip is to charge it and then discharge it to about 50% and then remove it for storage if you are going to run off AC...

Glad you got the battery working for now and hope that you have some luck with the freezer trick.

Try this: put the battery in a plastic bag (ziploc would be preferable) and toss it in the freezer for about 24 hours and then try charging it again. It's worked for me in the past (nod to Ralf Maximus for the original tip!).

FWIW, this is likely a battery charge "memory" issue.

From a quick read of the Foxit PDF Editor user's manual (albeit for version 1.5, though there is no mention of this feature having been added for version 2), I don't think it has any OCR capabilities, though it does appear to be a powerful and impressive application.

TopOCR looks interesting - and  the price is right (free)! Using it in conjunction with Foxit PDF Editor might be an easy and effective workaround. Nice find

Also BTW, I have Nuance PDF Professional 5 (and 3 and 4...) so actually have this functionality alreadly. However, as described in this thread, I had to uninstall it from my XP machine. As my XP machine is still my main computer, I'm vaguely interested in finding an alternative solution for this computer. However, over the next few months I'll be switching to the Vista notebook, so in the long run this won't be a big deal...
2434
Heh, heh - I've been looking at the pdf995 toolset. However, the pdf portion is a print driver, it doesn't offer any advanced post-pdf creation editing, sadly. I'd forgotten about Foxit PDF Editor, I'll take a look.

FWIW I LOVED Foxit Reader and used it until Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 came out. AAR 8 (and now 9) is *almost* as light on resources (when configured properly) as Foxit Reader but has a number of features that I need. At any rate, it's been a year or so and it's time to look at Foxit again...

The newest version of PDFcamp(pdf writer) supports text extraction from printable documents (excluding graphics and PDF files) while keeping the original page layout.

Drat! So close...

Hi George - I bought the new version... I'd save your money...  :o
2437
Thanks lanux - I'd forgotten about that site. Will take a look...
2438
Hmm... checking out the feature matrix, it doesn't look like NovaPDF will allow you to process existing pdfs. It *looks* like a very powerful print driver, no? Actually, I wonder if NovaPDF will do this (process/change existing pdfs) printing an existing pdf from a pdf reader...? Enquiring minds want to know!
2439
BTW, Curt, I notice that NovaPDF (all flavours) is on sale at the moment. Will it handle this as well (ie allow you to save a pdf created as an archive of image files as a searchable pdf)?

Thanks, lanux  I'm checking it out now...

Yeah, my fault. In hindsight I should have started a new thread. Thanks for making this information more generally accessible, zhouzh2

Note that Scooter software has made a 40% discount on BC3 (it applies to upgrade pricing as well) available to supporting DC members through August 30th... Check it out via the Specials link at the top of this page.

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package
« Last post by Darwin on August 29, 2008, 07:43 AM »
Hi Josh,

So far, so good with VIPRE. It's much faster now - even on the Win2k machine it scans in Quick mode in under 8 minutes and does Deep scans in under an hour. On my wife's XP Pro Centrino notebook (2GB RAM) it's blazing fast and is done before your even aware that it was doing anythin in quick mode (haven't observed it doing a deep scan on that machine). I *guess* it's been learning about the system? At any rate, I'm giving it the full 15 days before I commit to buying it, but at this stage I don't see any downsides to it. My only concern is that the hardware is a bit flaky, so I want to make sure that it's going to be around for a bit before I spend anymore money on it! NB that if you trial it, initially updates seem to take forever (10s of minutes) but that this, too, is much quicker now.

Webroot is great on both my now aging Centrino notebook (XP Pro, 2GB RAM) and my new mid-range Dual Core notebook (Vista Home Premium, 3GB RAM). Quick scans take under 15 minutes (usually about 11) and deep scans anything from 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. Both machines are quite usable during a quick scan while deep scans produce a more noticeable "hit" (though the new machine is still quite peppy).

Four GB of DDR2 RAM is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cheap for a notebook at the moment, I'm seriously tempted to buy 2 2GB sticks for my Vista notebook, just to get the extra little kick that it would (more like "might") provide... but beyond saying that I've got 4GB vs the 3GB already installed, I'm not sure what benefit I'd see? ExtremeTech did a bit on RAM recently, which made for interesting reading: http://www.extremete...,2845,2328804,00.asp

It's got me Jonesing for more RAM... and in a position to afford it, too!

Newsletter for August 28th, 2008
Codename "Dizzying Discounts"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read our BLOG"
(new rss feed with images)

1. Newsletter Editorial

Darwin here, warming the captain's chair for mouser.  August has been a busy month on every level - personal, local, national, and international (heck, it was even a busy month cosmologically - the Perseids were active from July 17 to August 24).  But thankfully this newsletter is coming out on time finally so we only have to look back at the last two weeks.  As August grinds to a close, let's all take a look back at what's new on the Donationcoder boards since the last newsletter.

2. Official Announcements

As August ends, so does the huge 40% discount on the newly released Beyond Compare version 3!  This program is a favorite of many forum members including mouser -- who even wrote a giant review of version 2 and its competition way back in 2005.  Also ending is the discount on JungleDisk, a very cool program reviewed by DC Member Justice in June 2008.

The discounts only run for another 2 days so if you haven't taken advantage of the discounts you have to act fast.  As always, we make no commissions from the sales but you do have to be a supporting or honorary member of the site (remember that you can become a supporting member with a donation of any amount).

Copies of both applications were also featured in this month's giveaway. See the link below to read about the winners and thanks to DC Member Carl Thorpe for arranging the discounts and giveaway.

3. Your Participation Requested:

We'd like to welcome everyone who's joined over the past couple of weeks. If you're new here and haven't yet joined in any of the conversations, don't be shy! Below are a couple of conversations that we'd love to have your participation in.

4. Help and Advice Wanted:

If you're trying to make a decision about anything software or hardware related, the DC forum is a great place to turn. A quick search of the forum might provide you with an answer - if it doesn't post, your question - there's always someone who will drop by to give you a hand!

5. Fun And Games

There's more to DC than coding and the serious discussion of hardware and software. Check out the links below for some lighter fare - everything from games to funny video clips.

6. The Weird Wide Web

Donationcoders are a generous lot, always ready to share their latest discoveries from the far flung corners of the web. Here are some highlights (in case you missed them!):

7. General Software Discussion

Of course, software is a big part of DC and discussions about various applications and classes of software dominate the boards. Here are some recent postings of interest:

8. Mini-Reviews by Members

We LOVE to see reviews on DC. Take some inspiration from these reviews posted since the last newsletter. First up is Tom, who treats us to a mini-review of a vertical mouse - a beastie I had no idea existed until I read the review! New member Shook jumps right in with a mini-review of AudioSurf, a game that adjusts its speed and the play to whatever music you play through it. Thus it will appeal to everyone from "headbangers to Mozart fans", to quote Shook!

9. Coding Snacks and DC Software

This section of the newsletter highlights posts pulled from a number of boards that focus on software created by DC members. If you're new to DC, these boards are a great place to go if you're looking for something to enhance your workflow and you just can't find it. Post a clear and polite request and a DC member might just code it for you. Check out garbanzo's request for a customizable unicode character paster for an example.

10. Developer's Corner

The developer's Corner is more than you might think! Drop by and you'll find everything from in-depth discussions of programming languages to threads dealing with entrepreneurial issues. Despite what you might think, there probably IS something here for you.

2449
Great idea!

EDIT: I was so excited, I posted before I finished typing my post  :-[

BTW, talking about the 4 GB purchase, are you using or planning to use a 64-bit OS?

I was wondering the same thing...
