This might be a fun thing to do weekly --
like every monday start a thread where people are invited to post their plans and goals for the week.

This is rightfully something that would belong in our Getting Organized Experiment section.

Living Room / Re: Sleep is killing my mouse

you are mistaken.

hibernate is complete power off and memory state is saved and restored from disk.

s1 and s3 are both low-power sleep modes which keep the ram active.

what you want to try is the sleep mode that keeps power to the USB devices.

i mispoke before -- you are using currently S3 mode it sounds like.  and you want to try to force it to use S1.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Definr.com plugin
« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2008, 10:53 AM »
it's only me.
FARR is not open source unfortunately :(  most of my big programs aren't.  it's something i'd like to do more of once i can convince myself it wouldn't make donations go from very little to even less :)

the main reason the todo list is getting so long is because i've been working on a paid job for the last couple of months and will be on it for another 2 months full time.  so i only have a little bit of time here and there.

BUT after i get a little break in april or so, i'm really looking forward to getting back and doing a lot of work on FARR and a few others, as well as a couple more programs i am interested in writing.  so until DC becomes a full time job, i have to take breaks now and then to pay the bills.

it does have the advantage though of having the ideas have time to marinate a little and see the patterns in the requests.

so please everyone who is waiting for new features and fixes keep in mind that FARR development has not slowed, i just have to work on it in bursts with some delays for now.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Farr Alias: Window Management
« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2008, 10:45 AM »
btw this is a good example of where one might create a custom hotkey in the hotkey tab, and set it to autotype the word "windowsmanagement", that way you just hit the hotkey and farr will pop up with the windowsmanagement menu ready for you to trigger.

« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2008, 09:08 AM »
btw this alias group is working for me, so at least that's one more datapoint.
ottenm make sure you try it on a few different program windows just to make sure it isn't one stubborn program refusing to minimize, etc.

Any tips?  I extracted the zip into the "Scripts" directory,

did you really put it in the Scripts directory?

jgp didn't say so, but should have said that this NEEDS to be in a subdirectory of one of the AliasGroups directories, preferably: FindAndRunRobot/AliasGroups/Installed/WinManagement

the only thing giving me pause to say this is the problem is that you say it found the alias for you, which suggests that it found everything it needs..

Find And Run Robot / Re: how to un-minimize FireFox for URL's?
« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2008, 08:57 AM »
another possible reason that it might work for me and not for others is that i have FF set to open a new tab for new urls, and maybe you don't? and maybe FF only will un-minimize if their is a new tab or page being opened?

here is something to try: set FF as a custom browser in FARR and see if that makes a difference.  i don't have it set in mine but it will cause urls to launch via a different method, which might trigger FARR to wake up.  just put the path to FF and dont worry about the $$1 i think.

can anyone else say whether their firefox automatically unminimizes when a url is launched by another program?

ottenm, maybe you could try this and see if it unminimizes your FF when triggering:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=6714.0

again same question to others: does FF unminimize for you when you launch a url from another program?  (maybe there is an option for this in FF?)

you could put the please wait in the status bar.

ps. i've added to my todo list to try to be smarter about resizing the window to avoid the flicker.

this looks like an affiliate link, which we try to avoid here.
if you want to pass on info about a discount, great.
if you want people to click on a link to make money from affiliate signups, you need to say so very clearly.

ProcessTamer / Re: Set foreground to "above normal" rather than "high"
« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2008, 12:00 AM »
It's actually quite a good idea to change the foreground boost option to "above normal", as making it high might be pushing things too far -- adding to my todo list.

and thanks for alerting me not to miss this post f0dder.

Find And Run Robot / Re: how to un-minimize FireFox for URL's?
« Last post by mouser on February 21, 2008, 06:41 PM »
this should really happen automatically whenever a url is launched -- it does here.

as long as the thing being launched is a url, your browser should pop up from minimization when the url is opened.  as i said it does here.  it's not FARR doing that, it's the browser doing it.  i use firefox too by the way.

ps i do use a firefox extension that minimizes FF to the tray but i really don't think that is it.

Find And Run Robot / Re: change "start in directory" plus command-line arg?
« Last post by mouser on February 21, 2008, 06:26 PM »
currently you cant explicitly tell farr which directory to set as working directory from an alias, but i could add that.  having said that, i THOUGHT that farr already tries to set the directory to the app directory when it launches it, but i could be wrong.

did you set the regular expression field for your alias? if not then it wont expect you to type anything after phone, and when you do it will invalidate it.

so you should have for your regular expression something like: ^phone (.*)

(note that you cant pass an argument to a .lnk shortcut so youll have to put an exe in your alias results).
