The original usual specification is about numbers only, and the version resources of files can only contain numbers. There are textual representations of those resources, but these are used for display only, not comparison/registration.
Guess mouser intended/s to check actual file version resources too

I really like ever incrementing build-numbers (5.0.1.1165, 5.10.1.1172, etc.)

Living Room / Re: Planning a major programming project - tips requested
« Last post by Ath on January 13, 2012, 01:55 AM »
I was advised AGAINST XML because of the sheer complexity of implementation. There is no desire to export this data, as my application will be the first in its industry.

Have you settled on a programming language/environment already? That heavily influences a lot of choices.
If working with Visual Studio, XML is a very natural choice for storing application settings, as xml is much easier to use then either .properties or .ini files there, but if working with a LAMP or WAMP environment or Java (both pojo or an app container), .properties or .config would be easier. Working with some Borland (yeah I still hang onto the original name) stuff like C++(Builder) or Delphi, .ini files are a quite logical choice.
(Please share your choice/thoughts)

Storing data, especially if it's most 'other type of files', is imho best saved (copied) as the original filetypes, with a light database or xml used as a glue pointing to the files stored in a directory structure, off of a single 'mount point'.
If the data where most user-entered, with an occasional file attached, I'd go for a proper SQL database, like MS-SQL Express edition (2008R2 Express allows for 10 GB storage per database), PostgreSQL or MySQL (the disky is the limit :)).

What steps do YOU, as coders, take when you are planning a project?
I usually start with a few PoC's to prove any technical challenges will actually work as intended, then top-down, dividing the project into smaller chunks (until split down to single lines of sourcecode :P)

The original OP reports that he is using Intel crap that comes with a Dell Precision T3400.  He is using an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 290.
The crap part was intended and directed at the built-in video of the Intel processors and/or chipsets, not the rest of the processor :tellme:
Do you have the latest WHQL supported nVidia drivers for your NVS 290 installed? I've seen a lot of vague display-related issues caused by either old or non-WHQL drivers. Windows can act up in strange ways, because of that :-\

hm, I've (just a few minutes ago) captured regions with cursor on FireFox 9 without hassle (select a region, then repeat last size & pos moving the cursor inside the region the second time), but then I'm on Win7 (x64), so that might be the 'solution'?

Maybe the OP needs to get his video drivers an update? And what video hardware is used (Intel built-in crap?)

Just curious as to whether I should be "seeing" something (some type of visual feedback), because I don't...  :-[

it doesn't have any output, (unless there's an error)

Sounds like all is good ;D

Please contact me if you have not received your NANY mug gift certificate by email at this point.
(or if you ware having trouble using the one you received).
Received mine and ordered my gift. It worked like a charm  It'll take a couple of weeks to get it sent to Europe though

And thank you again to the donator who paid for most of the mugs.
Yes, a big Thank You for that!

« Last post by Ath on January 10, 2012, 05:09 PM »
I hope the original poster can get some use of that framework; I tried to make it logical and easy to follow.
It's looking good, but requires a bit of manual labor by the OP, and that could be a non-coder (first post, but a Participant since 2008, who knows).

That's why I suggested my WinButtons and WinSendKeys tools. Running that with a user-created configuration (using WinButtonEdit) from a desktop shortcut with a system-wide hotkey, is more hassle to set up initially, but could be more non-coder friendly when changes should be made to the set of keys and supported applications.

I do see a 'feature-request' for WB to pop-up at the current mouse-cursor location, though :-\

Hm, not exactly right, but could be a start:
WinButtons can present buttons on screen, Application-context sensitive if you want, and can use WinSendKeys to send keystrokes, mouseclicks and clipboard (text) contents to a specific or the currently active application.
Now just a (system-wide?) hotkey to load WinButtons, and you'd be fine :D

I could add that as a feature, I guess, if WinButtons is anything near what you'd like?

I should properly thank mouser for the nice screencast he did of Printer PaperSource Explorer. I'm currently not able to create one myself, but I'll get a microphone somewhere :-[, and do (at least) next year's NANY myself :D.

Should probably be promoted for next year's NANY edition: Optionally create a short screencast of your entry. (Or deliver a script/playbook for making a useful one?)

That's probably something with your Windows setup, I suspect. :-\

I've set it to always show all icons (so I can't verify, but it does get a bit crowded at times, even though I've set the taskbar to double-height).

Is there anywhere where the sourcecode can be obtained?
I'd be tempted to try to update/improve it in some way, but not rewrite it from scratch.

@hangdawg, the icon is automagically hidden on Windows Vista and 7 depending on it's use (click) and 'icon' changes, unless you change that setting yourself. As it's a user-driven feature, that's not normally controlled by an application.

New ArsClip for the New Year
Sounds familiar, NANY :D

This does involve changing a BIOS setting I guess? So a full reboot of the system would probably be required then.

If not, DevCon from our MS friends, could come to the rescue.

edit: Here's a quite clear manual for use: http://www.robvanderwoude.com/devcon.php

Doesn't ViDock have tooling for that? Would sound logical, or I would have bought a proper desktop to hold all those graphics cards 8) (Did a quick look there, but found nothing so far)

I still like Finalist best.

Doesn't finalist by definition imply a yet to be selected winner? It sounds unfinished.
like a contest, that's supposed to have a Winner. But we all won! :-* (even those that didn't participate ;))
