General Software Discussion / Re: updating Firefox plugins sucks!

I have to retract my approval for CleanMem,
with windows 7 it actually slows response time for starting apps.
Even FireFox when it's minimized.
Well, duh - those programs have never brought along any optimization - at best, they do the same thing as Windows' internal memory cleanup routines does, at worst they pessimize your system.

Congratulations - always fun to have your software mentioned in magazines :)

That it's relatively short is actually a good thing - it would have felt too repetitive if it was longer. It's a great little gem :)

Caching allows you to prioritize or delay print jobs. You can set your print job to run at a lower priority or after regular office hours if you want to. That way, the office football pool sheets don't get delayed because some dork in accounting is frantically rushing to get 5000 pages worth of subpoenaed financial data over to the SEC by close of business!

General Software Discussion / Re: Need help regarding DOS and BAT files.
« Last post by f0dder on May 13, 2010, 05:07 AM »
With 2005, you had to do some extra work to be able to complile non-dotnet apps, but once you did, you were set.
IIRC, it was just the PlatformSDK that wasn't included with 2005 express, so yeah - just download that, and you were set.

There's a few things about Express that could be show-stoppers for some:
1) they don't include MFC.
2) they don't include the resource editor.
3) some of the advanced functionality from the pro versions are missing, but it's stuff most won't miss.

I don't see #1 as a problem, unless you have to deal with legacy codebases using MFC. #2 is a bit more of a "real" problem, but there's 3rd party resource editors around. And if you need the stuff from #3, you're probably doing professional development and then it's sorta fair you pay for the suite :)

General Software Discussion / Re: What is your preferred font?
« Last post by f0dder on May 12, 2010, 05:52 PM »
Eóin: how on earth can you live with a variable width font for coding? BLASPHEMER! Hell, for coding, anything else than Dina is blasphemy in my eyes.
Funny you should say that. I always thought so, but now I wonder if that's just a habit learned from the days of 80 column screens. And recently, messing around with an Autoit3 script in SCite, I was struck by how much easier the proportional fonts are to read than the monospaced ones are at similar sizes (trying both Consolas and Dina).
I personally find monospaced fonts a lot easier to read when dealing with code - can't put my finger on what exactly makes it that way, but it's not exclusively being able to line things up.

To be honest though, I'd take curly brackets over the alternatives any day
Indeed - it's amazing that people designing languages these days make such fscked up decisions as using indentation (and specific indentation requirements) to control scope O_o

The C compiler I use is not free (I use MS Visual c++ 6.0). You can get a free version from MS (the "express" version) but from my limited trial with that version I found it to be pretty bloated and crippled.
-widgewunner (May 11, 2010, 08:29 PM)
Crippled in what way? Funny that you say you use VC6 and call the express editions crippled, considering the amount of bugs and level of C++ compliance in VC6 :p

Probably a good idea to make sure you have a backup of the backup drive... it's never a good sign when hardware starts acting flaky.

If Windows tells you it needs a new driver, something is pretty wrong. I'd suspect wonky USB ports or electronics in the drive enclosure before blaming corrupted filesystem on the drive. Try some different USB cables and ports, and if that fails, try getting the disk out of the enclosure and testing it connected directly inside your machine.

Then use something like spinrite
Don't.

You may be right f0dder. I'm not sure how to confirm that. Would you like 10$ better than 9$ too ?
Hmm, good question actually - $9 isn't offensive to me, while $9.90 definitely is. Something that might be fun to try is pricing the app at $10, along with a very small footnote reading something along the lines of "we didn't want to offend you with a pricetag of $9.99" :P

General Software Discussion / Re: Clipboard Managing-Which one?
« Last post by f0dder on May 06, 2010, 06:35 AM »
I'm personally pretty satisfied with ClipX - simple, unobtrusive, to-the-point, freeware, and suits my needs. Only problem I've had with it is that sometimes OpenOffice locks up if ClipX is enabled and you copy/paste stuff in the spreadsheet app.
2388
Why $9.90? Does it really help to get people to make the purchase? Personally I'd be more inclined to pay $10 than $9.90, as I get royally ticked off by that kind of price marketing.

Such an approach would probably work, but the process of updating the links could be slow - if having a monitoring program (on the system hosting the "master folder") running at all times is acceptable, the overhead could be reduced. Keep in mind that hardlinks onlycan't reach out to remote machines, or even files on another partition. Vista introduced symlinks which don't have this restriction.

Not that I really know exactly what I am looking at (not being a programmer and all - at least not yet smiley), but from what I see on the comparisons of this site:

I would say Mercurial may be the way to go....
What in particular makes you say so?

i'll take a look into it

Let's know how it works out - NTFS junctions have a number of quirks and limitations, so might not be perfect... unfortunately I misread your post, they won't solve your point #1 - each junction will appear as a subfolder under the main folder.

I'm not sure trying to have 75k files in a single folder (even if it's virtual, with the real files in multiple subfolders scattered around) is a good idea - some applications might not deal with that amount of files very well :)

unfortunately I need multiple Domains and a few thousand computers.
If you're at that scale, I suppose you could afford setting up a linux machine to handle the task? dnsmasq would probably handle the job pretty well.

Probably easiest to simply edit your machine's hosts file, unless you have a lot of machine on your LAN you want to do this for.

Dear Mister Crush-
In addition to decrypting a message encrypted by your software. Does your software decrypt messages encrypted by other means (algorithms)? Could I feed it a page of encrypted text, wait for a while, and then see decrypted text?
Not possible when (proper) encryption is applied - unless you have patience to wait more than the lifetime of the universe :)

i will have new transparency capture method soon, but why do you say "still no good"? looks pretty good to my eyes.
Transparency does seem to work in his latest shot, but compare the images from his previous post - seems to be a thing wrt. theming now (you're probably capturing non-Aero, or sth)
