FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Timer

Yes that makes a lot of sense to me.  Don't forget: "And in the log put a note next to each alarm about whether it was [CANCELED]."

Boy, you really don't want to do a Delete, do you?

 ;D

Actually i think i understand now a bit more about why he doesnt want to make a delete, because Archive serves no purpose other than to record a log of items.

So when you "archive" something you are really just deleting it (and putting it into the log (archive)).

I think the term archive made me think we could bring back timers from the archive, like if we created a 10 minute egg alarm, and then archived it, we could recreate it from the archive easily.  In other words i thought the archive was more like a template.

If you keep functionality the way it is now, maybe i would suggest changing "archive" to "log".
And in the log put a note next to each alarm about whether it was [CANCELED].

And then i still say change from A) Archive to C) cancel.
(in other words you dont need to create a new delete function, you just have to rename the Archive function to Delete or Cancel, since it serves the same purpose).

Btw how do you stop a timer?

that's what i was requesting, a way to delete timers.  i think czechboy is just one of those perfect people who never makes a mistake and sets a timer he needs to cancel, so the idea of deleting a timer before it's time just never occurred to him :)

aren't they all quick one time usage timers? (unless you archive them explicitly)

Welcome to the site Alex, it makes me happy to see you stop by here and post  :-*

Really wonderful work you are doing.

I will be sure to post some suggestions for some ideas here soon.

nice video demo.

i have to say it again, this plugin is just wonderful.

fun idea: in status bar instead of showing "Timer" when you type tm, how about showing the current date+time (e.g. "Timer - May 02, 2008 - 10:16 am") and maybe even if you feel like it showing the time until the nearest alarm(?).

Ok. it is managed by FARR.debug, so I can not do anything about it right now. The only way is not to use FARR.debug

you could just play a wav file from your javascript before showing the message, no?

when an alarm goes off the sound played should be a nice wave file.

I've been neck deep in chess play for the past year and it's been a healthy distraction for my brain.

For people who might not believe zaine about this, what he forgot to mention is who is has been playing chess against:

And here is the board they have been using:

There is also this page of the real girls of the chess world.  Warning to geeks: You will fall in love and have your heart broken a hundred times over if you visit this page, so please be careful and think twice if you want to click this link.

i dont mind having to edit archive.text to manually delete items from the archive.
i just think you need a way to delete a timer once you set it!

I use FARR.debug for alert window and as far as I know it is not possible to change wav there.
i meant that in the settings page where you let users configure how the timer plugin works, you could let them override a path to a custom .wav file.

3) Yeah... maybe...

right now you have a nice menu shown to user when they select the timer:
Alert in 1 Days 14 Hours 58 Minutes 22 Seconds
=========================
A) Archive

Why not just add:
D) Delete

to let them delete it.

If you wanted to get fancy you could even add a:
R) Replace

Which basically would just delete it an add text in search edit which repeated the original timer line used to add it, which would let user quickly change something and re-add.  just an idea.

This reminds me of: http://www.associate...ize_your_laptop.html

Can US Customs Search & Seize Your Laptop Computer Without Cause? YES They Can!
Ninth Circuit Court Decides that US Customs and Border Patrol Agents Can Search & Seize Electronic Equipment Without Cause

On July 24, 2006, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit decided that US Customs and Border Patrol Officers had the right to search and seize a person’s laptop computer, computer discs and other electronic media. Nowhere has this information been broadcast. Millions of travelers know nothing about this ruling.

I actually found this quite shocking when i first heard about it.  And don't be mistaken into thinking that this means that if they really are convinced you are a criminal they will call in someone special team to examine your laptop but it will never happen to you.  It appears from anecdotal evidence (ask DC member Veign) that normal customs agents may just casually select people laptops, open them up and start looking around at your files, etc.

12288 is not brave.

Someone should try 9999999.

But please don't try it on a pc with real data on it :)

Is there a way to delete a timer?

Very minor suggestions for improvement:
1) an option to play a nice little alarm wav file (letting user customize and override a default wav file would be nice but not nesc.)
2) when user clicks Advanced options in FARR plugin configuration dialog it should show settings.
3) provide a way to delete timers.
4) I noticed that you can do tm # to show details about a timer including the amount of time until it triggers (really cool!).  i wonder if it might be nice to have an option to show this info on the main tm listing of timers (this might require 2 rows per timer entry) -- this is just an idea im not sure if it's a good one.
5) the example text for setting a "tm on" date says to use . to separate the day, month, year but this is clearly wrong and will result in prematurely setting the timer.  hitting a period after only typing a day or month should not trigger adding the timer since its an invalid date.
6) it would be nice if there was either an option or an alternate input format (such as using DAY-MONTH-YEAR vs. MONTH/DAY/YEAR) for crazy americans.

But I have to say this is a wonderful plugin.

It's also definitely convinced me to add the plugin api function that will have FARR inform the active plugin about idle time intervals, so that you could have the memo listing the timer countdowns be "live" and dynamically updated as long as the memo is on screen.

Holy cow this is cool!
Very well done and simple and fun to use, with some cool options.

Tip: look at the example text given for each type of timer.  I was a bit lost until i realized i had to put a period after the values to finalize and store your timer, until you do that it's not stored/activated.
23545
nice find justice, that's quite telling.

The problem with the exe's are my fault not skrommel.. I made a batch script to recompile all of his ahk exes so that i could recompile them with latest version of autohotkey occasionally to stop the damn false virus alerts that plague compiled ahk scripts due to lazy antivirus coders.

But it seems a few of the ahk scripts have external resources that skrommel builds into them and my batch script results in a broken exe.  Skrommel is a very reclusive genius type and sometimes it's hard to get him to give me advice on how to proceed.  I will try to get the exes fixed right away.

and copy the Timer.dcupdate file over into DcUpdater\Installables directory?

no.  leave the dcupdate file where it is in the plugin's directory -- it will be found by the updater when it checks for updates to Find+Run Robot.

I've written about this before.. It's a very strange sad feeling as a programmer when you find that someone else has coded a program you wanted to write, and done a good job, leaving you with no real reason to write your program, but still the lingering urge to do so.   But with so many program ideas floating around, it just seems a waste to write something that already exists.

I must have forgotten is from that post.

Believe it or not i had actually recently done some planning for ContextMenu Commander and found all the pieces i needed.  But the latest version of FastExplorer does 90% of what ContextMenu Commander was supposed to do, and it seems to be under active development by nice people.  So there is a very good chance that ContextMenu commander will now be abandoned.  I hope the author will stop by here and maybe people can give him suggestions and requests.

Living Room / Typeracer: Flash Game of the Week
« Last post by mouser on May 01, 2008, 02:54 PM »
This game is getting mentioned all over the place in the last few days.  I finally gave in and tried it, despite what sounded like a boring concept to me.

Truth is, it's done very well and is a fun way to practice your typing.

The concept is very simple, you and other people online type the same block of text to advance your cars along a line.  The fastest typer wins.  Very low tech visuals but it's a very clean interface and the multiplayer part just works well and helps motivate you.

The best part of it is probably that the text you type is selected from books and movies, and after you complete a "race" the page tells you about the text you just typed.  It's a great way to make it more entertaining.
