Find And Run Robot / Re: Bug?
« Last post by mouser on May 10, 2008, 03:19 PM »
seems like it must be a bug in FARR, something to do with thinking the / character is telling it a directory to search in or something.. i will look into it this weekend.

I was just cleaning up my amazon.com wishlist and wondering if a firefox extension existed to let me handle multiple checkboxes easly, when i came across this article on ghacks.net: 10 Useful Firefox Add-ons That Don’t Get Glamorised where martin mentions CheckFox:

Enables quick check/uncheck of checkboxes: To use, select area of page with checkbox(es), and then right-click. You should see Check and/or Uncheck depending on the clicked or unclicked state of the checkboxes.

If I could wave a magic wand I'd create something like FARR or nDroid but made to scan a couple files of info and return matching lines rather than various directories returning matching files.

I keep meaning to write this plugin for FARR or encourage someone else to write it.  A simple text-file information lookup plugin would be so useful and simple.  It's long overdue.

Hi Reckoner and welcome!! Nothing makes me happier than seeing new potential plugin coders post.  Ecaradec is the coder who wrote this fscript sdk, and i know he will be by soon to help answer this and also release an update to the sdk soon i think.

Smartdraw and ConceptDraw are two of the big alternatives to Visio.

I've been a long time fan of Edge Diagrammer since it's early days.  It's no where near as bloated and complicated (or powerful if you want to think of it that way) as the big guys, but it is for me much easier and funner to use, and so perfect for when i just want to do some quick sketching of an idea.

I think you have to ask yourself how you are going to use this tool, and perhaps more importantly, are you going to have to share your work with others.  Visio may be a pain, but it is also commonly installed and used on some large projects, and even if you don't love it, it may make sense to force yourself to learn and use it if you need to work with others on diagrams.

General Software Discussion / Linux Journal: Readers' Choice Awards 2008
« Last post by mouser on May 08, 2008, 03:12 AM »
Even though this forum mostly focuses on Windows software, it's always useful to have some linux talk and to keep informed about the state of software development on the linux platform.

The Readers' Choice Awards take the current pulse of the Linux Community year. Here are the tools you use every day in your work and play.

Back in January and February, we surveyed you, our readers, to find out what Linux-based products, tools and services you prefer these days. More than 5,900 of you completed the survey, and your favorites are the worthy recipients of the 2008 Readers' Choice Awards. Although some results are predictable, many are certain to both interest and surprise you.

The DcUpdater used by FARR actually does this mostly.. It has the ability to read a files of available updates and install them on demand.  You can actually see this with FARR, some plugins are available to install on the AvailableForInstall tab.

However, these available plugins are known to the updater because they were listed explicitly in the original FARR installation.   It's a much nicer idea to add a facility in DcUpdater so that an application can specify a web page where all plugins are listed.  That would make it so that if a new plugin was released, it would show up in the list of plugins that can be installed.  I will put that on my todo list for DcUpdater.

Living Room / Re: Elite Forces Defense, another hero TD
« Last post by mouser on May 07, 2008, 07:35 AM »
Very nice.  Even has an online map editor.
I get the feeling from playing it that there is a lot of strategy that could come into play.  Coders clearly had fun with this one and implemented some very cool stuff.

I am also very impressed with the way they did the "Hero" part of it.  Basically in addition to the normal stationary tower defenses, you have a "hero" you can move around on the screen.  Normally i really dislike this idea since i dont like to micro manage in a TD game.  But this is a great compromise because you dont target or shoot for your hero, which means you can basically just move your hero someplace and leave them there for most of the time.  So very minimal guidance is needed.

thanks app, hopefully it looks a little better now.

This post here about recentX made me think that a nice plugin for FARR would be one that listed recently opened documents and recently executed programs, sorted by last access date (i.e. most recently used at top).

Do you think it is possible to have function copyfromlastactivewindow which would take a look into last active window and if it finds highlighted area it would send it to FARR (JS SDK)?

See screenshot for configuration of hotkey:
Screenshot - 5_6_2008 , 11_47_04 PM.png

So basically FARR let's you configure certain hotkeys that should copy selected text in current application before triggering FARR.  When you combine that with the ability to configure the search text associated with a hotkey, you have the pieces you need to make dictionary and other searching type hotkey triggers.

It would be nice to ALWAYS trying to copy selected text when triggering FARR but that can cause problems.

The other thing is that FARR records the last active window, so a plugin could always ask FARR for this window handle and try to do other stuff with it.

Armed With Wings: Beautifully animated and with wonderful sense of atmosphere.  A samurai and his bird battles evil.

From JayIsGames.com review:
At its core, Armed with Wings is an action/puzzle platformer, and no amount of glitz and glamor is going to change that. But even if you're sick to death of platformers, this game offers something special: an innovative game mechanic with polish and style. Snazzy cut scenes before and after boss fights add some great eye candy, while an evenly-progressing difficulty system keeps you from throwing in the towel.

lrosenfeld,

the idea bout storing and retrieving encypted passwords might not be worth the effort, only because the existing good password management tools (keypass) are pretty darn good, and most include live search functionality.  when you combine that with the importance of secure handling of this info, it makes me think this plugin idea may be more trouble than it's worth.

however i do think a general purpose note saver/searcher/displayer is an important missing idea to farr plugin collection, and it's always possible that encrypted items could be added to that that could do the kind of thing you want eventually.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / FARR Plugin Idea Holy Grail - DQSD (400 searches)
« Last post by mouser on May 06, 2008, 07:21 PM »
I don't think there's all that much more to it, but i've simplified the description of all the steps, and i do think the nature of what's happening with dynamically running snippets of javascript is unusual enough that it could be a little tricky.

There are two additional things i glossed over:
  • There are a few javascript functions that the blocks of search code call to interface with the main program -- these have to be discovered and implemented.  these are mainly functions to actually load the desired url, but there are some other helper functions.
  • Some of the search xmls define an html form, and invoke it -- i'm not sure exactly how that works -- i think it's probably something very close to how some of the existing FARR javascript plugins present a form.

In summary -- there are enough little tricky and unusual pieces that i suspect it will require some effort to get it working.  Definitely a challenge, but not an insurmountable one.
