I am always willing to defend a fine piece of software. I am not saying RF is without flaws, by all means its far from flawless, but it does its job well and the bugs encountered are a rarity. Please, dont confuse liking a product with zealotism. After all, we are all not ZRidling and willing to jump down anyone's throat for saying anything remotely negative about a prodcut they like.

Yes, I ran out of activations (I think its around 10 per license) once. I contacted them about it and asked for more and they reset my count. It took about 2 hours for them to reply.

After warning just two weeks ago that the conversion of workplaces' information infrastructure to XML "must not be disruptive," the open source group that helped catalyze that conversion has apparently ceased to exist.

The OpenDocument Foundation has disappeared, taking with it its Web site and having deleted pages Google had been hosting for it, including news on its Compound Document Format translator project.

The only official confirmation of the group's disbanding was provided yesterday, in the form of the two-word sentence, "It is," appearing in Foundation co-founder Sam Riser's blog posting yesterday.

I agree with John. Roboform's activation procedures is actually very tame compared to quite a few other product's I've tried.

rjbull: The activation is one time, and takes about 30 seconds. Yes, it does suck that you have to activate, but its a small measure compared to larger corporations which require this, a 25 character key, a hardware hash, a credit card number (last 4), and your email address to activate the product (ala adobe/macromedia).

Roboform and Roboform2go are the best products of their kind and I recommend them whenever I can. I own 4 licenses, two fixed, 1 portable and 1 palm. Great product.

I think this is a bug in the forums. There is no way to access private messages if you dont have a new message waiting. Mouser, I think we need to add PM's to the toolbar.

And the source of the problem reveals itself! Mouser is a great software developer, but like some, he lacks the capability to select an adequate name for his product. Consistency among names, unneeded descriptive words, and sheer weirdness plaque some of these product line names.

Just leave the math portion out of future names, or the robot keyword ;-) When I see the full name of FARR spelled out, I expect some robot to come and do power searching of my computer for me with some high tech gadgetry.

After recent postings regarding the names of some of the products released by mouser, I have come to the conclusion that some of these products desperately need a renaming.

What do you think? Should mouser allow his users to pick the names of the products? I mean, come on, what type of name is "Clipboard Help+Spell" or "Find and Run Robot"? What is this robot spoken of in the name of FARR? And what is the deal with CH+S? Is that a product title or a math problem?

Lets make a stand! Let the users pick!

General Software Discussion / Re: Maybe Vista doesn't suck?
« Last post by Josh on November 09, 2007, 12:19 PM »
I don't think you can hold drivers against Vista.

Of course we can. Either stuff works or it doesn't. XP mostly does, Vista often doesn't. I don't care if it is because I have unusual stuff, because MS have done a bad job or because other people haven't updated their drivers.

And if I'm worried about drivers, I'm not going to upgrade without being certain that everything I have or might get will work with Vista (and there's still quite a bit of software that isn't compatible and some less maintained stuff that probably will never be).

And having Vista on one computer and XP on the others means I know that I never think "I wish I had Vista on this computer", but do sometimes wish I didn't have Vista at all.

So, you blame Microsoft for the fact that your stuff doesn't work? This, my friend, is where Microsoft gets screwed over. They are forced to retain backward compatibility with the sacrifice of not being able to move forward in technology. Microsoft decided to make changes to the driver model to adjust to what technology is available now and where we currently stand in the technological era. I, personally, don't understand how Microsoft can be faulted for the end user requiring them, yes requiring because users value the use of their old hardware (apple doesn't have this problem since their user base is so small and their hardware isnt as easily upgraded or vast in selection), to maintain backwards compatibility when it comes to driver models and honestly commend Microsoft for moving forward and changing things for the better (I.E., no unsigned drivers in 64 bit Windows).

You say it is harder for device manufacturers to make these new drivers, I again don't agree here. Microsoft has had API's available since Vista entered beta status. That is well over a years time to make drivers which will operate on Vista. Yes, the model changed, but the time existed and was given for manufacturers to update their code.

I have several purchased WMA/WMV protected media files which play fine with no excessive usage. As stated above, the only built-in DRM with Vista is in regards to HDCP protected content, as stated above, that is included in the new age HD formats. So, unless you play a BRD or HD-DVD in a video window in the corner of your screen, you wont notice any performance hits.

Zaine: I've asked this every time someone raises the "problems" you mention. What problems have YOU experienced with DRM and WGA? Everytime I ask this, I never get a reply. It seems that most users get upset over problems OTHER users have claiming them as their own. DRM has never caused me a problem.

I don't think you can hold drivers against Vista. Thats a problem with developers not updating their drivers to be Vista compliance.

I think part of why tinjaw cant catch up is that he is posting on IRC. Here is the latest quote

[08:40pm] <tinjaw> deo, there are several ways
[08:41pm] <tinjaw> deo, let me get it up and running
[08:41pm] <dcDeozaan> ok
[08:41pm] <tinjaw> first way
[08:42pm] <tinjaw> when you have TGB running
[08:42pm] <scancode> Shamurai, ok

As you can see, its entirely his fault for posting nonsense ;-)

Carol, not to side track here, but I never once thought that you and I would agree on any particular topic. Cheers  :beerchug: ;-)

How are linux distros not considered choices? I can count, from memory, at least 12 different distros which can all be considered major players in the market. Yes, software might be similar on each, but it is not the same. The update package manager for one distro is not the same as on another. One uses apt-get or a gui alternative, one use rpm, another uses some custom scheme. There is no set way. This is just ONE example of the inconsistencies that exist among the major linux players. For the OS to be taken seriously, google will have to make something that all of the linux fans can jump behind and support. Without support going towards one major distribution, linux will never be more than a tech geeks hobby.
2325
You see, the problem with google making GoS is this. We already have several linux distributions which work, do so fairly well, and are pretty easy to use. The only problem for the consumer is that there are far too many of them. Its like the beginning of the software age. Companies had to spend thousands of dollars training people on specific packages of software because each company used a different one. To be marketable in that age, you had to know whatever product the company you were applying for was using.

That is the problem with Linux. Yes, choice is good, however, too many choices is also counter-productive. The linux community needs to realize this and focus their efforts on one specific distribution. Google would be the perfect engine to focus this effort, however, I don't see many of the dedicated users for X distro showing support for a "merging" of sorts.
