I've written about this before on this thread, but i wanted to mention it again because of it's relevance to using FARR efficiently.

When programs are installed onto your PC using an installer, they by default go into your "C:\Program Files" directory (or if you are using windows x64 something similar).

Such programs always create start menu items, and you remove them using an uninstaller.

Now, occasionally you will download a program that has no installer.  That you are meant to copy yourself to a permanent directory somewhere.

My advice, and the point of this post, is to recommend that you do NOT put such programs in your "C:\Program Files" directory.

I'm advocating that you make your own directory (I use "C:\ProgramFiles" no space, but you could use anything).  By keeping these files in a separate directory, you will know that these files do not have uninstallers and so you can delete them manually, and do not have entries automatically put in your start menu, etc.

For FARR this is useful because you can add this directory to your search folders and it will be scanned very quickly since it is so small, vs. trying to add the massive "C:\Program Files" directory which should be kind of pointless anyway since the programs there should already have start menu items.

Developer's Corner / Re: Question...
« Last post by mouser on June 27, 2008, 12:17 AM »
First, just to point out that Borland Developer Studio, which is now known as Codegear RAD Studio, is quite a different thing than "Visual C++" which is Microsoft's product.  Either way, both good tools in my opinion.

Which basically brings me to my answer.

Languages seem to be evolving more rapidly these days than they were 20 years ago, and companies these days probably like to see someone who has a more flexible set of programming skills and multiple languages.

There are always going to be jobs that target a specific platform and language, but your best bet is to get some experience with a variety of languages and platforms.  That's not to say that you shouldn't pick one that you really enjoy and get really good at it, but make sure you learn enough so that you can talk intelligently about why you would use one over another for any given task.

I'm a very big advocate of object oriented programming, because i think it helps shape your mind into being better suited to write serious large-scale code, but with the focus on web applications these days, it's just essential that you are familiar with one of the web-centric languages like php, python, ruby, etc.

very cool movie :)
by the way the crashing is gone, the auto grab screen and and color works.

it's hard for me to control it well -- i think my background is a bit noisy and webcam not so good, so it's a little hard.

it's fun to try to think of other uses of this tool..
i can imagine using it to track a bug's movement over time, like a ladybug or something, put your webcam on it and switch into paint mode :)

More skins for FARR (Find and Run Robot) are actually available along with a skin builder here:
http://www.link-rank.com/download.htm

Download the skin packs (and the builder if you want to make your own).

I'm going to try to fix this today.
Thanks for the nice comments CatamountJack (had to look up the word catamount).

Thanks -- yeah i'm not diminishing the bug, just getting clues to help me figure it out. Thanks, i'll put it on todo list.

before anyone starts to reply -- no politics please.. let's keep this on carlin.
if you didn't agree with his politics you probably also didn't find him funny, but we might all agree it's nice to hear someone speaking his mind in an age where people often have to choose their words so carefully.

how about some youtube videos for people who aren't familiar with his sharp wit:
http://www.youtube.c...earch_type=&aq=f

one of the things i admired about him is that unlike many comedians who started out with a biting raw angry approach and then got really tame and safe as they get more famous and wanted to break into mainstream.. carlin went the opposite direction -- from a normal comedian to someone who got angry when he saw bullshit and tried to expose it with humour.

yes, i will be doing this.

The main purpose of URL Snooper is to sniff network traffic and extract URLs on the fly -- that's what makes the program special.

But did you know that URL Snooper also has a built in file/folder searching function?

Just drag and drop a file onto the URL Snooper window, and the program will scan it for urls -- doesn't matter if it's a binary or text file.

Drop a folder onto the URL Snooper window and it will recursively scan all files in all subfolders.

Now you know.

ps. don't forget that you can use the protocol and keyword filters to limit results to those matching some criteria. and that by default URL Snooper only shows multimedia URLs, so if you want to show ALL urls, switch to advanced mode choose to view all url protocols.

Thank you so much for such a nice write-up  :-* :-* :-*
It's impossible to describe how much such things help motivate me (or any coder) to keep working on a program -- it really does mean a lot to me.  Thank you.

ps. you might want to try a smaller dc image/button if you want to put one on your site, i think we have to retire those big ones.

some small ones:

my webcam was connected the whole time, and showing in the windows.
it's only when i press the Grab Screenshot button in the finetune dialog that the error occurs.

if you then restart farr, is the problem solved?
22846
alias commands can be called also from javascript so you can use "paste" command there

just to reiterate and clarify:
any result command you can issue from an alias, like:
paste, showhtml, etc

you can run from a javascript plugin by calling
FARR->set_strvalue("launch","paste BLAH BLAH");

There was a suggestion that i hope we pursue soon to make a more generic javascript scripting system based on dqsd which would make it a LOT easier for people to make javascript-style mini-plugins/scripts, without having to go through the entire process of having a dll, etc.

gogogadget, can you see if version 2.12.03 solves the slow read/write of settings file issue?

I'd love to get a report on whether the new version (2.12.03) still suffers from this problem.

Note that as of 2.12.03 this has become an option -- so after you update to the next version you probably will have to go to general options tab and change launch method to method #2
