General Software Discussion / Re: Injecting HTML into Outlook?
« Last post by rjbull on July 02, 2008, 10:47 AM »
Curt, you're making suggestions faster than I can try them!  Thanks!   :D

The Auto Context add-on in Firefox partially works.  For the experiment, I set Outlook 2003 to send HTML by default, then copied the text via Auto Context.  What I got was most of the fonts, but no colours and (I think) no underlining.  I suspect that the problem there is with Outlook, not Firefox + Auto Context.  At least it's a small improvement, thanks.

Now I have to look at SendPageByMail too   :)

I thought IE might work, but use Firefox as my default browser.

In fact, I've just this minute realised that the scrollwheel doubles as the apparently missing middle mouse button...

@rjbull: if you had stayed "un-realised" then you'd endeared yourself to many in this thread. ;D

I never said I like it that way!   :D

And I really don't want to run a super-duper-multi-purpose tool to do this, as I have a slow CPU and very little RAM on this pc.

By the way, I couldn't reach that site with the link you provided, but this one did work: http://powerpro.webeddie.com/

Glad you found Ctrl-LeftClick worked!

The link is working now...  PowerPro is a relatively resource-light application especially for all it does, but it rather becomes a way of life.  You could try some of the other macro programs instead, of course.  At least some of them should work on Win9x.  E.g. Macro Maker, which is dated 2003.

if you're using a desktop software for RSS agregation, which one are you using and why?

GreatNews because it works through the proxy.pac-type proxy we have at work.  Some of the others don't, like FeedReader (even though it says it can use whatever IE is using).

i don't use Outlook on a daily basis so i'm not sure but one way to test is to 'Send Page by e-mail' from IE and see if that works.

That only seems to send it as an attachment.  I could do that, of course, but sometimes I'd rather send a prettified e-mail without people having to open an attachment.

Firefox 2.0.0.12 doesn't seem to have a "Send page by e-mail," only send link.

@curt:  thanks, will look at it, but I have to re-start Firefox and I'll do that later.

From what I understand, you are looking at the raw view of the recycle bin. (are you using xyplorer?)

Total Commander actually, but yes, raw view.

All the files present there, can be found on the recycle bin (in a much more interesting form ;) ).
If you remove the files from recycle bin, they disappear from the Recycler folder.

Aaauuuggghhh!  I am covered in confusion   :-[ :-[ :-[

Many thanks!   :)

I don't often look at the desktop, launching things by other means.  I just made a shortcut to the Recycle bin and put it in my Popsel menu, so I don't have to minimise everything else and go looking for the icon.

I run PowerPro, and don't know if this is PowerPro-specific.  Under PowerPro, shift-left-click works as if it were middle-click.  That's what I've been doing for ages.

In fact, I've just this minute realised that the scrollwheel doubles as the apparently missing middle mouse button...   :-[

edit by jgpaiva: fixed powerpro link
edit2 by jgpaiva: really fixed the powerpro link.. Last time i replaced it by www.powerpro.com :-[ Sorry!

General Software Discussion / Injecting HTML into Outlook?
« Last post by rjbull on July 02, 2008, 03:35 AM »
At work we have to use Outlook, the full version, not Express.  I have it set to plain-text e-mails but occasionally I need fancier formatting.  If I have a pre-existing HTML page, is there any way I can get it into Outlook as an HTML message?  All I seem to get is the plain text, or HTML as code that doesn't render.  I was somehow expecting to be able to drag and drop, or mark a piece and copy it into Outlook like you can from a browser into EverNote.

TIA...

General Software Discussion / Undelete - am I missing something?
« Last post by rjbull on July 02, 2008, 03:30 AM »
On WinXP, if I look in c:\Recycler I find several enigmatically-named subdirectories, all containing desktop.ini and INFO2.  The latter looks like an index.  Eventually, I find the subdirectory that contains deleted files with their names changed to "Dcnnn.{ext}" where the original extension is retained.  - hmmm...  Dc?   8)

If the deleted files are still there, renamed, and there's an index, is there really not an undelete function built into Windows?

Quick File Compare. Check out with a single click whether two files are same or different.

Yaaah!

I thought that would please somebody   ;D  And how nice to see author DonL responding so fast to requests

Evernote has moved on to be a web application.  So the standalone version that we're still using is discontinued.  That's all I meant.

OK, I see what you mean, thanks.  I certainly have no plans to move to a Web-based application.

XYplorer 7.30 has been released on 30-Jun-2008. Here's a quick introduction to the main new features:

After two years of continuous development Catalog-Based Browsing finally takes over: Now you can hide and switch off the Tree by a quick Shift+F8, and browse via Catalog only.

Quick File Compare. Check out with a single click whether two files are same or different.

Support for Hard Link creation. The new command is located in the Paste Special menu.

List Management: Now you can move items to new list positions via drag-n-drop. Big plus in usability.

In version 7.20 the mouse wheel did not always work depending on the manufacturer. Fixed.

New command "Open Folders in Tabs" allows you to easily switch sets of tabs.

A nice extra feature of EverNote is that if you put two terms in the search box, it treats them as a Boolean AND, highlighting the search strings in different colours.  Boolean searching is valuable to me.

Aww!!  I never realized that!  That kicks butt!  Evernote was such a great program.

It's a great feature!  But... it "was" a great program?  It still works here...

AZZ was the very first program that I noticed the feature in years ago.  But it only searched the titles of the cards, not the entire database.

That seems to me AZZ's greatest limitation.  The Web site has quite a few user-submitted cardfiles, and the ones that seem to me most successful are the simplest ones.

Following the link to here in the MyLifeOrganized review update:

Another simple card file with what looks to me very good live search, which they call it Filter-on-typing:  AZZ Cardfile.  It holds the data on disk and the index in memory for fast search and sensible retrieval.  Interesting claim:

Cards limit should be around 2,000,000,000 - be the first to try it. Each card can hold any amount of data, it is limited only by system memory resources. We have tested cardfile with 100,000 cards, size of one card was over 10 MB.

The last free version, which works entirely in memory, can be found here.  Keep paging down to "Old versions" at the bottom of the page.

Here's another one: ColorConsole, freeware from the author of the Q-Dir file manager.  Won't automatically load Tame-DOS, but has tabbed windows.

using the keyboard is easier and faster for us

That's part of why I want my own favourite text editor: being one of the galaxy's Elder Race from Planet DOS, I like WordStar controls, the ultimate in keyboard-centric applications.  WordStar is the True Faith as far as getting text onto disk is concerned.

i wouldnt reccomend gmx as it is very slow, and opens alot of new windows (not tabs) seemed to force a new window

I haven't found it slow, but agree about the windows.  It's Java, I think, seems a bit overcomplicated, and doesn't work as well as it might with non-standard browsers like K-Meleon.  However, all you have to do is set up GMX once, then pick up your mail by POP3 or whatever.

I think GMX can do this, but haven't had the account long and haven't specifically tried filtering and forwarding.  However, both appear to be there in the settings.  GMX has only recently reappeared in the UK, but they're long-established elsewhere and said to be good.

In addition to your 5 GB mail storage capacity, GMX File Storage gives you another 1 GB of space for your documents and media.

I just wish TB! would let you define your own text editor  :(  I was a "point" on Fidonet for ten years, using the mighty GoldED, and while GoldED had a rudimentary text editor built in, for normal messages I preferred to use my favourite text editor VDE under it.  I fail to see why Windows programs can't do the same   >:(

Finished Programs / Re: AltTab Fingertips v1.3 - 14 Jan 08

rjBull the menu should always comeup at your mouse pointer, so that minimal mouse-travel is needed to use it. Do you find that is not the case or not logical for you?

I'm a keyboard person, not a mouser, most definitely not THE mouser(!)   :)  but I use a mixture of console-mode and WinGUI programs.  So I sometimes have to move the mouse around, then wonder why ATF has moved too.

Maybe there's a script somwhere that automatically parks the mouse pointer at a given location after so many seconds mouse inactivity?

I like your dismiss hotkey feature too :)

:)

@ur1sn00per: maybe that makes it clearer?  I use F12 as the hotkey, which is at the opposite end of the top row from Esc.  Alt+Tab is a left-hand-only action.  Using F12 and Esc needs both hands.  Just a minor ergonomic point.

+1 for icon display.

Two more thoughts/requests:

  • Could its screen location be locked, so that it always appears in the same place on the screen?  At present it seems to move around a bit, and I'd rather know in advance where to look for it.
  • Could the hotkey be a toggle?  That is, suppose you press the hotkey and the ATF menu comes up, and you didn't want to do that.  Could pressing the hotkey a second time while the menu is on screen be made to dismiss the menu?  I know Esc dismisses it, but Esc might be far away on the keyboard from your chosen hotkey.

General Software Discussion / Re: Let go of your bookmarks!

I'll send an e-mail to myself, or someone I think would be interested in the site, containing a link and a short description along with some keywords (tags, basically) to make it easy to search for--years later from right within my Gmail.

That's a good idea.  I often keep a few notes in MemPad, even if nowhere else.  Despite Google, it seems to me worthwhile to keep original links somewhere, because Web pages can disappear.  If you have their original location, you have more chance of recovering them from the Wayback Machine.

Some of my bookmarks are in KeePass, because it's convenient for sites that require logins.
