General Software Discussion / Re: Xobni beta - Outlook Mail indexer and organizer
« Last post by Darwin on September 26, 2008, 01:00 PM »
ClearContext... I've just taken a look. Interesting. I does look similar to Xobni, though I can't tell if it has the same indexing features. One thing that strikes me about the Pro version is that the developer is touting things like the ability to turn e-mails into tasks and calendar appointments at the click of a button. DOn't know why I'd want to pay $90 for a feature that is already in Outlook 2007! (Perhaps it's not in 2003?).

Further, Xobni tracks and displays relationships between contacts - I'm not sure if ClearContext does this, either...

I like the sounds of Synplicity as well...

justice, I found this in the faq:

Price
How can you afford to offer Syncplicity for free?
We’re offering Syncplicity for free during our Beta period in order to test out the service and get as much of your valuable feedback as possible. It’s also one of the ways we want to thank you for starting to use Syncplicity early on, putting up with the occasional bug, and helping us build a product that suits your needs exactly. The Beta period will end on July 28th, 2008.

After the beta, Syncplicity will still offer free accounts. Please see our pricing for more information

So it looks like we missed the free beta by a good couple of months...

Note my reply in the above referenced thread. The discount *appears* to be short-lived, but in fact is probably not... They are offering a powerful product at a reasonable price (even without the discount) and with a lifetime licence, though...
2204
Just to let everyone know that the discount has been running for at least 8 months (and I expect it to be running beyond the end of September) ;) I took advantage of it in the beginning of Feburary. One nice thing about SilverAge's products is their lifetime licensing policy

eBay's installer is always just a click away should you ever change your mind.
(I'm joking! Hold the flames. ;))

You may be joking, but I'm SURE that this is exactly the thinking behind it...

This seems pretty standard to me, actually. Check out the program files folder for any program that offers to install a toolbar - particularly Yahoo! toolbar - and you'll probably find the installer for the toolbar lurking there, even if you opted not to install it. AFAICT, un-checking the "eBay Shortcuts" option does stop the installer from running, but it does dump the exe file into the unlocker directory under Program Files.

OK, I just checked and the ebayshortcuts installer WAS in the program directory (for Unlocker). None of the other links were on my system, though...

Weird - on my XP (x2), Win2k (x1) and Vista (x1) systems selecting NOT to install "ebay shortcuts" works... At least, I've always de-selected the option and gone ahead with the installation and I can't find any evidence that the shortcuts have been installed on any of my systems.

Thanks, Carol - I'll try the MailStore Home route (I've had it installed in the past). All I am worred about are e-mails, so this should be the perfect solution. I also have X1 Pro, but I don't have a server set up and would like all e-mail to be local. MailStore Home is an attractive idea because if I am reading your post correctly, I shouldn't have too much trouble syncing between multiple comptuers (at the moment I have five of my own plus my wife's work notebook).

Alternatively, I am open to the idea of switching to a different client. I used to love Eudora - it was so easy to take your e-mail and e-mail settings with you.

Heh, heh - as documented throughout this thread and throughout DC, I am a software addict and a file manager addict in particular. I have TC installed as well and love it. IIRC, there is a hack to have TC replace Explorer, but it's buried somewhere on the user forum. Because I have DO setup to do this, I haven't bothered with it.

BTW - nice webpage on TC, Karol

Once a month??

Two thoughts, first the second one: I LIVE in my file manager (DOpus 9). The first thought was, perhaps fenixproductions is like me and uses windows explorer RARELY because he uses a third party file manager most of the time?

Heh, heh, should have mentioned that my experience was in trying to get Maxthon 1.x approved at a college I worked at... You're right, though, no reason not to try!
2218
True but the key here is not a change of policy or allowance of installation, just a migration to a slightly better AND more secure alternative that also looks similar to the previous application.

My experience with IT suggests that this kind of an argument will fall on deaf ears. The decision has been made by somebody or somebodies high up in IT/Administration - they've deemed IE 7 vanilla to be adequate/secure enough, I doubt very much that they'll be either inclined to listen or pleased to have their decision questioned by a mere mortal.

Are you able to use CDs?

That would still try to (auto) run as an exe file, wouldn't it?

If you mean AutoRun, the semi-useless, auto-rootkit installing, rather pointless feature of Windows, then:
a) who in their right mind would have it enabled.
b) hold down the shift key if you can't disable it.
c) shoot the admin guys - it should never be enabled on a work related networked system IMHO.  Makes it far too easy to install unwanted programs/virii/rootkit/etc.

AFAIK, Portable Firefox on CD doesn't autorun anything, there's no autorun.inf file.  About the only difference between it and the USB flashdrive version is the .ini which either points temporary files to the users temp area on the HDD or sets the cache, history and whatever else so that nothing is written.

Actually, only a few days ago I saw a build/install of Firefox set up so that it didn't write anything at all to the host system but I can't remember where it was.

Agreed about autorun. My main point was that FF portable is an exe file that needs to be invoked, so AFAICT, it's still out of the running  ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: FinePrint vs. priPrinter

Looks impressive with some features not shared with either ClickBook or Fineprint (like re-arranging pages by dragging them around the preview with the mouse ) and the price is good as well (25.95 Euros = $40 CDN. vs. $49.95 for Fineprint). I'd be interested in hearing from any users as well.

General Software Discussion / Installers Hall of Shame
« Last post by Darwin on September 18, 2008, 06:21 PM »
Courtesy of Bill Pytlovany's blog, here's a link to a listing of program installers that insist on installing "extras" by default, such as toolbars and the like.

The problem has gotten so bad over the past two years that I ALWAYS select Custom install if it's offered to me; not doing so virtually guarantees that I'll be uinstalling something, usually Yahoo toolbar. I'm taking my cue from Bill and bookmarking the list

OK - that went quicker than I thought it would!

Here's a link: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/OpenWith.htm

that might help you. If nothing else, check out the permissions/ownership on the registry key that is mentioned: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ FileExts

And here's an MSDN article discussing how to populate the "Open With" list:
