Backup Guide / Re: Acronis now does backup of individual files/folders
« Last post by JavaJones on September 29, 2006, 07:35 PM »
I've experienced a lot of crashes and general instability with Iomega data software, from backup to CD burning. I'm interested in revisiting the Iomega sync app if it's improved, but it sounds like perhaps not. Anyone else playing with this? A nice and simple "as needed" (as files changes) backup app would be nice.

The free Cobian Backup can do some pretty decent backup as well as sync-type stuff. I don't think it stacks up against the commercial apps in some respects, but in other areas it seems to have been ahead for a while at least (like FTP backup, in either direction). Worth a look for a decent free app anyway:

They say places like keyboards and even toothpick holders at restaurants are dirtier than your average toilet seat. Weird stuff. I do want to rig up my bathroom for music, but I'd prefer a solution connected to a music streaming system somewhere else in the house, and with controls in the shower as well. :D

For a truly silent system, no HD's, check this out: http://inventgeek.co...Cooler/Overview.aspx  A tad expensive for solid state solution, and power outtages could be an issue. ;)

The Windows 1.0 sales pitch was a joke. It was of course the real Steve and he really said all that stuff and made the sales pitch, but the actual recording and production of it was not serious or intended to actually sell Windows. Or so I understand anyway.

This definitely does annoy me a bit, and I don't think ExtractNow quite handles it. It is however the only free app I know of that supports .sit besides Stuffit's own garbage. :D

Looks like there's a similar "Noise Sharpening" plugin for Winamp. Not sure it does the same thing quite, or is as effective, but the results sound the same as described in that thread. One of the benefits of using one of the most popular players is lots of support, of course. ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: foobar...honestly...WTF?! WTF?!
« Last post by JavaJones on September 27, 2006, 07:56 PM »
100 pages in that thread? Good god. Well, I looked through a few. Very little seemed particularly different or cool. I did like the album view in the playlist and the heirarchical media library (explorer-like). There was also mention of color coding in playlist as tracks end, for low bitrate files, etc. which seems novel but not really something I think I'd get much use out of.

My biggest question is whether you can easily save full configs. I mean let's say a "skin" or "template" or "config" consists of a layout, but the layout is dependent on several plugins I may not have. Can you easily package up all dependent files to share with others? I would imagine there's an easy way to share configs, but if it involves much more than equivalent Winamp skinning I can't say I'm inclined to fiddle with it. There just doesn't seem to be much real benefit.

Also of vital, vital importance to me: I'm sure it can read the Shoutcast directory, but does it have basically all the same online content as Winamp, like XM Radio? If not, no deal. Free streaming media rules. :D

So the question then is - if you don't have some crazy audio setup or automation needs or whatnot - what is the real advantage of Foobar? Why should I use this instead of say Winamp? Sure it's "lighter", but it seems a lot like the Opera vs. Firefox thing - in order to get all the Winamp functionality I'd want out of Foobar I'd have to use a bunch of plugins anyway, so it may not be so light anymore, and certainly is more difficult to setup. Opera and Winamp both work and have tons of functionality "out of the box".

I'm sure making converts of people isn't a priority with an app like that and I'm not asking for evangelism, but I do wonder sometimes if I'm missing something good. :D

Glad it went fairly smoothly. I'm planning to upgrade soon myself (unless the final is out soon :D), and thankfully I have way less mods than you do. :D 3+ separate forums to do though.

That's awesome! What a great home-build. It wasn't totally clear if the guy uses this *while* he's flying, or if he has someone else fly. It seems like it would work equally well for either though. Great stuff.

Developer's Corner / Re: Winning the attention lottery - nice blog piece
« Last post by JavaJones on September 18, 2006, 04:35 PM »
Once again good points, but the question remains: what to do about it? Ultimately what is "interesting" to people is what will succeed. The 2nd article links to a site http://www.findory.com/ that is supposed to use a "better system for determining news/good content". Unfortunately I found the majority of its story links to be fairly uninteresting and not really worth my time. Now this is just a brief sampling of the moment, so it doesn't necessarily say much. But a brief review of Reddit and Digg showed me things I was much more interested in.

Although I do agree with many of the points raised in these and similar articles, I also feel like they are almost as bad as those on the other side, promoting Digg, et al as "the future of the web". They are both extremes, imbalanced, over the top. I think these articles tend to exaggerate the problems with Digg, etc. and to use hyperbolic "examples" of problematic content or themes, while the other side does the same in reverse. Neither is right.

Ultimately we may simply be fighting against human nature though. Whether it's "good for us" or not, the most popular media these days does seem to be some of the "dumbest". It's not that there isn't good, intelligent media available - I wouldn't say that the media has been dumbed down recently per se - it's more that what suceeds or gets the most attention is usually the stupider or less useful stuff. It is this problem - the real popularity of mindless content - that is truly being railed against, and it is not a problem unique to the Internet by any means. So I think if nothing else these sorts of articles may be pointing the finger the wrong direction. The problem is perhaps even cultural. And how do you deal with *that*? :D

Whether you get 2 CD's, 1 CD with junk, 1 DVD with junk, or the hard drive partition with junk usually depends on when you bought your computer and what model/series it's in. The business systems tend to ship with less crap. The newer systems are going for HD partition from what I've seen, with the optional recovery disk, but the disk is usually a DVD these days and does include all the crapware.

F.E.A.R. is one of my favorite games of the last couple years (along with Half Life 2 and Call of Duty) so this is pretty cool. I actually haven't played much of the multi but I'd be into having a go if other DC-ers are game. Maybe the best way to organize it would be IRC or IM?

General Software Discussion / Re: Opera CEO's interviewed in slashdot
« Last post by JavaJones on August 24, 2006, 12:02 PM »
Reasonably interesting interview, even if many of the answers were pretty uninformative. As some of the /.otters commented, I would have expected, or at least liked to see some more straight-up, technical answers for the /. crowd. Also, why did it take him a year to answer? :P

As for the plugin support, well this was a year ago, before Opera 9, and Opera 9 seemed to make no movement toward better plugin support (that I'm aware of). So unless it's in Opera 10 I'd say that was just lip service, sadly. :(

So like the value of paperback money, the accuracy of the "time" of a computer system depends on TRUST.  ;)

So then is the money of those who trust their government worth more? Hmm, it almost seems that way. :D

Hmm, looks promising. I should go and try some more of these things and see if I can get used to them this time...

What I *really* want is true session control. Have the ability save a "session" of Windows, clearing them from memory and all, but then be able to recall them to exactly that state later on. Sort of like a multi-hibernate function.

I am truly relieved to know it's "fake" (or at least a spoof). With Steve the way he is even today I wasn't about to assume it was anything but real - it's frighteningly plausible. ;)
