Living Room / Gizmo's TechSupportAlert website needs our help
« Last post by mouser on July 03, 2018, 11:20 AM »
Ian Richards who heads the TechSupportAlert.com website has put out a call for assistance.

There is no better website on the planet to learn about real freeware software, and Ian and TechSupportAlert have been true friends to us here on DonationCoder, always supporting our fundraisers and always being generous in their praise of our software.

This is an absolutely essential website for freeware lovers.  I hope everyone who has donated to DonationCoder will consider sending them a donation.  I know I will.

Gizmo's Freeware is one of the few remaining websites that is doesn't charge for reviews, doesn't offer pay-for-app listing services or accept reviews written by developers and advertisers. That’s the reason our reviews have always been honest and independent and that's the way we want to keep it.

However, we are currently under a lot of financial pressure and its coming from an unexpected source: our users. That’s because 46% of our users now use ad blockers and as a result, our general Google ad revenue has fallen sharply. Don’t get me wrong: we support the right of our users to employ ad-blockers. Hey, we have even recommended to you the best ad-blocking products!

But our fall in ad revenue is now limiting our ability to update our freeware reviews and expand our coverage. That affects everybody. We are looking at long term financial solutions but in the short term we need to survive.

We could easily raise more money by being more blatantly commercial, but we don't want to go there. Instead, we are running a fund-raiser campaign asking our loyal and understanding users to contribute a small amount as a donation to the site.

So please help Gizmo's remain independent and fearless by donating just a few dollars now. In our 16 years of operation I’ve only ever asked twice before for support and hopefully will not need to do so again for a long time. So please guys and gals, stand up and be counted at this time of need.

Makes sense.. As a workaround, you could use a program like my Automatic Screenshotter to automatically take screenshots of your desktop as the screen changes when it is running, so you would have those as a last resort.
Clearly not as good as the feature you are requesting, just a stopgap general purpose workaround.

Anyone?

When I use a hotkey to trigger a capture, then press a numeral to select a pre-defined area, then give the left mouse button a single click to capture, the focus stays on whatever application had the focus in the first place. This is true whether using MindManager, Chrome, Irfanview, or even the desktop with all apps minimized.

Ok, that sounds like a bug then, because when the post-capture dialog pops up, it should assume focus.  I will look into it.
2159
When the post-capture dialog appears, the focus remains on whatever window was active before the capture was triggered.

Hmm, that shouldn't happen.  Is it true for every app or are there some that are stealing focus.

2. I move my workspace from one folder to another in the course of a day. When I'm first saving a capture into a new folder, I'll need to do a "Save image as" to set the active file path.

That won't work -- when you do a Save As it does not change the default screenshot folder.  And when you use the Overide filename field in the post-capture dialog and hit enter, it always goes into the current default screenshot folder.  You'll have to open the main interface if you want to change the current default folder.

I need to give the file a unique name that depends on the original image. There's no way to automate the naming.
Ok for this you probably need to use the post-capture dialog.  Though note that there are some tweak options you can set to make that easier -- like making the dialog start with focus in the "Override filename" field -- I'm not sure if you are using that feature or using the "Save image as.." function.  The former is quicker.  You should be able to just type the name into that field and hit enter and be done (having it copy the image to the clipboard automatically after that).

You can also use the Thumbnail button to quickly make a thumbnail of your target size.  First use the thumbnail dialog via main menu File -> Create thumbnail and set the option you want.  After that you can just hit the Thumbnail button on the main toolbar.

If you need to make a thumbnail automatically after EVERY capture, you could use an external commandline tool for that and configure it to run after every capture, on the "Post-Capture Options" tab.

Thanks for posting Joseph (and thanks for you donation!).

I'm glad you are finding the new preset-size hotkeys useful.

One question: Is there a way to automatically send the capture to clipboard while retaining the ability to save it to file? I thought I saw an option like that but can't find it now. For now, clicking the button on the Pop-Up Choice Dialog does it, but maybe there's a way to have it be automatic?

The most efficient way to use SC for many of us is to turn off the pop-up post-capture dialog, and instead tell SC to stay minimized after capturing.  Then enable the option to always copy each new capture to the clipboard.  All captures are saved to file by default.  That's how I use SC.

In the new preferences dialog it's on the "Startup Options" tab of the dialog, second down from top:

Although repeat donations are always appreciated, we have never (ever) required anyone who has donated to our site to donate a second time to get a license key.  Any donation of any amount has always granted a lifetime license key for all of our software.
We are a tiny operation, so if ever in doubt -- if you ever have any difficulty with a license key, you can ask for help here on the forum, or email me ([email protected]), or submit a question through the website and we will help you get it sorted out or send you a new license key.

Thanks for your detailed description of your workflow, 4wd -- that's very helpful!

I will soon be adding a manual pruning/deletion function that you can trigger that will help you remove old/unwanted captures.
2167
A reminder for any users of Automatic Screenshotter:

Note: The automatic pruning (deletion) of old screenshots is now disabled by default), and there is a new easy option for enabling/disabling this function.

So if you used the automatic deletion/pruning options in the past, you will have to enable this in the new version, as it defaults to being disabled now, and in the prior version it was enabled by default.

I'd thought "I'd like to copy/move the file as safe as possible, so using Operating System native tools has my preference." = means use Api calls

That's what I meant -- to use the Windows API functions for CopyFile or CopyFileEx or the delphi file copy functions.

Welcome, Foghorn.

change their priority when you get focus and then go back to lower priority when you lose focus

This is the function of the "Boost Foreground Process to High Priority" option:

"Boost Foreground Process to High Priority - this is a somewhat controversial option which will automatically (temporarily) set the priority of the application you are currently using to high priority.  This should not normally be needed, as Microsoft Windows should give the current application plenty of CPU cycles, but it can be useful in odd cases where you want to devote more resources to whatever program you are currently using.  The process priority will be restored to normal when you switch to another application.  Note: The foreground process (currently active program) can still be tamed when this setting is enabled alone."

General Software Discussion / Geotagging your photos? gps4cam and other tools?
« Last post by mouser on June 24, 2018, 10:39 PM »
Does anyone have any experience with automatic geotagging of photos that they take?

Modern phones can probably do this quite easily, but mid-range dslr cameras seem to lack this feature -- you have to spend nearly a thousand dollars to get a good camera with built-in gps to geotag photos.

I have a friend who is interested in taking lots of photos and having them geo-tagged with gps location information.

One possible solution looks like combining a phone app with some post processing of photos, using a mobile app like gps4cam: http://gps4cam.com/

Anyone have any experience using software like this to add gps geotagging info to photos?
