Thanks for all the advice.
Unfortunately, after replacing the battery problem remains. Strange.

Find And Run Robot / Re: New feture request to this wondrful FARR tool
« Last post by mouser on December 26, 2008, 02:19 PM »
Welcome to the site pruthvi.

First let me say thanks for the kinds words.. and i hear what you are saying -- it needs to be easier or at least clearer to do what you want.

But try this to see how you could do what you want in your example:

  • Search for Skype.
  • When you see skype in the results, right click on it and choose "Add to Group Alias.." on bottom.
  • Then then choose "New Alias Group.." at bottom again.
  • Farr will create a new alias group for you and add skype to it.  Just give it a Group Alias Name, like "chat" in the top left box and hit Ok.
  • Now search for Yahoo Messenger.
  • When you see it in results, right click on it, choose "Add to Group Alias.." and select your new "chat" group at top.
  • FARR will add yahoo messenger below skype in the list.  Just click Ok.
  • Now when you want to show these programs, just type: chat
  • And FARR will list the contents of this group of items for you to choose from.

After you get more advanced you can do other things, like customize the labels that are shown for these items (precede items in group with LABEL HERE | path here).

You can also reorder the items in the alias group as you wish, add new ones via drag and drop, change the score of the alias group, or comment items with \\.

No worries  -- glad you find the program useful :)
i should probably redo the options at some point to make things a bit clearer, it is a bit confusing.

simple, just uncheck the options saying to show you balloon popup messages:

New beta version is up -- i hope that this solves the problem with bar showing on top of screensavers and games.  I will try to address Howard's issue next, and the problem with borders showing even when they shouldn't that was mentioned previously.

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / NANY 2009 Release: Multi Photo Quotes
« Last post by mouser on December 26, 2008, 03:31 AM »
NANY 2009 Entry Information

Application Name Multi Photo Quotes
Version 1.10.01
Short Description Photo and Quotes Screensaver Specialized for Multiple Monitor Systems
Supported OSes WinAll
Web Page https://www.donation...ouser/mpq/index.html
Download Link see page above
System Requirements
  • None; works on single monitor systems too.
Author Mouser

Description
This is a screensaver.  It will let you show your own photos and combine them with random quotes (supports quote book files from my PopupWisdom program and you can add your own).

The most important aspect of this program is that it is being designed mainly for multimonitor systems -- so you will be able to choose how different monitors are treated (photo can span monitors, or show dif photos on different monitors, etc.)

Planned Features
I will probably be adding lots of options to the program eventually, focusing again on the idea of multimonitor stuff.  Some ideas:
  • Support showing date+time fields in customizable ways across dif monitors.
  • Auto panning and zooming of images.
  • Nice effects for fading in and fading out multiple images in sequence.
  • I may include a tool to let people build their own customized screensavers to give to friends
  • Support for single monitors by dividing a monitor up into quadrants

thanks for pointing this out..  hopefully cody won't steal your menorah.

actually i believe cody is a dedicated atheist and hates all holidays, religious or otherwise.. he believes everyone should be coding 24hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

but nick dresses him up every once in a while against his will and snaps some photos to upload.

i do think that we should have more pictures of him for different holidays so that everyone feels equally honored/offended.

(in all seriousness i do not mean to favor one holiday over another!)

It's confusing to have the download in the first link and also attached..
Maybe best is to always update the one linked to in the first post, and then later on in the thread you can always just say:
"download the latest from the link in the first thread" instead of attaching?

« Last post by mouser on December 24, 2008, 02:25 PM »
Carol's point is good -- a canon all in one might be a very good bet.  figure out if you are likely to do more plain printing (laser printer) or scanning/faxing/colorprinting (all in one inkjet).  Either way, you can get one pretty small and cheap.
21116
After a recent battle with the computer i got it back together and working, but one thing has never been the same since:
When i remove power to the PC, and then turn it back on, the bios forgets the date and time.

Does it mean the motherboard battery is dead? or that i messed it up somehow?  seems odd timing.

I took out the printer.  I don't need one at home, and I can always print at work on better printer than I could ever get.

seems like a bad idea to me.  you can get a great laser printer for cheap these days.  the idea of getting a fancy new computer but not being able to print sounds insane.

here's a great rated brother *wireless* laser printer for $110:

Living Room / Flash Game of the Week Two: Eternal Red
« Last post by mouser on December 24, 2008, 07:44 AM »
Kyle over at JayIsGames sums up this great hybrid tower defense/shooter game well:

While I'm not the world's biggest fan of either strategic defense games or platform shooters, Eternal Red just seems to work so well that it quickly becomes a difficult game to put down. Instantly it grabs you with its simple yet dark and foreboding artistry: everything save the moon in the backdrop is done in black shapes outlined with red, and these wonderfully morose visuals are backed up with a macabre kind of techno soundtrack that manages to combine the oppressive mood of the setting with the intensity of the action. And that action is quite awesome.

UrlSnooper / Re: Problem with network adapter
« Last post by mouser on December 24, 2008, 07:41 AM »
thanks dlanor -- i will certainly change the default adapter test page.

actually for a very long time the test url pointed to a page on donationcoder.. but a few people were scared that the program was "phoning home" to our website and might be tracking them or something, so that's why i changed the default page to google, and made it user-configurable.

keep in mind the auto network adapter detection is 100% optional, and is not nesc. to use the program -- the easiest way is to set the adapter manually.

New beta is posted -- i'm leaving it as beta for now as i'm not 100% confident my changes won't cause an issue or two.

Most of the changes are there to help plugin writers, but a few bugs have been corrected here and there.

Very nice top-down shooter, similar to Robotron, etc., but with some nice exploration stuff.  Not particularly difficult (at least not the first mission), but nice control.
