Terminate meaning you have a domain registered (not hosting), say until December 2017 but want to get rid of it October 2017? Never heard that being possible, surprised to read you were able to do that in the past.

Yes, exactly.  And I've done it on Hover, GoDaddy, and Network Solutions before.

Living Room / Unable to Terminate Domain Registration
« Last post by wraith808 on October 01, 2017, 07:16 PM »
I've had my domain registration services with Hover/Tucows for a while, and have been very pleased.  However, something strange happened, and I wanted to verify what I was told.

I had a domain for a client.  That client terminated services by non-payment.  I kept it around for a while, but then terminated the last renewal period.  I received a notice from ICANN about the registration, and checked it out.  First I went to the URL... and it was pointed to a questionable alternative site.  That alarmed me, as I'm the registered domain holder.  I then went to Hover to try to terminate, and there was no way to terminate.  I've terminated before, so I was a bit perplexed.

So I was able to get into support chat, and they said I could only let it expire.  They said that this was a recent change to domain policy.

Has anyone heard of this?

Now they have a way to break things down so that they 'fail fast' and are more willing to do things the right way first, but they still don't listen most of the time, and complain when things are done exactly how they said they wanted.

I think we have the same job.. :)

I make plans for long term business needs, but we rarely follow the plan, because their needs change often.  I also try to interpret what these same people need, even while they try to convince me that their view of doing what they need to do is right, instead of telling me exactly what they need to do.  I fail, as much as I succeed, but that's OK, because in most cases when we get it done, they realize that I was right, though they never admit that.  So we do the work again.  Now they have a way to break things down so that they 'fail fast' and are more willing to do things the right way first, but they still don't listen most of the time, and complain when things are done exactly how they said they wanted.

I wonder why you would update your browser(s) to the latest versions, but refuse to update the OS to at least a decently updated version :-\
There are valid reasons. Im running xp on a machine because theres a known bug in vpn software that is used that if you connect with anything later to a windows 8.1 box, it can glitch out.

I am fed up to the back teeth with it - had enough - and am currently investigating potential alternatives to MBAM.

JRT, rKill and ADWcleaner, that is the trifecta I always use to get rid of malware on a infected Windows PC.

I think this is before, rather than after.  I'd rather not get the malware, than get infected and clean it.

So much of his work is not in electronic format and out of print- it's sad.

Someone put it better than I could - Goodbye to the most tireless ambassador of the future.  He collaborated with one of my favorite authors, Steven Barnes, a lot to great success (Beowulf's Children, The Legacy of Heorot).  A bit from him about Pournelle:

Steven Barnes, with whom Pournelle collaborated on several novels, told me in an email that “he was an absolute original, one of the best and smartest men I’ve ever known.”

Did the character "succeed" though? To be it looks more like the character got sent back to beginning opening up the interpretation that you shouldn't disregard others help because of your own stubbornness

He did in the end, it seemed to me, from his expressions to the differences in what he experienced, and more telling to the way that he was able to jump higher as show that he did at the end.

Perhaps the lesson was: Be determined and idiosyncratic and unreasonable in your pursuit of your dream, and embrace failure -- eventually the world will glitch out and you will slip behind the curtain of reality, behind the matrix -- and see things that normal people will never see, if only briefly.

Nicely put.

There is a lesson about life in that video, but i'll be damned if i can say what it is. which is, of course, the best kind of life lesson.

You will come across obstacles that seem impossible to you, but are easy to others, whether because of strength, wit, or guile.  Seeing you fail, out of the kindness of their heart, they will try to help you succeed.  Taking that help will kill some part of you that knows that you can do it.  Don't try to solve problems in the way that others do, or the way set before you, but in your own unique way, and you will succeed beyond your wildest dreams.

My own .02 interpretation

Yeah, I heard about that one from my brother who'd seen it on FaceBook.. Freakin' people man ... Damn.

On a side note, the power is back on. Seems it decided to make me a liar and go out about 10 minutes after my previous post about it still being on..

Isn't that the way it always is?  Glad you weathered it decently well.

Then, I bought a Dango wallet during the kickstarter.  And nothing else will do now.

Good luck getting through any kind of security with that.

Already have several times.  Just take the tool out, and it's compliant.  And I don't use the tool, so no problems on that regard.

And it's definitely less bulky than the ezgo (and many so called minimalist wallets) with the number of cards I have, and just as easy to get to them.  I carry around 3 credit cards, insurance card, license, and HSA card in the front, and 2 medical insurance cards, AAA card, work entry card, amusement park card (which I could do without, but knowing me, I'd forget it when I go), and Costco card in the back.

And I stick it in my front pocket with my keys very easily, and the lanyard lets me just grab it from my pocket to use the scan card for work very easily.

Yes, using a program based on stolen source code, with binaries compiled by an unknown party - what could possibly go wrong?

I have been using the build that I linked to in the post above yours for a while now with nothing going wrong.

I think the point is that past success is no guarantee of future success, especially when you're dealing with a bootleg copy.  Do you check the source every time you update?  And build it yourself?  If the answer to both of those questions is not 'yes', then you're setting yourself up.  It may never come to fruition, but that risk is too much to be taking these days.

or possible ezygo?

I don't have one (yet) but I've been looking at them for a while

I have one.  I migrated away from that because it's too limiting for me, and it started to stretch rather easily, just pulling the cards out of the wallet, and they got to the point where the resistance wasn't enough to keep them in (the EzGo minimalist).

I've purchased a few things recently, and figured I'd put them in one post.

First, I purchased a rather simple stand that I now have four of- it was so cheap and so useful and so easy to use, I had to buy a couple for my wife.

https://smile.amazon.../product/B072B6BG38/

The next two are semi-related:

I've been using a logitech headset for my meetings at work, and wanted something with better wireless and better fidelity, so I purchased a Sennheiser RS185: https://smile.amazon...p/product/B00TOT9G1W

It's great!  The most I've ever spent on headphones, but the $70 difference between the logitech when they first came out to the sennheiser really sold me on the fact that yes, audio gear gets better as you spend more.

But I needed a microphone.  I initially was trying to make it a headset, using the antlion modmic: https://smile.amazon.../product/B00R98JVVU/

It was ok, but annoying.  From finding the mute switch when in meetings, to adjusting the mic (it uses rare earth magnets to attach it to the base on the headphones- really cool idea, not so good in practice), and of course adhering to the headphones was touch and go.

So I decided to just go with a full microphone, and it was the best decision ever!

I purchased the Blue Yeti Blackout Edition: https://smile.amazon.../product/B00N1YPXW2/

People say it's like I'm in the room with them.  The little blinking light for the mute is always visible, and easy to cancel with just a button press.  It's great!  The only thing is having two audio devices, sometimes skype will reset to using the Blue Yeti as the default device for audio also.  But that's just a minor annoyance, and I think it's skype more than anything else.

Those two together are a bit more expensive than I ever thought I'd get to for a sound setup, but it's definitely made work meetings from home more bearable.

The last things were the Stand Steady standing desk surface- https://smile.amazon...p/product/B00BXOGHQI and the ErgoTech freedom arm- https://smile.amazon.../product/B008TYF0F4/

I've wanted to get a standing desk, but have resisted it.  I have a very good desk, and really didn't want to get another.  I thought of one of those ergodesk/vivodesk additions to the desktop that allow you to raise and lower, but still use your desk.  But they're pretty expensive too, and after trying it out, I'm not sure that it would work as well for me.

Then I thought, I have my laptop sitting there, and my desktop.  What if I made one a standing station, and the other my sitting station.  For a fraction of the price of even the ergodesk/vivodesk, I got an easy to use station, and the monitor raises and lowers on the laptop station, so I can bring it down easily- but honestly don't do it much; I just put the monitor in the highest position, and put my stand there next to it, and have pretty much left it that way.  I got a mat to go along with it (https://smile.amazon.../product/B01KJT547K/), and it really does seem to work to reduce stress, and I feel better, because sometimes I just want to stand up and stretch out the kinks.

I'm northern edge of central Florida, and the winds are already picking up quite a bit here with Irma still 200 miles south. Trees are creaking and cracking, and branches are already starting to fly.

I hope you make it through with minimal damage.  It seems that it's downgraded; hopefully it will continue that trend.

Query:  "goes below my windows task bar because i have three heights bar"

I cant understand what is happening here??
Does it occur with other shortcuts pinned to the Taskbar?
Did you use the shortcut created on the desktop during "Install" process, or create your own shortcut?

TWmailrec

My translation of this, especially after seeing his desktop in another thread, is that he's stretched his taskbar to be the height of 3 icons instead of one.  So if the app isn't on top of the task bar, and doesn't have space reserved for the new height of the taskbar, when dragged down, it would go behind.

I am writing down the words I don't understand to a txt file.
I would like from this list create a new list that include the meaning of each word of that list.

Can you attach one of your example lists?

The Expanse Series by James S. A. Corey.  Currently on Cibola Burn.

cibola_burn.jpg

Pretty good sci-fi.  Got involved after seeing the second season and then the first season on SyFy.  Very good grasp of physics, even in the inventions and liberties taken.

But got interrupted by the new Mitch Rapp book, Enemy of the State.

enemy_of_the_state.jpg

Kyle Mills seemed to reach his stride in the last book, so I've been looking forward to this more than the American Assassin movie.  That could be good- but I've already seen changes, so bracing myself for it not to be.

Wordpress does seem to be a target/recipient of attacks disproportionately, but i think having a single install, with minimal 3rd party extensions, which was kept always up to date, would be more secure than having a large number of different frameworks that were sporadically updated if ever..
Emphasis mine.

Either you figure out a way to always auto-update to the newest version, while not breaking anything... or you have to do this manually, figuring out if an update will break things, looking for CVEs to see if you have to zomgupdatenow or if you can keep it on a regular schedule. You'll also have to prevent users from installing just any plugins, since that's how mass-defacements usually happen.

If somebody wants Wordpress, I think they should be going for a managed solution at Wordpress rather than dealing with it themselves.

Thanks.  That was what I was saying.  And I had minimal plugins/themes.  And it's a pain.

But I only want to get notified if there is chance for rain!

You'd have to look into it.

There is an applet with the following description:

Tomorrow's forecast calls for

This Trigger monitors changes in tomorrow’s forecasted weather condition.

And the first one in the list is Rain.  But you'd have to see if it works for you.
