Find And Run Robot / Re: History Exception
« Last post by mouser on February 18, 2009, 11:12 AM »
currently the only thing you can do is uncheck them in the history, and they wont show up in the listing of recently run programs, but they will still move around in the history list (and fall off the end of the queue eventually).

but maybe this would be a good case where i could provide functionality to let plugins disable saving items to history, and let someone make a plugin to do the kind of thing you want.

Living Room / Tower Defense Flash Game of the Week: Ravine
« Last post by mouser on February 18, 2009, 06:02 AM »
Here's a very nicely animated cartoony tower defense game.  Missing some features i like to see in a TD game, but this has to be one of the best graphics seen in this type of game.

Haluz2 is nice though

haluz2 is *not* a sequal to samarost, but seems inspired by it.  from jay is games quote:

where did it come from? donations?

of course!

actually we were very lucky to have a very generous and kind donor on the site whose donation covered much of the expenses, so that made a huge difference.  but a big thank you is in order to everyone who has ever donated to the site, since they make these things possible.

General Software Discussion / Re: Clipboard program help/recommendations
« Last post by mouser on February 17, 2009, 04:46 PM »
Keep in mind this is a largely unused and undocumented feature in CHS, but here is how you would do it:
Create a new clip group, then edit it.
Then check the sql box and use text like this:
(ClipText LIKE '%fileforum%') OR (ClipText LIKE '%MediaMonkey%' )

You could add more conditions, like matching on the application name (table column name = Application).

And you might want to add the condition:
AND NOT (IsInRecyleBin)

to avoid matching items in the recycle bin.

---

As i said this is a not-very-supported feature which is annoying to use sometimes because when the sql is invalid it throws up a bunch of errors you have to click to ignore and then go back and re-edit.  But it does work.

the dock from the computer almost certainly was not overwritten.
unlike similar programs, LBC can switch between different user files that describe docks.
this affords a lot more flexibility, but it does lead to some real confusion sometimes when someone launches LBC and finds that their nodes have "dissapeared".

so i'd like to suggest that probably what happened is that your LBC opened one file when you expected it to open another.  you can browse to the .MCF file which is the extension used for node definition files.  Search for such files on your hard drive or usb to find them.

now to run LBC portably, create a file called ConfigDir.ini in your USB launchbar commander directory (i will start including this in future releases), and add the single line to that file from notepad or similar plain text editor:
CONFIGDIR=.

that will tell LBC when run from the usb drive to store all settings in that same directory, and is the way that all of my programs are configured to run portably.

let us know if you get it working and find your original .mcf file.  feel free to contact me directly if you need more help ([email protected])

another option would be to look for a dvd slideshow making program that can add captions on its own without modifying your pictures.

you could actually do this with my Clipboard Help and Spell by making virtual groups and using some custom sql.  not the most documented thing though.  you could probably do it with clipmate as well i'm guessing.

new version up.
20664
Don't remember if I asked this before or if it's posted, but is there an easy way to "report" topics to be included in the newsletter? Just to make editing it easier for you

great question.. i was thinking of hooking into the thread rating feature that i've recently added to help.. so that when making the newsletter i could see which threads were rated highly by people.

It's pretty amazing to see the cumulative output of a month's worth of DonationCoder.com.

Actually we are trying to get back into the 2-week intervals for newsletters.. makes it a bit less of a flood of information i think.

hawley, alt+#t should have worked fine whether the # was on numpad key or on top row of your keyboard.

you can also configure it to launch when you press a normal digit key the way you wanted and expected:

but it troubles me that the alt+# key didn't work for you.. so let me know if you still have troubles.

Newsletter for February 16th, 2009
Codename "Forum Valentines"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read our blog"
(new rss feed with images)

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings and welcome to another edition of the newsletter.  With only 28 days, February has always seemed like a bit of a rip-off to me compared to the other months.  Let's just try to make the best of it by keeping busy.  If you're feeling like you need a bit of balance after Valentine's Day, I posted a link to a free mp3 album by one of my very favorite Singer/Songwriters, Edith Frost.  And If you have a significant other maybe you can let us know in the forum if you exchanged some special gifts?  If not, and you're feeling like you need some cheering up, don't miss the silly humour thread for a few good laughs (see section 3 below).

If you have young kids, you should check out a pair of programs made by dc members recently, designed to let the young ones pound away on the keyboard and amuse themselves.  One is called "Crazy Little Fingers", and was coded for our recent NANY programming challenge, and another is called "Teddy" and was coded in the last week or two as a programming experiment.  Crazy Little Fingers shows pictures of animals and objects matching the keys pressed; "Teddy" plays different drumkit sounds for each key.  Both make it easy for you to customize using your own photos and sounds.

And for forum regulars, I've been hard at work in the last two weeks working on new forum features; see section 3 below for more details.

2. Your Participation Requested

No matter what your level of computer knowledge, or how long you've been a DC member, we'd love to have you participate on the forum.  See the links below for some good places to jump in and make your first post.

3. New Forum Features

I've been hard at work in the last two weeks working on new forum features that have been requested for quite some time.  You can now mark threads on the forum to ignore and rate topics as well as bookmark them.  A new award/badge system makes it fun to see who has participated in different activities.  And if you haven't placed your pin on the new member map yet, please do so (and if you are paranoid about big brother finding you just place it where you wished you could go on vacation).

4. General Software Discussion

It's probably fair to say that the majority of the discussions on DonationCoder.com are about computer software.  Below are some noteworthy threads about general software issues posted to DC since the last newsletter.

5. Specific Software Discussion

The previous section collected recent threads about general software issues.  This section collects thread about specific programs posted to the forum since the last newsletter:

6. DC Updates and Member Coding

In each newsletter we highlight some of the software coded by DC members that is available on Donationcoder.

7. Mini-Reviews by Members

We encourage forum members to post quick mini-reviews of software they discover.  Since the last newsletter we've had quite a few new ones.

8. Fun and Games

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out some of the lighter fare from the forum - humour, videos, and games..

9. Coding Snack Requests?

Coding snacks are treats for the software aficionado. If there's some tool that you've been looking for without success, you have nothing to lose by asking... Post a clear description of what you're wanting and one of Donationcoder's resident coding gurus might just take up the challenge.   Here are some of the notable requests being discussed currently.

10. Developer's Corner

If you're not a developer, don't be put off by the title of this section. There is likely something of interest to you on the Developer's Corner. It's more than just a forum for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial struggles, and general productivity issues.  And it's great to see that the section has been pretty active over the last few months -- keep it up people!

11. News You Can Use

DC Member Ehtyar has taken to producing wonderfully weekly summaries of important tech/computer/security news articles that he comes across on the web.  A big hit on the forum.  How is he able to keep up this pace and when will he collapse from exhaustion? We are all waiting to find out.

shouldnt this be 07-09 edition?
20672
definitely try the new version -- one reason this could theoretically happen is if sc was trying to show you a dialog to confirm saving changes to the current image but was minimized; this version will recognize the situation and pop itself up.  let me know what you find and try to make a note of what kind of capture you were doing when it happened, etc.

2.47.01 beta is up.
It's mainly improvements to the region capture modes.

ok thank you.. damn libcurl (the library i use in dcupdater) is not following the redirect the way it promises it will.. i may have to detect it manually and simulate the redirect myself if i can't get libcurl to work.  i'm not all that thrilled with libcurl.

Living Room / A free album of music from Edith Frost - one of my favorite singers
« Last post by mouser on February 15, 2009, 06:51 PM »
Edith Frost is a very special singer and songwriter.. It's hard for me to fight my tendencies to want to keep such discoveries secret and sacred.  This is music that I find deeply moving and rare and haunting and heartbreaking and thrilling.  The kind that makes you want to keep everyone on the planet from hearing it.

But it also seems fitting to share some sad music about love and romance on valentine's day, for those that need it.

Download the album of outtake songs here (see top left to download entire set as zip):

Note that these are sparser less polished versions of the full album songs, but it will give you a good feel for the music.
