I've moved to RightNote, and I'm sticking to it.
Is that because of your history of coming from KeyNote?  All the others were stopgaps on the way to "KeyNote done right?"  Does RightNote match (enough of) the features in your roundup of notetakers?
It's really just because it's very good.  I did evernote for a while, which was totally different than Keynote.  Rightnote is just, well, right!  The features that really did it for me were the paragraph styles, the horizontal line button.  It's one of the very very few programs (especially for notetakers) that I find intuitive.  Every little thing is just really great.  Like, you know how most of these programs make a big deal about being able to choose icons for your notes (in the tree)?  But then you try them, and you're like "Well, I don't really like these icons"  So then you try to add icons, if that feature is available.  but then, it's still not quite right.  So now you've spent a bunch of time messing around with icons until you get embarrassed and hope nobody ever notices that you just spent 2 hours of your life looking at icons while the world is in turmoil.  But in Rightnote, you open the icon window, and BOOM, tons of icons, anything you need!  So easy, so right.

eesh...yet another reminder to get my server project back into my todo list.  I have (so far) three 3TB drives sitting there, waiting to back up everything in multiply redundant fashion, as is typical of me. ;D

I love when I tell normal people that I have 12TB of hard drives...they almost get angry with me ;D, and their response is always along the lines of "Why do you need so much space?!"  :nono2: and I'm always left thinking "Why does this make you angry??"

Just FYI, years ago Mybase was one of my favorites for general notetaking.  Now, I've moved to RightNote, and I'm sticking to it.

If providers are going to be forced to "police" their customers content ... this could put a real dent in cloud services enthusiasm me thinks. As the (strangely head shaped) "ball" is obviously rolling.
Unless the cloud is owned by Apple...or Google.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Is CHS "Dropbox-friendly?"
« Last post by superboyac on February 04, 2012, 02:29 PM »
I've used Clipboard H+S off and an for years now, and have always been impressed by it.  The main reason I keep straying away from it is because I really need something that can let me easily access my clips whether at home or at work.   i.e. Is Dropbox-friendly.  If it was portable, I could (?) "install" it in my Dropbox folder, then it wouldn't know which computer I was on.  I would just need to make sure I didn't have both computer running at the same time.  I've been doing this successfully with the portable version of ClipMate.  Unfortunately, ClipMate seems like it might be abandonware now.  Plus I want to use CHS simply because I have a vested interest in DonationCoder.  (And CHS has a better quickpaste menu.)

The new Ethervane Echo seems to handle the dropbox issue pretty well.  I like CHS better though, because it handles pics (and for a couple other reasons; Though Echo is awesome in it's own right).

I'm surprised that searching the CHS board for "dropbox" yields zero results.  Surly I'm not the first person to think of this.

Extra notes: I know I can export when shutting down, then import when I start the other computer, but I don't really  consider this a viable option (I"m just too darn lazy!)  Also, having a list of friends on a network and network passwords, etc etc like Ditto is overkill IMHO.  It would be okay if it could monitor for any changes in the database, but mostly I just need the portable bit.

Thoughts?  Comments?  Thanks.
I've been trying to figure out a good solution for this sort of thing as well.  I haven't found anything yet.  There are a lot of complicating factors.

Ideally, when you update a file (say the CHS data file) and you are using it in portable mode away from your home computer, how can the update be made seamlessly?  The problem is you also have CHS running at home, so when you update the portable file, how does everything stay in sync.  So, the easy way is to update the portable file (probably on USB stick or dropbox), but then how are those updates ADDED to the existing CHS file at home?  perhaps you use to files, an away file and a home file...but ideally, you want one file with everything in it.  This is true for a lot of portable programs I use.

I've tried doing a variety of things...dropbox, super flexible file synchronizer with ftp to monitor in real-time changes in files and send them via ftp to update at home...but none of the solutions are seamless.  The most difficult part is updating remote files in realtime.

If I'm in a remote location and use a portable file called mydata.chs, how can the mydata.chs file that's at home get updated also?  And will the program recognize the update, or will I have to shutdown/restart the program to see the changes.  And is it dangerous to make changes like that to a program that already has the file open?

If anyone can find a good answer to this problem, it would be an amazing thing.  And if you can do it without cloud services like dropbox, now we're really talking.

Is there a tool available to monitor ALL incoming/outgoing connections to a computer (maybe even keeping a log)?  I know of programs like NetLimiter and firewalls tend to display connections.  But they are all so complicated and hard to really understand on a connection-to-connection basis what is happening.

I would like to be able to read something like this:
[ip address] [outgoing or incoming] connected using [service/file/protocol]

I don't really understand all the ways connections are made, so I don't really know what to ask for.  I do know that bytes need to be sent back and forth, but a lot of things I see on my computer use svchost.exe and I don't really know what to make of that.  Basically, I just want to know if things I don't want to happen are happening.

Ever since setting up my ftp server, I've noticed it being hammered constantly by China.

screenshot captor is the best all around tool in the genre.  Snagit is more powerful, but what I've learned over the years that for 99% of my screen capturing needs, it's far easier to do it with SC.  And that's before you realize it's free.  So, best bang for the buck --> screenshot captor.

I hope I haven't posted this already.  But I found the excerpt below from Gene Harris' biography (written by his widow), so I feel compelled.  Gene is my primary influence in piano, his music is wonderful.  Following the excerpt below is one of the songs from the concert described (two parts):

In reality, I don't think Gene and I viewed Otter Crest as a turning point in his life until a few months later when a videotape of his performance, sent by a member of the Jazz Society of Oregon sound crew, arrived in the mail. At the time, neither Gene nor I had any idea that the concert had been taped. I was surprised and excited and wanted to watch the tape immediately, the gene was strangely hesitant. "What?" I said. "What are you talking about? I was there; you have got to see this. You're not going to believe it. First of all, you're not going to believe the way you played, and second of all, you're not going to believe the joy written all over your face, John's face, Jimmy's face, the audience screaming and yelling. You could put your hands in the air and feel the energy and the love. There aren't words to describe what you guys did."

He seemed almost embarrassed at the prospect of watching himself on tape, which I didn't understand. "Haven't you ever seen yourself perform?" I asked.

"Never," he said. "Not once, and I'm not sure I'm ready now."

"Well, it's about time," I said, taking the tape and putting it in our video recorder and then getting him a beer. As Gene sat and watched he became transfixed. Like so many others who had enjoyed his music over the past 30+ years, he was alternately laughing, shaking his head, and fighting back the tears throughout the two-hour recording. When it ended, he just sat there for a minute, as if not believing what he had just witnessed. "My God," he finally said, "now I know why people are the way they are after I finish playing. I never really understood."

"Didn't you ever listen to your recordings?" I asked.

"No, not very often," he replied, as if suddenly realizing the impact his music had on others. "I...never...knew..."

I think it was then--in watching the Otter Crest crowd's wild and spontaneous reaction and the way Smith and Heard fed off of his playing--that Gene realized that he needed to share his talent with a larger audience and seek the widespread recognition that had eluded him for so long.

I totally agree!  I just wasn't expecting it to be so "slick/professional" in the short amount of time after I asked if it was available.

Okay, now is my face is red! The PDF is just a click of a button in Help and Manual, really :)

Meanwhile, a new release is coming with some more requests implemented around the clip editor. Among other things, Echo can now keep capturing clips when the editor dialog is open. And the editor now has a "Save as a new clip" button, which does just that.

shhh!!  Don't give away your secrets!  It's all voodoo and wizardry to us.

^ And slavery, and poverty, and polio, and hunger, along with sanity, and legal process, and a host of other things. Strange place my country. It's neither as bad, nor as good as its more extreme detractors, and supporters, like to think it is.

That's the problem with a government as fluid as the one the US has. I gets replaced every 4 to 6 years so it doesnt have much in the way of long-term memory. And it's easily manipulated by well organized special interest groups as a result.

What I find amusing is how the US gets blamed by citizens of other countries when their governments go along with US inspired nonsense - much like the US used to blame something called "the communists" for everything that was wrong with the world. Unfortunately, the Soviet Union collapsed and deprived us of our favorite scapegoat. I wonder who other countries will decide to blame next after the collapse of the current USA sometime towards the end of this century?

Living Room / US Government questions
« Last post by superboyac on January 31, 2012, 03:24 PM »
OK, I'm starting to research this with more seriousness than I gave it in elementary school.

First Question:
What is the difference between the Cabinet members and "Cabinet-level" officers?
Wikipedia doesn't say:
http://en.wikipedia....nited_States_Cabinet

(I know 40hz is all over this!)

One of the things I want to do is create a detailed hierarchy of the US Government in TreeSheets.  I'm going to have it here to download so others can benefit from it also.  I want to eventually fill it in with as much information that would be useful for normal folk like us.  And I want to make it very easy for people to know how to contact the right people if there is an issue you are concerned about.  My entire life, I have not had a single contact with the people supposedly representing me, and I imagine it's the same with most people.  The SOPA thing proved to me that one of the few things that normal people can do to them is nag them.  They need to FEEL who they are supposed to represent, and they need to FEEL it without feeling it in their wallet.

Nice find 40!!  yes, that is exactly the thing we want to have.  If that ever comes out, I will do my best to support that business.  We need more of these.  Whoever has the talent and the willpower needs to start creating product on their own.  No more relying on the big boys to support us.  They are NOT supporting us, they are wasting our time, our energy, our precious few moments here in this life.  We're working like dogs for no good reason...our lives and the lives of those around us is not ebing improved by our own actions.  It is improving the lives of those who don't know, don't care about, and frankly those who don't care about us.  We need to do more things that help those around us, or things that people around us want or need.  And let it grow from there.  We can't wait for the others to give us our share...it ain't coming.

Clipboard Help+Spell / CHS capturing inconsistencies?
« Last post by superboyac on January 31, 2012, 01:07 PM »
So I've been dedicating myself to using CHS as my primary clipboard manager for the past several months.  Unfortunately for mouser, this means I'm going to have more nitpicks!  ;D

--I'm doing a lot of copying and pasting from pdf's to notetakers.  Very very often, I'll copy something from the pdf and it doesn't show up in CHS at all.  But it shows up in Ethervan Echo, no problem.  I also get that clipboard chain error frequently, but whether I get that error or not, it doesn't seem to affect if the clip appears in CHS.  Sometimes the clip appears with the error, sometimes the clip doesn't appear and you still get the error.  Some pdf's work better than others, but Echo has no problem with either of them.

--Let's say the clip is now in CHS.  I need to tweak the clip before pasting it, so I use the fancy modify/format features and do my thing, or I manually edit stuff.  Then I go to the notetaker and paste it, but it pastes the OLD version of the clip.  It doesn't seem to save the changes in real time.  I have to go into CHS, change the selected clip to something else, and that seems to save the modified version of the clip for pasting.

--The column widths are very rigid.  Could I suggest a horizontal scroll bar or something?  The way it is now, it demands that all the columns are fully fitted inside the total width available.  But what I want is pretty wide columns that show most of everything (without any ...), but I can't do that because the columns are so inflexible.  I can remove columns to make more room, but I don't want to.  I want a lot of columns, very wide columns, and I don't mind if they don't fit and just go off to the side, and scrolling is necessary.

--selected item appearance.  I know you added all the appearance tweaks (thanks!) but you didn't add the selected item appearance tweaks which was really what prompted me to suggest it in the first place.  And what I really mean is the selected cell, not just the row (that one you've added).  The selected cell looks the same as the rest of the grid, which is very awkward (to me).  If anything, I'd rather it be the same as the rest of the selected row, or another color...basically, anything BUT the same as the unselected cells.

That's no big deal, then.  If they make some tablets without a desktop to compete with the ipads and androids, that's fine.  But they're going to make tablets with both metro and desktop, or desktop only also.  So...I don't see any problem with that from our standpoint.  If someone doesn't want the restrictions of metro-only, they can get a more full-featured Windows 8 tablet.

I was under the impression that tablets were going to be ARM based and that the Windows mode was only going to be available on PCs or Intel based tablets (if they ever make it to the general public). Given what MS are trying to do in the tablet market place (ie. lock it down and screw as much money as Apple out its users) I can see them being keen on ARM based tablets and a locked in marketplace!
Hmm...that's disturbing news.  Well, I'm dying for a Windows 8 tablet that has a full desktop.  If the Windows tablets are as locked down as described, I don't see why anyone would use it over Android or iOS.  Or, to be more clear, I don't see any distinguishing features.  If you don't open up the file/folder system...it's just an appliance.  I mean, geez, somebody has to make a tablet that can do business stuff.  We've been using tablets in our company now for a while, and we are continually running into limitations to the point where we just carry the things around now to browse the internet during meetings.  Maybe a little email or messaging is convenient.  But at some point, businesses are going to need that Blackberry power combined with Windows desktop power, or else they'll just stick to their laptops.  Windows 8 will fail big time if they don't put a desktop on the tablet.

File/folder access is THE distinguishing feature of Windows vs. Android/iOS.

Except from what I have seen of Metro it doesn't look as though you will have any more file access than iOS - I may be wrong but it does seem to use the same per-app locked in structure.
No way, I don't believe it.  The Metro is just a gui layer for the touch stuff.  A developer was in the cubicle next to mine a few weeks ago and he was testing out Windows 8 on a tablet.  And you can switch from the Metro mode to a full Windows desktop mode that looked pretty much like Windows 7.  Windows won't be Windows if you take away the file/folder access (i.e. Windows explorer....there's no way!).  I mean, if they do, I'm done with Windows and so will a ton of other people.  It will be Linux time at that point for sure.

followup...
I have now tried every tablet on the market.  They all stink, big time.  But the ipad STILL has the best combination of responsiveness and screen quality, which is really the two biggies of tablet features.  All of the Androids are awful compared to it.  You can do a little more "poweruser" things with the Androids compared to a (jailbroken) ipad, but not as much as people think.  I prefer the ipad right now.

But I'm really hoping a Windows 8 tablet comes out with (very key!) a build quality and responsiveness at least close to the ipad.  I'm not going to want to use it if there are frustrating delays with swipes and touches.  I have no doubt the productivity of the Windows tablet will far surpass any of the androids or ipads...no doubt whatsoever.  Doesn't mean the applications will be easy to use on the tablet, but at least you'll be able to "do" the things you need to get done.  File/folder access is THE distinguishing feature of Windows vs. Android/iOS.

I'll always prefer my computing environment to be a little funky looking. Part of that comes from building my own (either out of necessity or for the pure joy of it) as often as possible. To me, there are few things more intellectually gratifying than sitting it the presence (or middle  mrgreen) of some incredibly complex dogpile of technology - and realize you understand it all its complexity!
Me too!  I keep telling people, the personal computer is probably the most complex, advanced piece of equipment most people will ever use.  As such, you can't expect it to be as powerful as it is AND be super simple to use.  You have to choose.  That's why I get annoyed when Apple users bitch about how hard pc's are to use...they want all the power, but they want it done with a single button.  And if you try to explain that, they throw a little bit of 'tude at you.  Of course, we pc apologists do the same also.

But yeah, I've recently accepted that fact...I can't expect the fancy devices to satisfy my needs.  I'm always going to need to hack it in some way (even just mentally, as you say).  So I've accepted that the things I like will always make my room/house/car/whatever look like something out of Doc's garage in back to the future.  Can't help it anymore.
