It seems foolish to me, (a little odd too), that Hearn proclaimed the demise of bitcoin in his article.
In ways, it allows people to respond by simply saying -- but look, it's not dead -- without directly addressing his complaints.

General Software Discussion / Re: Use a flash drive as memory in Windows XP?
« Last post by tomos on January 22, 2016, 03:51 AM »
As mwb says: this about the paging file.
The paging file is a file on your HD that gets used when memory is low -- it is slow (much slower than RAM) and will be even slower if on a usb stick.
The only advantage would be if you were very short of space, removing the paging file from the C drive would free up a little space.

My Gateway TA6 laptop (freebie with no documentation/paperwork) is already maxed out with 2GB ram, and I have a spare 2GB thumb drive to experiment with, and I wonder if there is a way to combine and get 4GB usable ram?
no,
that's not possible.

If you want to speed up the machine, you could try installing some version of Linux OS. I did that (dc link) on an old Win. 2000 laptop (with just 128MB ram!) and it worked quite well -- but you would need to get advice about it.

^ wanted to say how good the SC scanning solution is
Most scanning software I've come across is a nightmare. SC on the other hand has all the important stuff there easy to access, and it works a treat, including multi-page PDF creation.

Oops, there was one minor thing: on scanning, it inverts the colours.
I've checked SC options, also the scanner default settings, and dont see anything there. I normally use Vuescan for high-quality scanning -- that does not invert colours either.
So it seems to be an SC thing -- anyone else with that problem?

I also disable OS upgrades (not Windows Update).
hi Carol,
anyone know how ^this^ is done?

On this machine I only see 'Windows Update' (no relevant settings), and 'Windows anytime Upgrade' (which has no settings at all).
Note: on this and on my other Windows 7 machine I'm not getting any update to windows 10 messages, (possibly because I mostly only ever install security updates).

I royally dread advance purchase agreements like that, especially compulsory ones, and most especially surprise compulsory ones. NEXT time, I will know what to expect, and I don't think I will be purchasing McAfee no matter how nice their product is. I do not like that kind of sales approach.

Yeah, ironically, you need to be even more careful of the big names, than of the smaller ones...

I think I'm gonna need to buy some potions

P-o-o-o-o-tions for sale!
P-o-o-o-o-tions for sale!
P-o-o-o-o-tions for sale!

...
then again,
can you give a reference?

EDIT/Oups, sorry :P got my wires crossed -- of course you dont need any references when buying potions ;-)

is it easy to change the hotkey combination?

what do you want to change it to?

Screenshot - 2016-01-15 , 00_21_46.png

^This^ is the bit you need to change -- I always forget (I *think Ctrl='^'), and need to look up the AHK site.
I know from the screenshot that:
# = Winkey
and that's it....

so,
only half a solution -- or maybe just a quarter ;-)

My AV (Symantec) just gave a warning about it containing OpenCandy, but that's relatively harmless. I tried the ImgBurn provided mirror, btw, maybe other mirrors trigger the warning based on their hostname?
Thanks. After I install ImgBurn, I'll just run Malwarebytes and a few other anti-pup scans to do a general pup cleanup.

when installing, just be careful:
read each dialog window carefully, make sure to avoid installing any additional toolbars or software (sometimes it can be done/phrased sneakily). Generally, that's enough (with opencandy at any rate).

Tried again (update now) and it went to Windows Update and offered 10 -- is now updating

well, that didnt work in the end. I tried again today with download and update later and now have Windows 10 running (yah!)
It's only just installed, so cant say a lot, but:

# I didnt see any option given during install to delete files -- it kept (almost) all software but seems to have removed some user data:
PaleMoon bookmarks are gone, but History is still there

# OS build is 10586.63

# I cant AltTab to the desktop :(

# I think it looks great

[edit] I'm pretty sure Windows said I would need to download a new language pack (it was originally a German lang. Win.8 that I had changed to English). But it remained in Englsih  [/edit]

On second thought, I think I needed to install some .NET updates from Windows update before the GWX updater would work for me without just closing immediately. But this was on a fresh Windows 7 install. I'd expect Windows 8.1 to have most of the more recent .NET packages/updates.

Does it for me on one of my Windows 8.1 Pro machines.  This machine I previously upgraded to 10 Pro but then found that a USB TV Tuner didn't work, so restored an image of the drive.

Now that I have a solution for the hardware I told it a few times to Start Download, Upgrade Later but all it ever does is go to Windows Update and grab the latest Defender definitions - no sign of it downloading the upgrade at all.

I'll probably have to upgrade it via ISO.

I didnt check what NET is installled, but threw everything windows update had to offer at it (except the malicious tool :p).
Tried again (update now) and it went to Windows Update and offered 10 -- is now updating

« Last post by tomos on January 11, 2016, 03:16 PM »
I'll update, but this issue has persisted for me for several versions/years (different hardware too), I just put up with it. Not blurry images, they are just enlarged slightly when pasted into another app.

ah, I thought you meant pasting within SC (reading too quick again). But, update anyways (there's not much point in making a bug report with an older version...)

What you're talking about is going to be dependent on what you're pasting into. I believe this was discussed a while back...
