Actually, if companies really want to get a user base of enthusiastic evangelists, they'd probably do best to offer discounts through established, well-respected software discussion sites - of which DC is the prime example...

There has been a generous 30% off discount on Notezilla available here on DC for a very long time. It's just that this BDJ one is a little better.

But if you miss it, you can still take advantage of the one offered to DC members.

(Thanks conceptworld!)

Every time I see this ad on facebook I instinctively want to click Like.

Then have to remind myself it has absolutely nothing to do with this app.  :-[

Hmmm, in case of a problem, which crapcleaner do you use?

Maybe I should get to work writing a "registry cleaner and deodorizer"?

Or a double disinfectant...combo anti-virus and germ killer?

Notezilla is a fantastic application, worth every penny. I have never regretted moving from 3M's Post-it Digital notes to Notezilla. I am even running Notezilla under WINE in Ubuntu. It works quite well, as long as you don't have anything else running in WINE that needs you to install IE. (There is a serious lack of decent sticky notes apps for Linux)

Perhaps, with a bit of persuasion, I can use his bath to provide water cooling for the pc.

Build it in his toilet tank and he might not even notice it's there.  :P

Maybe this might be of some help: http://www.silentpcr...ommended_Hard_Drives

They have a list of the quietest drives in 2.5, 3.5, and at various speeds. Also some recommendations for other stuff for reducing drive noise.

Seems they recommend 2.5" notebook drives for desktop systems, if you really want to reduce noise without using SSD. Seems the smaller size makes them much quieter. Might be something to that. I have a USB WD Passport drive (500G), and I never hear it. I would have to literally stick my ear against it to hear any sound coming from it.
2057
If you really want to eliminate hard drive noise, then go for the most reliable SSD you can get (read all the reviews and pick the best drive you can find), since they are all silent, no vibrations, and run cool, so they won't need any additional noisy fans near them.

But I wouldn't waste the noisy Samsung drive you already have. I'd stick that in an enclosure and use it for backup storage purposes, running it only when needed.

(with a thousand apologies to Neil Diamond...)

Awesome!  ;D

Some people can pick up sounds that others can't, and sometimes those sounds can drive a person insane. It could be that you are very sensitive to that particular sound frequency. Kind of like a "Nudone dog whistle", perhaps.

Oh, I know quite well about this...I have a PC that makes a high pitched squealing sound that makes me want to rip my hair out. It's either the CPU fan or the PSU that's doing it, and I can't replace either of them because the machine is too old to consider investing a dime in it. It's constant, and the only thing I can do about it is blast music to mask it. Being a night person really made life difficult when I couldn't mask that sound at night.  :'(

And only two other people I know could hear that sound. One of them was one of my daughter's friends that was living with us for awhile, and not until I made her listen very carefully for it. Then she wanted to kill me because life was bliss for her when she couldn't hear it, and once I pointed it out she couldn't stop hearing it. She moved out a week later.

My daughter could hear it when she was about 12 and she said it was bad enough that she could hear it on the other end of the house, through a closed door. Back then I must have been immune to it because I thought she was the crazy one. I think right about the time she became immune to it, must have been when I started hearing it.  :o

Living Room / Re: Film vs. Movie?
« Last post by app103 on August 10, 2011, 12:48 PM »
Expanding a little on what Renegade said....

Today, seeing a film also more or less dictates where you are viewing it.

If you are viewing it at home, it is unlikely to be a film unless you own projection equipment and have access to the reels. If it is on a television or a PC screen, it is NOT a film.

To view a film today, one has to

  • travel to a theater
  • wait in line to buy a ticket where the price is per person
  • wait in line to buy over-priced unhealthy snacks of a very limited selection
  • wait in line to use a dirty bathroom
  • sit in an uncomfortable seat
  • deal with a very limited amount of leg room
  • deal with people's heads in the way
  • deal with rude people talking, cell phones ringing, kids crying, etc.
  • you will need a crowbar to pry your feet off the floor before you leave

I think I'll stick to movies at home...

  • it's cheaper (costs the same amount for just me or the entire family)
  • a lot less waiting in lines
  • the food is better, healthier, and cheaper
  • the bathroom is clean
  • my seats are comfortable
  • I can stretch my legs out and put my feet up
  • I can take off my shoes
  • I won't need a crowbar
  • And if anyone makes noise, I can throw them out (hmm...maybe I will still need that crowbar after all)

Developer's Corner / Re: Lost Programming Skills

I don't know if it's the case with coders, but in my world of network technology, I'm already starting to see a problem. Many of the next-gen engineers I see coming out are great at dealing with all the latest and greatest tech. They can make the newest Cisco boxes sing like a diva. And they definitely know a lot more about them than I do.

But if you put them in a mixed environment with a lot of legacy equipment (i.e about 85% of the environments out there) they have problems. I suspect it's because the bulk of their training was on specific devices and products rather than core technologies. As a result, their knowledge is miles deep - but only a few yards wide. Show them something they've never worked with that's being balky, and their most common response is to suggest getting something "more up to date with the current state of the technology." Forget that a simple tweak to the setup - or replacing a suspect CAT-5 cable-  would fix the problem in a jiffy.

Well, there has to be some way the old timers to have job security. It's like all those COBOL coders from the 70's that wrote so much code that works fairly well, on old hardware that will likely out live anything built today, that they guaranteed they would be able to find some sort of COBOL related job if they want one, far longer than their minds will last. If they ever come up short on retirement cash and need some work to supplement things, they will have no problem getting it.

But of course there are some of those old COBOL coders (like my dad) that would rather sell their house and rent a room than ever touch that stuff again.  :D

Finished Programs / Re: SOLVED: Dropbox "Desktop"
« Last post by app103 on August 08, 2011, 04:19 AM »
I have an app I made a long time ago called Clutterbuster that could work for this. But it only works with exe files and if the exe file doesn't contain an icon, the button will be blank.

Place it at the root of your Dropbox folder. Set it up by right clicking a button and selecting an exe file to associate with it. Once you have set all the buttons you desire, close the app and it will save the settings in an ini file. Open that ini file in Notepad and edit the paths to be relative.

It will hold a total of 100 apps, but you can use multiple copies if you need more. Just name it something different (ex: Clutterbuster1.exe, Clutterbuster2.exe, etc. or Web Apps.exe, System Utilities.exe, etc.) Each copy will create its own ini file.

Keep in mind that this is no longer being actively developed by me. It is given as-is. If it works for you, great...if it doesn't, delete it and forget I suggested it.

I originally whipped this up to shut my daughter up when we shared a PC with a single user account and she started complaining about all my apps she wasn't interested in cluttering up the taskbar. It was created without writing a single line of code. If you want the Delphi "source" PM me.   :D

Living Room / European security group issues warning on HTML5
« Last post by app103 on August 06, 2011, 02:42 AM »
ENISA look at 13 specifications within HTML5 and found 51 security issues. Some of the issues can be fixed by tweaking the specifications, while others are more risks based on the features that users should be alerted to, Hogben said. One of the features that concerns ENISA in the paper is termed "form tampering."

The HTML5 specification allows for the "submit" button for a Web-based form to be placed anywhere on a Web page. It means it would be possible for an attacker to inject other HTML onto the page, such as a different form button, and then cause the information in the form to be sent to the attacker rather than the legitimate website.

Living Room / Re: Recommend some music videos to me!
« Last post by app103 on August 05, 2011, 04:30 AM »
Back in the early to mid 90's my father and I decided to get to know each other a lot better. One of the things we have in common is our passion for music, even though our tastes were completely different. He has been a lifelong lover of jazz and I was into progressive rock. So we made and swapped mix tapes containing all of our favorite music. On one of the tapes he made for me were a number of Oscar Brown Jr tracks, some of which were quite amusing.

And this is one I had not heard till yesterday:

This one is really sweet. If you have kids, you'll probably love it.

These are some old apps...

Claris Easy Business Cards - The best software Apple ever released for Windows.
Copernic - Until Google came along, it was THE way to search the web.
Nuts & Bolts - The best defragger, ever.

Wouldn't it be ironic if, after careful consideration, it ended up being implemented using Drupal?  :P

(Sorry Mouser... lame joke. Couldn't resist. ;)  ;D)

No, it wouldn't be. Mouser has a love/hate masochistic relationship with Drupal.

Irony would be if it ended up on Wordpress.  :P
2071
kyrathaba, there may have been a slight misunderstanding. This thread was related to a software directory on the main DC site, not any proposed changes to member pages.

The idea was something PAD driven so that developers could have control over their listings and easily be able to keep them up to date, without having to actually access the CMS, no matter where they were hosting their files. It would be much the same way as most of the download sites work, but instead of filling it with software from everywhere on the web, it would be limited to software from the DC community.

I haven't tried it out yet but it seemed it might be a good freeware substitute for Extensis Portfolio for cataloging media files, especially images.

I do plan on trying it out since Extensis Portfolio is quite expensive and out of reach for most people. If it makes a good substitute for handling a large image collection, I'll probably start recommending it.
2073
Well, mouser doesn't want me to do it. He thinks it would be better to move the whole site to a CMS, and while I may be asked for my opinion on some things, I probably won't be involved in the actual work of doing it.

Living Room / Re: Teflon pressing sheet as mouse pad
« Last post by app103 on August 02, 2011, 11:01 PM »
so when I use my left hand it works just fine on the table surface.

You really shouldn't do that unless you don't mind damaging your table.

The use of a mousepad is not merely to provide a surface suitable for a mouse, but also to prevent damage to your desk. I found this out the hard way. Sitting under my mousepad is a very worn area of my desk, whose finish was ruined by my using the mouse directly on it.  :(

I did something similar once, but I used an entire table top ironing board with teflon cover as my keyboard/mouse tray, over an open drawer of a 2-drawer file cabinet.

Pict0001resize.jpg

Was an awesome comfortable padded surface that worked quite well.
