fSekrit / Re: Symantec False positive...
« Last post by Ath on July 30, 2012, 12:07 PM »
False positives should be reported to the manufacturer of the AV package, Symantec's false positive page in this case. That's the most reliable way to remove this anomaly from their package.
All assuming you have checked your files not to be contaminated, ofcourse, an on-line scanning service like Jotti's is a good way to have your files checked independently if unsure.

Site/Forum Features / Re: About the Basement (Soap Box) Section
« Last post by Ath on July 26, 2012, 04:23 AM »
If you filter out the soap-box forum from the 'unread' page, shouldn't these messages also be filtered from the 'recent posts' summary at the bottom of the forum home-page?
 (see attachment in previous post)

Adding to my previous note, I now see that the last message posted ("Latest Post") does display the message in the Basement section, even now that these are no longer visible in the "Recent Posts" section. Maybe it should be filtered from there too?

General Software Discussion / Re: Customize Snap DB?

Upon more thinking another option is to go with one Word doc per part number, and all the PN docs in one folder.
Then Data Crow or any other database management tool (even MS Access :-\) is definitely a better solution!

If I can throw in a suggestion: Have a look at Data Crow, that's for keeping 'collections' with a lot of bells and whistles, but would be a fine candidate here, imho.

should it make any difference on a 64-bits Win 7 if PlayTime is placed in Program Files or in Program Files (x86) ?
Nope, it's just a location, PF/PFx86 has no extra special meaning, other than being more protected from modification by access rights, so you can't (shouldn't) store user-stuff there.

Changing the default printer can be done using rundll32 like this:
Code: Text [Select]
  1. rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /y /q /n "Printer name"

Some more info on PrintUI can be found here

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Pledge & Final Release: Tell When Done
« Last post by Ath on July 11, 2012, 05:22 AM »
Yes, the checksum is for the exe, as the values are also in the hash.txt file in the zip file, for anytime reference by the user.

I will mention so on the website, to clear any misunderstanding in future.

Regards,

Anand

It would be more helpful to (also) publish the md5/sha hashes for the zipfile, as I'd be (theoretically) able to replace the exe, update the txt file with new hashes and publish a new zip-file...

unless I can continue using the 32-bit version of Delphi.
32 bit software, as most IDE's are, runs just nicely on 64 bit Windows, I've been doing it ever since the release of Vista x64, ~6 years ago 8)
Development for x64 requires either special compilers and project settings, or a complete x64 environment, depending on the tools used. Delphi for x64 is just an optional part (compiler/linker only) of the Delphi XE2 suite (depending on the level of the suite), and AFAICS the IDE itself is still 32 bit (just like Visual Studio 2008/2010).

General Software Discussion / Re: In search of ... win7 startup problem solvers
« Last post by Ath on July 08, 2012, 11:50 AM »
Can you somehow delay the start of the service, by using a tool for that (never used/searched for 'm but they've been mentioned here, AFAIK), could be something else dependent that's slow to start, blocking a proper start of Apache.

OTOH, could be an issue with Apache 2.2, can't you upgrade to the vastly improved 2.4 version (httpd) ?

Is 192.168.1.130 the actual, connected, IP of your system, or is it an IP of a virtual networkadapter of one of the virtualization solutions, like VMWare or VirtualBox, that'll take a few seconds longer to start?
You could try port 8081 or 8090, if both 80 and 8080 are (temporarily) occupied by other applications, or your AV package could block binding of the port during startup.

General Software Discussion / Re: Visual Basic or Visual C++
« Last post by Ath on July 07, 2012, 04:19 AM »
Java, using the Eclipse or Netbeans IDE, could be a feasible alternative to any of the suggestions, but you can't (easily) create a single-exe application from that, also requires the installation of a runtime environment, and selection of a GUI library/technique where .NET comes with 2 built in (WinForms and WPF) (both support web).

Would love to see that backed up with any real statistics...
Something like this ohloh graph ?

It shows that Java is quite dominant in what they measured, but MS/VS doesn't have a Java-language any longer (though C# is close in some areas). It also shows that C# is quite a bit more used than VB or C++.

None of those 2, choose Visual C#

You won't be able to create proper single-exe programs with VS without installing a runtime-part anyway, and most modern computers (should) have the .NET runtime installed anyway, so select the language that the majority of Visual Studio programmers is using: C#

Living Room / Re: Noisy PSU advice
« Last post by Ath on July 03, 2012, 01:28 AM »
Sure it's the PSU fan? usually a system like that has a CPU-fan and a case-fan as well, so those could be the culprits too. You'll have to investigate by turning on the power while the case is open and you're watching/listening closely what's happening where.
