The really interesting part of this exercise (for me, and quite apart from the learning experience) has been the realisation that the development process is really about the details - getting a rough working solution is relatively easy (!!) but it's all the little things that take the time (both to implement and to troubleshoot)

absolutely true.

share it!!

maybe it shouldnt start searching until at least 4 or 5 characters are typed -- would that speed it up?

Find And Run Robot / Re: how does setuservar work ? [feature request ?]
« Last post by mouser on March 27, 2009, 01:27 PM »
the bug that ewe found would affect setting user var from an alias.  in fact you'll notice that he basically simulated in his plugin call the effect of specifying something in an alias launch command.  after the next update you will be able to specify in your alias result: setuservar section.varname=value

your other idea about commandline invocation is reasonable.  i'll add ability to invoke var with a command to launch (which would also let you use above functionality to set user vars), and ask farr to display some results.

yeah it would really be nice if someone wrote a farr plugin that would interface with some of the desktop search tools that index file content (google desktop search, etc.)

Perhaps what we could do is have the forum software more clearly note when someone is about to reply to and revive a very old thread, making clear that they should only do so if they have something to contribute.

We need to start keeping track of when a skrommel app or a conding snack utility is mentioned on the web.  Your help is requested!

That way we can add them to the new Quotes page, and keep it updated.

Haven't tried it but I must say it's a nicely done website.

Nudone,

I might not disagree with the main point you are trying to make.. but i think one could also argue it in this way:

There is no magic "system" that is going to fix you and make you more organized.  Your problems may have deeper causes.
And maybe there is nothing that much better about one system over another.
But it's possible that in a search and exploration of new systems you might discover some deeper issues or leave yourself open to learning something about yourself that helps.

At least that's a more positive take on the search for an organizational system that suits you.

FlipSuite and Flipbook Printer / Re: skip frames
« Last post by mouser on March 26, 2009, 02:26 PM »
no you can't move around the order of frames.
one thing that will probably be added in the future is the ability to use a directory full of still images -- when i do that i can add an option to show them in random order.

just set the # of frames to print as half of the number of frames in the movie and it will do what you want:

The Form Letter Machine / Re: Links to Reviews and Comments - Add yours!
« Last post by mouser on March 25, 2009, 06:06 PM »
it's a good idea.. i should say that tflm was actually designed with this use in mind.. it has commandline support for working with plugins and other tools.

as a demonstration, jibz wrote a plugin for thebat email client called Piper which does exactly this -- it actually called the form letter machine, populates it with info from the current email being replied to, and pastes the result into your email.  it's EXTREMELY useful.

it would be very very easy for someone to create such a plugin for other email clients like outlook, etc. if someone wanted to.  in fact it might be possible to do it already if the email client (or a plugin for it) supports running a commandline tool and capturing the output.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR plugin: FARR Remember The Milk 0.4.5
« Last post by mouser on March 25, 2009, 12:24 PM »
I think there is no more need for testing.
After phitsc and I talked, Ewemoa and I looked at the code and I've talked to ecaradec and believe that the bug has been identified specifically.. just waiting for a new version of fscript to fix it. Good teamwork involved in tracking this down.

I think the exception error is a conflict with fscript plugins.. if you uninstall the other plugins you have installed, does the rtm crash go away?

So we might not make the secondary goal of $12,000 but we just might make a $10,000 goal which would be FANTASTIC!!
