On a very few occasions I did enter the store to find out about a tool. But that was when I still had a Windows 8.1 phone. For Windows on my computers I never saw the need to enter the MS Store. Never spent any money in there, that is certain.

Instead of continuously trying to find more and better ways of pushing the multitasking/information overload envelope, people really should just slow down a bit and breath. Otherwise we're just going to end up being a society full of heavily medicated 30 something burnouts.

Yeah, they actually look pretty normal for a - that type of - permissions issue. but the change owner link should have let you (as an admin) set it to whatever you wanted/needed.

Thinking on it from tge perspective of a developer, what is the one thing you can do to always give an access is denied message- put a lock on a file.  Then no one can change the file unless you remove the locks, and I didn't think to check that.

It's nice that these security programs are trying to protect us, but it's absolutely unacceptable for these programs not to be designed with the assumption that they are going to make false positive mistakes.  They should make it super easy to undo any action they might take.  Any program that doesn't do that is not ready for public use.

Agreed, especially if they're going to break basic system recovery functions in the process ... Forcing you to call them to get your files back. That's just having you files hijacked by a different entity...not protecting them.

Any administrative account on the system should be able to take ownership of a file.

Can't find it at the moment, but one of the hacking news sites had an article on hostel code that could be embedded in xlsx files, and a bunch of other types of MS Office document.

Bottom line, low-tech is best tech ...(because AV scanners miss stuff all the time)... Just contact them and ask if the file was sent intentionally.

This policy is mandatory at our office with any unsolicited attachments.

These would not seem to be the actions of a pukka civil servant per se, but rather the actions of the master, so secure in its position that it can overtly demonstrate a boorish/arrogant indifference to any public opinion/objection.

Maybe it's a first step in a process of desensitization of citizens towards a creeping erosion of rights and/or civil liberties - in the hope that, eventually, protest fatigue may set in and apathy take over.

Or maybe it's jumping the gun a bit? Speaking of which, at least in the US, the citizens still have the ability to ultimately protect themselves from the State in a worst case scenario, via the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution (i.e., the right to keep and bear arms), despite the seemingly ceaseless assault by the State, on those rights, at every opportunity.
Other Western democracies don't seem to have anything like that.

There's no doubt that the second amendment will get obliviated at the appointed time. It's just being left in place long enough to give the holdouts a false perception of accomplishment. With a war of inches it's just a matter of getting the other side to perceive events in a fashion that makes them beg for what you wanted to do to them in the first place. Kinda like the way everyone was cheering to destroy their own "right" to personal privacy on September 12th... It doesn't really matter who really perpetrated the 11th...(theories abound)...the point is the moment to strike because the audience was open wasn't lost on those that were looking to seize control ... And now here we all are (on fucking camera..).

Me neither. Maybe you think it to be silly, but did you try standard disk imaging software (to clone the disk bit by bit onto a new drive) with the portable hard disk in upside down position?

I have seen that silliness work on 2 different occasions, quite some years back now. Once in a company I worked at and once in a PIII computer I owned.

lol, I'm down with the voodoo method. but it does the death click no matter which position I try to spin it up in. It didn't lose 0 due to wear, the heads hit the platter on impact so the surface has been marred. No 0 == no read anything ... It's going to need professional help.

Okay... So I have a client that is an animal clinic that had a bunch of really important files on an external hard drive ... And said hard drive got knocked off the counter by one of their cats..

The cat is fine.

The hard drive however, is toast. As apparently the platters were spinning as it fell - so the heads weren't parked - and it's now exhibiting the can't find sector zero click-of-death behavior. So any and all software based recovery options are completely out-the-window. This is going to require professional help.

So... Does anyone have any first hand experience with a reputable data recovery service that they could/would recommend?? I never ran into this particular class of pickle previously...so I don't have an existing favorite.
