the console plugin is actually no longer needed... FARR now has built in support for running and capturing and redirecting output of commandline tools.

you can use the appcap command and the %lastappcap% variable to run commands and work with their output.

for example in an alias you could have:

appcap c:\windows\system32\ping.exe donationcoder.com;;;showmemo %lastappcap%

Seedling's Software / Re: New App! File/Folder Date Organizer
« Last post by mouser on April 21, 2009, 02:20 PM »
heayanae,
the built-in sorting operation you are describing is for sorting the view of files within a folder.
the tool by seedling is designed to create subfolders and move files into different folders based on their date.
so, very different operations.

Screenshot Captor / Re: How to capture a DOS screen with Screenshot Captor
« Last post by mouser on April 21, 2009, 12:19 PM »
i wonder if you can right click and configure the program to run in some kind of compatibility mode which would then let you screenshot it.

Alternatively, one thing that would almost certainly work would be to install a free virtual pc program (like VirtualPc or VirtualBox), and capture the image of that program running your dos game.

Site/Forum Features / Re: A DonationCoder job section for DC Coders?
« Last post by mouser on April 21, 2009, 12:15 PM »
This is again why my idea was to use an existing big job site web service, which anyone could visit when looking to hire someone.

The only modification would be that dc would have some control over which job applicants could join the DC group/page of people looking for work, and have a way where DC could add comments about different job applicants.  The point being that if someone was interested in hiring someone who hangs out at DC, they would have a way to do so and at least have some confidence that the person has been around DC for a while, and is known and trusted here with skills that have been demonstrated.  And the hirer would also know that they could come to DC for a bit of help if they have trouble with the person they hire, etc.

some programs like Launchbar commander will autodetect the drive change.
most programs (launchbar commander included, and farr), will let you specify relative paths, or paths using a special variable like %APPDRIVE% or %APPDIR%.

this seems like a good idea.

can i clarify: a solution to your problem would be a commandline tool that took as input a serial number and returned the hard drive number, is that right?

DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: Teddy - A simple drum machine!
« Last post by mouser on April 21, 2009, 11:50 AM »
It's a false alarm, the program is fine and has no virus.

I'll make sure scancode sees this post and checks it out, and figures out what might be upsetting PrevX.

My antivirus tool (Eset nod32) doesn't see anything wrong with it, so i'm quite sure it's a false alarm; the designation of it as "high risk cloaked malware" by Prevx makes me suspicious that it's one of those "guesses" that these security programs do when they aren't really sure if anything is wrong.

When in doubt the best thing is to upload a file to an online scanner like VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/) and get a second opinion.  I did this for the Teddy installer, and basically everything said it was fine except for PrevX which said exactly what you described, which again makes me confident that what we have here is yet another case of a security program scaring people into thinking a program is dangerous just because the security program gets confused.

In practical terms, you can either add an exception to PrevX to make it ignore teddy, or you can go into PrevX options and look for some setting that tells PrevX to stop being so annoying and blocking programs that it is only guessing about.

just copy the .ini configuration files from your existing installations to the usb drive.

afterwords you can edit the settings from within the program to change any drive letters, OR you could open the .ini files in a text editor and look for drive letters to change manually.

Newsletter for April 20th, 2009
Codename "Springtime Prelude"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings all, and welcome to another edition of the DonationCoder.com newsletter.

First and foremost, it's time to say thank you to everyone who helped make our 4th anniversary fundraiser in March such a great success.  We raised over $13,000 dollars thanks to the generous contributions from both new and long-time members.  That's enough money to pay for our web hosting costs and server administration for the next two years -- Yay!

We also wrapped up our first public survey and we've posted the results online for everyone to read.. Learn what your fellow readers think about the site and our software, and what we should concentrate on in the future.

So on behalf of everyone at the site, let me again say "Thank You."  Starting with this newsletter, we shall now return to normal, non-fundraising mode..

2. Your Participation Requested

No matter what your level of computer knowledge, or how long you've been a DC member, we'd love to have you participate on the forum.  See the links below for some good places to jump in and make your first post.

3. DC Site and Forum Stuff

One thing that makes it fun to hang out at the forum is that we're always hearing ideas for new features to make it a better place. We may not have time to implement every idea, but we try to stay busy!

4. Coding Snacks and Mini-reviews

The Coding Snacks Section is where people can request small utilities be coded while they wait.  Since the last newsletter we've had quite a few new ones.  And we've also got a new mini-review to add to the mix.

5. Software Discounts and Giveaways for April 2009

In April we have a discount on Macro Express Pro, and a chance to win a free copy of it, as well as some DC mugs to give away.  But you'll have to act quickly because the giveaway ends on April 22nd, and the discount ends on April 30th.

6. Software Discussion

It's probably fair to say that the majority of the discussions on DonationCoder.com are about computer software.  Below are some noteworthy threads about software posted to DC since the last newsletter.

7. Fun and Games

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out some of the lighter fare from the forum - humour, videos, and games..

8. Developer's Corner

If you're not a developer, don't be put off by the title of this section. There is likely something of interest to you on the Developer's Corner. It's more than just a forum for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial struggles, and general productivity issues.  And it's great to see that the section has been pretty active over the last few months -- keep it up people!

9. News You Can Use

DC Member Ehtyar has taken to producing wonderfully weekly summaries of important tech/computer/security news articles that he comes across on the web.  A big hit on the forum.  How is he able to keep up this pace and when will he collapse from exhaustion? We are all waiting to find out.

19814
when you add a modifier to a search directory, as described in the thread i referenced, you are telling farr NOT to search the folder by default, so it wont effect normal search times.  it will only search the directory when explicitly told to.

« Last post by mouser on April 20, 2009, 01:23 PM »
depends where you need to refer to a relative path..
but for example in FARR, you can use:
%APPDRIVE%
%FARRDIR%

other programs (screenshot captor, launchbar commander, etc.) are similar.

launchbar commander will actual try to fixup drive letter if it changes.

If I understand correctly, to install on a USB drive, I just run your installer and specify the USB drive path for the install.  Wouldn't it be better to just be able to unzip to the USB drive manually?

No. You do NOT have to run the installer.

The installers I create are actually "zip-compatible-exes", which means you can unzip them exactly as if they were .zip files, and then just run the programs from the unzipped location.
19818
Although it would be better if FARR and LBC works from the USB...which i think it does.

all of my programs (except url snooper which needs the winpcap drivers installed) can be run portably.
