Thanks for the info Carol.

I still haven't got the guts to install Neo Pro. But you seem to have found a solution to your woes.
Have you thought off using sonething like Zoot or Ultra Recall to manage your emails?

I'm considering these as potential solutions. Zoot has amazing searching features... You could try the beta and import some pst files into it. I don't know if it can import separate pst files though... Maybe.

I tried zoot. I don't find it ideal to work with Outlook. Some reasons :
- Recurrence don't seem to synchronize,
- Synching is prone to errors (don't know why...)
- "Sub-tasking" is not made much easier and does not transfer to outlook in a way that makes it easy to sync with a palm device (for example).
etc.

[Edit : at the same time : I wonder if zoot could be used just to manage old outlook data... Like emails for instance... and Ultra Recall can do that too. Maybe could be useful for those with Huge pst files. Carol?]

The freezer trick is one I use on my Dell batteries, with about a 75% success rate.  The original big battery that came with my 2003 Latitude still delivers about 3 hours.

Glad it's working for others!  I wish I could remember who taught me this so I could pass on the credit...

BTW ralph, do you completely discharge your battery before putting it in the freezer, or do you instead charge it ?

Thanks in advance...  :)

A good place to double-click is on the first column, the item number
bump

It doesn't work when I double click on the first column (and there is no item number in the column when the item consists of a linked documents.)

A single-click on the text and a double-click to launch, or
A double-click on an empty space in the cell

should be all that's necessary. I'll fix it if it is not behaving correctly

It works, but the "empty space" portion of the cell is difficult to click on.
Is it possible to launch the file with the keyboard?

Just tried it and I'm not having any problem.
1983
And its worth noting that while I use and like Archivarius, it isnt without its indexing problems.   I knew i had a file but archivarius wasnt finding it.  I eventually found it through just looking everywhere, fortunately it wasnt far away from the place it should have been, so then i double checked my search criteria, tried other words, and then i rebuilt the index, and it found it.  I have less than 10000 items in that index at this time so size shouldnt be a problem lol.

Anyway just thought i'd let you know that it to has its little quirks.  Ahh for a perfect system, and one that would make the coffee to, 8)

Interesting.
I one wants archivarius to be reliable, the index has to be updated properly each time, all pertinent extensions included, etc. Many things to check.
And because I still can't trust 100% any of these desktop search... I use two to double check!  :)

Personally, I don't see Evernote as the same sort of program as Keynote. I use both, but in different ways.

Well, they're not the same, of course (and no other software is exactly like one or the other). But Sri wants to "quickly jot down notes". For such a task, then can both do the job, and I believe there are some advantages in using Evernote. But it all depends on how you organize your stuff and function overall. These apps have to be tested.

The fact that Keynote doesn't have even a modest implementation of Boolean searching is the big minus for me.  Nor, sadly, do any of the other free ones, as far as I know.

EverNote does have basic boolean search. From the help file :

Both SmartSearch and search by Keyword Category offer advanced search syntax to allow you finding notes with OR, AND, and NOT between or within keywords, a keyword with leading spaces, a keyword inside another, a phrase, or any combination of these.

ever stopped a sync/backup profile in SyncBackSE? you have to start from scratch. SFFS will retake where it left it.

Very true! Although you can pause profiles in SBSE.
SFFS is a very good app. It's a matter of what one wants to do exactly.
SBSE does everything I need and much much more.

DBC -- you should really try both and see which one you prefer. Try to set profiles in SBSE to do exactly what you want. Try the same in SFFS.

but the 10,000 file limit on the trial is stopping me from making the purchase

Ask the developer : I'm sure he'll agree to send you a limitless version for testing purpose. He's nice. But, as Darwin said elsewhere, it can take a while before you get a response (it seems like he's alone...).

My feeling is that if you’re looking for something efficient — although a bit slow and incomplete for outlook PST files — you can’t really go wrong with Archivarius. In terms of precision, it’s really the best Desktop Search app I own. I do miss some of X1’s feature, and this is why I still use X1 for certain things. Since Archivarius has such a small footprint, I leave it open with X1, and update its index twice a day. It can take a bit of time to get familiar with its features and configuration, but once you get it, you realize how reliable it is.

I wasn't sure whether or not Tag2Find made any hard-to-undo changes to the file structure like that.

It might make some invisible changes to the NTFS alternate data streams. I do believe tag2find can erase any changes it applies to files.
But if you're worried -- and I understand why you’d be -- just ask the developers on their forum. They're very friendly and answer each and every question! I'd actually be interrested in the response they'll give you.

Thanks Armando!  I appreciate the time and effort taken to reply to me.

You're very welcome.  :)

We should start a thread on novel-writing-helper-software.  I know there is some.
And maybe someone on the site could consider writing a little program to help in some way as part of this challenge we are doing in november.

TomColvin has a great blog covering some of these specialized software. A good place to start : Becoming a Writer Seriously

The fact that keynote is no longer developped is a big minus IMO.
It also lacks several features of more modern note takers.

Evernote is also a really nive noteprogram should try out.

I second that, of course.  :)
Free version available, powerful, fast.
Feature full.
Invoke it with ctrl + alt + n - appears instantly. And you can use win key + a to send anything to evernote instantly).
Easy to retrieve notes, search etc.
The best note taker and web clip collector IMHO

2- Maybe that has been mentioned before : farr finds but cannot launch a file if it has a space as the last character of its name
(e.g. : E:\Doct\xLC-.Moreno,Jacob L.__Théâtre de la spontanéité__+tgsPat tgsPthée+ .doc)

That bug hasn't been added yet to the "FARR v2 - Official Bug Tracking Thread".

Thanks!

No Future? I see people using palms day in and day out. Heck, palm just released centro and have new devices slated for release. Palm is great at what it does, far more stable than Windows Mobile, and has a very large following.

I agree! :)

... Any donationcoder members still using SyncBackSE?
DBC

Yes, I still use SyncBackSE. I have looked at SF about 4 times. I have tried earnestly to see what everyone's enthusiasm is with SF and I just don't. So, there is at least 1 left. :)

Ken

same here. synbackse works well for me.  It has plenty of features.

I should've kept notes about why I decided to keep syncbackse instead of sffs but... I didn't. One thing I remember though: I was interested in the delta updating of files but it didn't seem to make a big difference in speed in the end.

People seem to find syncbackse unreliable... but it's always been pretty reliable to me. :)

well, there's superboyac Notetaking Software Roundup #1. It's not up to date (many software like EverNote have changed a great deal since it was first published), but summarizes the first 200 posts...  ;D

Just curious - any progress on finding a good tagging solution for home PC files?  Sounds like Tag2Find is still not quite ready for general usage.

well... It depends what you're expecting. I personally found that it worked quite well. The main reason why I didn't use it is because it didn't integrate with my other desktop search applications (X1, Archivarius, Locate32, farr)

But only if it is consistent and doesn't change too much of the existing file structure.

What do you mean?

BTW, I still cannot find any such feature in DOpus.  I had hoped that DOpus would have something to make tracking/grouping files easier, but it seems that I just have Windows Explorer with some added bells on it. Not quite as big a deal as I had first thought.

DO aficionados would probably want to torture you for saying that.  ;D
IMO DO is much much more than explorer with some added bells... Maybe it just doesn't have what you're looking for.

Of course I may not be using it to its fullest extent, but so far I have not gotten any good answers for doing a lot of the things I had thought DOpus would help with.

You could always use what they call "file collections"  (basically virtual folders). Although when I trialed DO, I didn't find them reliable for my own everyday usage : my filenames change all the time, and the file collections didn't seem to deal well with frequent name changes. There are other solutions in Total Commander and Speed Commander. Didn't test them though.

Armando - any luck so far finding a good, solid tagging application for Windows?

Nope. I think tag2find is what comes closest to what I'm looking for. But I'm waiting for the 2nd generation and a number of modification before committing any data to it. In the mean time, I'm using my own system and I've become used to it... I almost like it now How do you tag (or even organize) your files?. But takes some discipline.

I experience the same problem today  :(

FARR can not launch some of my programs, e.g MS Word 2007  :tellme:

I checked/unchecked the "Always launch shortcuts directly instead of resolving links" setting but it didn't help.

Any suggestions?

Have you modified your shortcut names in any way? I know I've had problems with file names containing a space as the last caracter (before the file type extension e.g. : "hello .doc"). Farr would find them but not launch them.

Try to find out if there is a common denominator between all these file names/shortcut names farr won't launch.

So how do you see people using SQLNotes in cunjunction with Outlook (or even thunderbird, the bat !) email feature? Drag and Drop possibilities (to the calendars or todo lists)? Or more officially implement the solution you offered to the customer your refered to?... Just wondering.
I've postponed this to much later since I've got more urgent matters (d'autres chats à foutter pour l'instant).
3 possibilities:
1- Copy-paste or drag-drop content from email to HTML pane
2- Outlook item link (double-click to open)
3- Import email info into SN fields (from, to, subject, date, etc). The CRM solution I was referring to had this plus semi-automated reply (would insert user-defined text documents and signatures, would send it out and update the statistics inside SN) [edit] It may re-appear since I know the customer is eager to get the new SN version (they are using a 3 year-old version) and willing to pay for the specific adaptations made.[/edit]

But unless it's a user request, it will not be before 1 year.

I understand. Thanks Pierre!

I imagine I'll need to install an SQL database application -- or actually as a service -- on my PC for that.  MSSQL? Or another?

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean... but you don't need anything special to run SQLnotes. Just download the *.exe here : http://www.sqlnotes....abid/61/Default.aspx , install it and...  run it...

Is there a way (potentially) to automatically "colorcode" or format items depending on the content (item name, etc.)?
Yes you could use color coding based on file extension. A simple user-defined function would do it and it would be automatic. Use the FileName field which is automatically filled in on drag-drop.

Thanks! I'll try that.

Your hard disk IS a database with a UI fine-tuned to effectively manage files. To replicate this in another program is redundant.

This is exactly my point of view -- which I've expressed in a number of threads here.
