Living Room / Flash Game of the Week: Morning Star
« Last post by mouser on May 06, 2009, 06:14 AM »
Dora over at JayIsGames.com writes today about a terrific point and click Flash adventure game that is positively dripping with atmosphere.  You're in a space ship that has crash landed and must find your way off the planet.  Very well done with images that look hand drawn, and a compelling storyline (so far at least -- i haven't finished it).

Newsletter for May 6th, 2009
Codename "Here Comes Summer"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings all, and welcome to another edition of the DonationCoder.com newsletter.

After the March fundraiser my engine seemed to run low on fuel and I slowed down a bit in terms of working on my DC programs.. But something remarkable has been happening on the forum lately -- a few DC forum regulars have started writing utilities and mini-reviews like crazy and sharing them.  What a treat for all of us!  Be sure to check them out as you go through the newsletter -- and send them a little thank you or a few donation credits to let them know that you appreciate it.

If you are going to be anywhere near Germany at the end of May, you need to find a way to get down to the DC meetup in Berlin on May 31st at c-base, the very cool geek bar/club that dc members housetier and gjehle help run.  It's a very cool place, and most importantly we've sent ahead some very cool and very rare custom DonationCoder Cody Spaceship mugs that will be on hand to be given out to DC members who show up.  These are going to be collector's items one day so don't miss your chance to get one.  See the post below and let them know if you will be attending.

2. Your Participation Requested

We'd love to have your participation on the forum, no matter what your level of computer knowledge, or how long you've been a DC member.  The links below point to some good places to jump in and make your first post.

3. DC Site and Software Discussion

One of the fun things about hanging out on the forum is that we're always hearing ideas for new features to make it a better place. We may not have time to implement every idea, but we keep busy trying!

4. Coding Snacks

The Coding Snacks Section is where people can request small utilities to be coded while they wait - bespoke coding, if you will.  Since the last newsletter, we've had a *LOT* of new requests -- several forum members have been on fire lately!

5. Member Mini-reviews

The mini-review section of the forum is where people can post short reviews of programs that they have tried or that they use regularly.  We only require that the reviewers not be associated in any way with the program or company being reviewed.

6. Sites, Services, and Articles on the Web

DC members are very generous in sharing their cyber discoveries with us on the forum. See some recent findings below.

7. Software Giveaway for May 2009

For May we have 10 copies of Total Commander, the famous file explorer, to give away.  We'll probably give a bunch away to mini-review and coding snack authors, but we aren't 100% sure how to pick the winners yet, so drop by the forum often to find out.

8. Software Discussion

It's probably fair to say that the majority of the discussions on DonationCoder.com are about computer software.  Below are some interesting threads about software posted to DC since the last newsletter.

9. Fun and Games

If you've read the newsletter up to this point, take a break and check out some of the lighter fare from the forum - humour, videos, and games..

10. Developer's Corner

The title of this section is "Developer's Corner", not "Non-developers Stay Out!", so don't be put off by the title. There is probably something that will interest you here. It's more than just a forum for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial struggles, and general productivity issues.  And it's great to see that the section has been pretty active over the last few months -- keep it up people!

11. News You Can Use

DC Member Ehtyar writes wonderful weekly summaries of important tech/computer/security news articles that he comes across on the web.  A big hit on the forum.  How is he able to keep up this pace and when will he collapse from exhaustion? We are all aflutter waiting to find out..

« Last post by mouser on May 05, 2009, 06:42 PM »
presets and preferences: yes (just copy ini file(s)).
groups and favorites: no.

i really do need to add an xml import+export functionality so that people can easily migrate to other pcs or other programs.
19683
go to where you want to paste and hit ctrl+alt+V to bring up quick paste menu, then select the item.

Are you saying that LBC will automatically change all these letters according to whatever drive letter gets assigned to the USB?  So, I don't have to do any of the relative path "..\" business?

yes.  and if it doesnt work i will make it work.

we should have a contest to find the *most* niche forum in existence.. i.e. the forum that is the most specific and narrow and would be useful for the fewest number of people on the planet.

my brain hurts from this post.. i don't understand it.

ProcessTamer / Re: Process Tamer for commercial use?
« Last post by mouser on May 04, 2009, 06:53 AM »
I have updated the commercial use page to clarify an issue.  Here is the new paragraph added:

  • [*CLARIFICATION 5/4/09] If you are simply an individual using the program at work, it doesn't matter if you are a member of a large business -- you do not need a formal commercial license (unless the program specifically says a commercial license is required for all profit making use).  Commercial Licenses are normally intended for the situation where many people at your business all use the program.

I added the clarification because it sounded like you might have thought you needed a commercial license just because you happened to be part of a larger business entity, and i realized people could get the wrong impression about this.

Lot's of people have a business life that allows them to put programs they like on their computer, and it would seem wrong to designate such use as "Commercial Use".

Find And Run Robot / Re: Stop FARR From Searching Further?
« Last post by mouser on May 04, 2009, 06:28 AM »
yes, though if you find yourself having this problem, moving to a 2 step launch process:
  • hit a key to stop search then hit a key to launch.
may solve the problem because it gives you just enough milliseconds to stop yourself from launching if you notice the results changing while you were pressing the stop search key (down arrow, escape, etc.)

actually i suppose maybe FARR could be made to address this problem slightly couldn't it..
if FARR updates the display, and you hit launch within some small time window of the update, FARR could detect that right?
and then check if the item you want to launch got moved down during the update.
if so, FARR could either adjust it's guess of what you REALLY wanted to launch
or.. stop searching, beep and let you know that your launch request was interrupted by a late breaking update of list and you should choose again.
kind of cool idea.

Example:
Result list shows:
1. notepad
2. wordpad
3. ideapad

you hit the 2 key to launch wordpad.
as you are moving to hit the 2 key, a new result sneaks in at location 2, so that new results are:
1. notepad
2. evilpad
3. wordpad
4. ideapad

normally farr would now launch item 2.  but in this case it knows that previous item 2 got shifted down a mere 100 ms before you hit the 2 key.

so it guesses that you could not have seen and reacted to this new number 2 so quickly.  therefore you PROBABLY meant to choose the PREVIOUS #2 (now #3), wordpad.

so it could just go ahead and launch wordpad.

OR it could simply stop searching, give you a little sound tone letting you know it didn't launch anything due to caution, and needs you to select what you want to launch again.

what do you think, is it a fun enough idea that it's worth implementing?  it would be optional of course, with user-selectable time window interval for this behavior.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Couple suggestions
« Last post by mouser on May 03, 2009, 11:35 PM »
both should be easily fixable -- putting them on my todo list. glad you like it.
ps. i always have mine docked so i dont have much experience with ontop of non-docked.
19692
hmm.. ill look into it debug warning -- did the icon for the folder look wrong or empty?

there is an option for sounds in each launch bar.
19693
and if you like FARR, you might like my LaunchBar Commander.

ok just download new version from same url (not updated the updater version), and try it:

https://www.donation...AndRunRobotSetup.exe

NOTE: you will have to exit and restart after changing the option about showing superlarge rows vs. rescaling.
19695
The download is:
https://www.donation...s/moby_thesaurus.exe

But we need to get the pages back up.. Anderson is still around but not actively developing mobysaurus currently.
