Really I'm not sure how the free email services manage to keep a viable business model going after enabling POP3/IMAP/SMTP.

Yes, that's a good point.  Maybe they get enough Web business to deliver ad revenue.  I hope they won't take your comment to heart   ;)

Is it possible to have your CompuServe email forwarded to your Gmail/Yahoo account?

Don't think so.  I didn't think to look for that specifically, but there certainly wasn't anything obvious, and I've skimmed through the options.  It has a calendar and spam controls, but is pretty bare-bones.

That's gone if you ask me, they're just letting everyone keep their email addresses

Could still be useful to me for legacy reasons.  Some programs and forums I bought/signed up for when CI$ was the only Internet address I had, and can't always remember which they are.  Some of them send information on updates, but only on rare occasions.  I thought it would be easier to keep that address than trying to change everything.  I wish CompuServe'd added POP3 like Google, Yahoo UK and GMX, but there you are.

CompuServe isn't exactly gone.  It's changed into another Webmail system, i.e. supply your own ISP instead of using CompuServe itself.  There's no option for POP3 that I can see, which is a pity as most of the alternatives I've tried do have POP3.

For sure an over-enthusiastic false positive. What does it say is wrong with it??

I can't remember what OfficeScan said the first time.  I just downloaded E-MailChecker.zip again and tried once more, but the only message in OfficeScan's log is "Possible_Virus."  That's oh, so helpful   >:(

Windows PowerPro (http://powerpro.webeddie.com/) has a sticky note component.
-Doppelganger (July 01, 2009, 12:12 PM)

I run the excellent PowerPro and don't disagree with anything you say - but I started with a shareware sticky notes program (Magic Notes) before I had PowerPro, and have to say I found dedicated sticky notes programs easier to use than PowerPro's sticky notes feature.  If you want freeware, Zhorn Software's Stickies is hard to beat, and I most probably wouldn't have paid money if I'd found it first.

Giampy,

I thought I was a dinosaur and I use Win98SE  :)  I don't know about AutoClip, but you might want to try some of the older clipboard enhancers.  I don't know for certain that they'll all work on Win95, but they should on Win98 so there's hope.  I've only tried the first two myself.

  • ArsClip (version 3.0.2 was the last one that worked on Win98SE for me)
  • ClipCache 1.41 (last freeware version) OS: Win9x/NT/ME/2000/XP
  • Clipomatic  "works on any modern version of Windows."
  • Oscar's MiniCLIP  "this was written in a time when NT 4.0 was a hot beta and Windows 95 was gaining popularity"

There are many other DC threads mentioning clipboard extenders: try a forum search.

I have edited the Wikipedia page and now EditPad Pro is also present.

All I'm seeing is a link to a blank page, unless it takes time for an edited page to appear.  However, a rudimentary page for EditPad Pro is here on the TextEditors.org Wiki.

I don't know if it helps, but WebSite-Watcher can import lists of URLs from various browsers, from text files with one URL per line or one name and a URL per line, and also import RSS feeds from an OPML file.

You might try Horst Schaeffer's Qsel or PopSel launchers.  Both have automatic drive letter handling on flash drives, CD-ROMs etc.

Magic number; just made post number 1,234.

kalos, I haven't yet tried this freeware myself, but it looks like it might be what you are seeking:
Quotepad at http://quotepad.info/

That's very suspicious.  The quotepad screenshot looks almost identical to Notesholder Lite, apart from the filter, and even uses the same hotkey.

TIA...

Take a look at these two similar threads on DC:

Clipboard type programme to collect together snippets of text

Really simple clipboard extender/note taking software?

Looks like Mike Sanders' PasteBoard has vanished from the Net again.  I must have a copy available somewhere: let me know if you want to try it, and I'll either attach it to a post or e-mail it to you.

Another possibility you might like to try is Notesholder by A!K Research Labs.  Even the freeware Lite version now has basic clip ability.  Mark your text in your browswr, press the Notesholder hotkey, and you have an instant new note, complete with the URL too.

A software that spots differences in the pages could be useful, but it generates too many false positives, because each time that a software page is updated (new version) I will receive an alert, not only when a page disappears or is replaced with one from a parked domain.

I use WebSite-Watcher from respected DC member aignes (Martin Aignesberger) to do exactly that, tell me when something has been updated.  But, you could set its filters to ignore changes in version numbers and dates, so you could see when something else about a page had changed, such as its disappearance.  It gives you a "Page not available?" warning in such cases.  You might also try running one of Martin's other programs, AM-DeadLink, a freeware for link checking.

Comfort Keys says it's Vista-compatible.  There's both Lite and Pro versions, both payware, different prices.  Its smaller brother Comfort Typing might do, but check versions of all these carefully to make sure you pick one that has all the features you want.

« Last post by rjbull on June 18, 2009, 05:19 AM »
@Steven Avery:

Amazing list, thanks, though only some of them are of interest owing to needing to read PDFs.  The ABBYY ScreenShot Reader looks a good deal if you only want a (possibly better) equivalent of JOCR.  Thanks to Darwin, I reported Nuance's success at reading a complex page here on DC

pre-processing through Fox-it PDF editor, and that is one of many methods.  I wonder if a .pdf editor is the best method for increasing text size, this is a bit hard to automate, I presume you could get the same results with an image editing tool but that Fox-it was easy to use ?  However the editor is a $100 product so for beyond trial that is pricey.

Foxit PDF Editor: I have a licence for Foxit PDF Editor already, for other reasons.  I used it for this job because it renders PDFs at least as well as the other PDF utilities I tried (Adobe 9 Standard, PDF-XChange Viewer and Able2Extract Pro), and is by far the fastest to load.

In an unexpected (by me) new development, the latest version (4.25) of IrfanView has an OCR plugin, as noted here on DC.

1968
Hmm... now that I see the jpg "full-size" here, maybe it's not the best test candidate... The font looks big in the jpg. rjbull - do you have an image file that you could post for me to try to convert or is this what you were looking for?

I sent Darwin the front page of a patent PDF file, and Nuance made a very good job of OCR'ing it into usable text.  Able2Extract couldn't touch it.  Maybe I should ask them to raise their game   :(

Darwin, many thanks for the test.  Expect some DC credits!  :)

[Edit]
Aaauuuggghhh!   :'(    I spoke too soon!  I just tried Able2Extract again - and this time it worked!   :'(  Leaving aside explanations such as Rupert Sheldrake's morphic resonance, I think I must have pressed Ctrl-A in Able2Extract meaning the whole page, but it included the whole file, all 99 pages of it, and choked on converting something that size.  Just marking a section or a single page and converting that now works OK.  And it darned well should, too.  Here's part of the About screen:

Copyright     2000 - 2008 Investintech.com Inc.
Nuance      OCR     1994-2008 Nuance, Inc.

That is, it uses Nuance OCR technology!   :o  On a quick look I still think Nuance's own conversion was a little better at least on the graphics, but Able2Extract has done a perfectly adequate job on the text.

Oh, well.  I suppose that means I don't have to buy yet another software licence.  I'm catching Darwin up all too rapidly as it is  :(

General Software Discussion / XYplorer 8.00 released with DUAL PANES (!)
« Last post by rjbull on June 16, 2009, 03:43 AM »
XYplorer 8.00 has been released on 15-Jun-2009. Here's a quick introduction to the main new features:

1) Dual Pane
Dual Pane file management is synonymous with productivity and ease of use. It combines comfort, speed, and power in the most natural way, namely by letting you look at the contents of two folders side by side.
Both panes are tabbed, and can be arranged vertically or horizontally, or shown individually as single panes.

2) Overlong filenames supported.
All fundamental file operations now work with extremely long filenames (longer than 260 characters): Rename, Copy, Move, Delete, Preview, Thumbnails, Backup, Properties, Time Stamp, Attributes Stamp, etc.
1973
I haven't tried it, but I'm fairly sure I've seen positive mentions on DC before.

@Curt:

The few PDFs I tried it on had a text box around every few letters (even words were usually comprised of multiple text boxes).  I don't have a burning need to edit pdfs, so I just dropped it.

What I wonder now is if other (possible more expensive) PDF editors such as INfix handle things such that this issue isn't noticeable by the user?

Curt, do you mean that Infix allows you to ignore the boxes, and looks to the user like you're editing free text?
