Jibz, your screenshot looks very good and captures the spirit of DOS Navigator very well. My only suggestion is I strongly urge you to upgrade to the latest 7.5 beta. It's very stable & the functionality added is incredible.

When Christian asked for my information he asked if I wanted a disc mailed to me. I didn't have the heart to take him up on the offer. I told him he had been generous enough. I wasn't going to soak him for who knows how much money to send me a disc continents and oceans away.

I probably should have mentioned this in my last post, but I'll share my solution with you. I used to run around scurrying for the best ways to put divx files on DVD & I finally got fed up one day & bought a DVD player capable of playing divx files that had a USB port on the front of it.

Now I just put my video files onto my USB flash drive & plug it into the DVD player. Saved me a crap-load of money in blank DVD discs.

If you are looking for something simple Nero will do what you want. Ulead also sells something that is fairly powerful, but won't overwhelm with complexity.

I'll definitely look into doing so, though I do wish I could find the program discounted somewhere.  Bits du Jour, perhaps, or, of course, Donation Coder.
-cyberdiva

Last time I scoured the internet looking for a discount code I think the best I could find was a $5-7 discount. Life's rough when you're a diva.  ;)

I bought The Bat! (check the forum for a 50% discount code) at RegNow and paid in Euros. I saved $5-6 dollars off what RegNow wanted to charge me and my bank only charged a dollar or so to convert the currency. It was definitely worth doing it that way.

Wherever the discussion is heading, and however people feel about these issues, in the end we need a COMMON FORMAT for file descriptions.
-kartal

The closest thing we have to 'a common format for file descriptions" is descript.ion files. The format was invented in the early 90s by JPSoft & is the only format that is used by numerous programs to this day. Maybe now is the time for a new universal format, but till the descript.ion files are the only thing one can use between multiple programs and have a common database of file descriptions.

Just received my key! Thanks fenix (and Christian if you are reading this)!

Today's the day if you are wanting to purchase this program. Two caveats:

1) Lifetime upgrades is $19.95 extra as confirmed by the author.

2) The ability to run the portable version is $10 extra as confirmed by the author.

I must say, for a descript.ion user you did a fine job in describing my work!
-DonL

I told you. I'm passionate about file managers. I've tried well over 75 of them extensively and yes, yours was one of them.

I still think descript.ions would augment tags.dat functionality without being redundant.

Since Adobe won't sell the media to you I'd just find a friend who'd be willing to let you copy their CDs or upload some ISOs to you.

General Software Discussion / Re: Duplicate Finder 2009
« Last post by Innuendo on June 17, 2009, 10:17 AM »
If I go to www.ashisoft.com I'm pitched Duplicate Finder & the last release on that was back on June 1, 2008. You can buy this product in its basic form for $26.00 or along with MP3 search capability for $59.95.

Now if I go over to their other web site www.duplicate-finder-pro.com I find that I can buy that progam in its basic form for $29.95 or along with MP3 search capability for $49.95.

Looking at screenshots of both programs they do have some similarities. Maybe this new program is not not an upgrade to the old one. Fair enough. However, sitting on enhancements to this kind of program for a year just so you can roll out a new program with a different name leaving your old registered users out in the cold does not strike me as fair, either. I think a lot of negative connotations with what they are doing could have been circumvented by saying, "All right we're releasing Duplicate Finder v4.0. It has a lot of new features so we are having to ask everyone to pay an upgrade fee to the new version to cover R&D costs. Furthermore, with all these new features comes a new name for the product: Duplicate Finder Pro."

This all reminds me of what the Helium Music Manager folks did a few years ago. However, the Helium folks did not offer any discounts at all to their new version.

I use them too but I'm less ardent than you :)
-cranioscopical

Yes, ardent is a nice way to describe my levels of excitement sometimes reaching fanaticism regarding file managers. ;)

I do want to state for the record that I admire what Don's been accomplishing with his file manager. He's trying to bring all the power of the Total Commanders and Directory Opuses of the world to an Explorer-style file manager without becoming as convoluted in the options/preferences department as Directory Opus and I think he's done very well accomplishing that.

I just miss descript.ion file support.

Fenix, you may not have to complete your task at hand after all. I just received an email from Christian requesting my information. I went ahead and sent it on to him.

kartal, I've never had to set up a VPN myself. I've never had to use one, either, so your information on this topic far surpasses my own.

Looks like you are either going to have to buy something or program your own. No wonder the PowerFolder guys started charging for their app. There's evidently nothing else like it.

cranioscopical, you're right, of course. I'm probably coming on way too strong, but I'm very passionate about file managers. I would, however, like to discuss with Don the uses of descript.ion files and let him know how I use them to keep track of things between programs and hopefully he'll reconsider adding the feature.

His tags.dat file format may be wonderful, but it cannot replace descript.ion files for me till other programs can access the tags.dat file's contents.

First of all, I want this to be a neutral place to comment. However, looking at the XYplorer forum I have to apologize to all of the XYplorer users as they were not the ones posting the negative comments. Those comments seem to be only posted by the admin.

I'm not convinced of the concept of descript.ion files. It looks like a bureaucratic overhead to me, which leads to more problems than solutions.
And, the sheer fact that not every program supports it reduces its usefulness considerably, doesn't it?
-admin

Bureaucratic overhead? More problems than solutions? If this were the case the file format would have died out back in 1993 instead of having lived on so long.

I have a lot of experience with work organisation, and I found more often than not that adding another level of description leads to more problems, more work, more waste of time.
-admin

More work? More waste of time? This person has no idea how descript.ion files can be  utilized. I cannot even put into words how much time has been saved or my organization helped by having descript.ion files at my disposal.

Sorry, but this topic is through. TrackerV3 is for people who know the art of naming files.
-admin

Sorry, but descript.ion files, at least the way I use them, have nothing in the world at all with the art of naming files.

As author I see it as my responsibility to make some decisions for the user. This may seem arrogant, but this arrogance is inherent in any authorship, isn't it?
-admin

Yes, make decisions, but make informed decisions, please. I use descript.ion files for automation and tracking purposes not for storing what I should have named the file in the first place.

Why am I typing all this? I have a sincere desire to see XYplorer improve. Yes, I love Total Commander, but if something else surpasses its usability I can see myself one day replacing it or at the very least using the two side-by-side.

And regarding explorer thumbnails, I love them and have them turned on in Total Commander, but I do realize that they do slow the file listings down & Don has stated he wants to keep XYplorer as fast as possible so I can understand why he would have omitted the feature in the name of speed.

Just thinking outside the box here, since we can't seem to find something new for you to use what if we fixed what was lacking in your current solution? If the only thing missing from the PowerFolder version you are using now is encryption would it be possible to run the internet connections between your syncing PCs through a VPN tunnel? That'd eliminate anyone being able to 'eavesdrop' on your data streams.

I myself have never posted wishes or bugs in the XYplorer in the user forum over there because I have seen what happens when someone suggests something that upsets the established way of doing things. I see people post suggestions & I get mental images of the poster being holed up in Frankenstein's castle as the villagers, errr...other forum users storm the castle with torches and pitchforks.

And, Don, if you are reading this, tags.dat are not a replacement for descript.ion files. I can elaborate more on that point here if you'd like, but people over in your forum start foaming at the mouth every time someone brings the point up over there.

(And this is not a slam against Don, his program, his forum, or his users. They just get a little over-enthusiastic from time to time.)

Is it like charged up VNC? I have never used it really.
-kartal

Yeah, it's like a super-charged VNC. It's jam-packed full of features and if you have a decent broadband connection it's like the remote PC is right in front of you. Again, way overkill for your needs.

kartal, the method I have always used was RemotelyAnywhere & that's the only advice I could impart, but it's commercial software & it'd be way overkill for what you want to do.
