Living Room / What is a mouser? What does it mean to mouser someone?
« Last post by Josh on August 15, 2008, 10:32 AM »
As many of our users are aware, DonationCoder.com has an IRC channel which allows users to chat in realtime with one another. Well, in this channel, we have developed a term which we wanted the entire community to become familiar with. This term is mouser (Verb). The definition of mouser is "To purposely leave a conversation, or gathering, without notice or intent of returning for at least a 2 hour period". An example of it's usage is "Man, that guy just mousered me.". Well, our administrator, mouser, is the founder and originator of this term. Mouser's personality often times finds him leaving a conversation, much like someone with ADD, for a random task such as fixing his air conditioner, getting dental work performed, or upgrading his homemade Book Case.

So, if you happen to stop by the channel, or have been "mousered" yourself, please post here and let us know!

That is one of the beauties of technology. It is with computer technology advancing as it has that we are able to do things like this. Heck, they have similar technology for runners to evaluate their running styles in various conditions (windy, rain, hills, etc). Very impressive

Why wear a swimsuit? Wouldn't the olympics be more interesting if the swimmers wore no suits?

We should have a DC olympics in celebration of the real ones! We could have a coding contest to see who can code an app the fastest. Make a task for the app to perform, and see who can write it the quickest. Specify a start date and time so all will know when to check the boards, then start the timer and go!

I am also surprised at that 40hz, your post seemed very rational and was well constructed. I am of the mindset, let people use what they use, don't insult or flame users for it or their opinion. To each their own.

I am with you mouser, each has their flaws and I am not afraid to admit a flaw to a program. This is not the case as found in a lot of sites.

I have to agree about the attacks that take place on windows users. It happens at almost every linux oriented site around the web, and several windows sites as well. Its not just linux, its the FOSS community in general. They attack users who have anything negative to say about their software or platform, Example of our very own Zaine attacking ME for posting an honest review which attacked no one (I am Metshrine). Granted, my second review has a part that is uncalled for (so please don't bring that part up), but the attacks against my original review and against myself in this thread are just examples of attacks that take place all over the internet from people who are either FOSS enthusiasts or believers in that all software should be paid for ONE TIME ONLY, which has been spawned by the FOSS initiative.

One other thing I notice is that linux users, the fanatics, also take the time to insult Microsoft itself at any opportunity. Plenty of examples can be found where users find an article dealing with Microsoft and then bring up something as vain as OOXML or any other fault of Microsoft. Again, I have witnessed people bring stuff up like that for no reason other than because the original article had to do with Microsoft. I am sorry, but this is the one thing that detracts me from the FOSS world. That and given that there is no definitive source of support for many programs. A lot of them are supported only lightly by the developers because they use the mentality "I provided this for free, support it yourself".

These to me, are the biggest detractors from linux. I have had several people ask me if they should switch to linux and my response to them is "only if you have the time to find the answers on your own". The support for the average user is just not there and if it is it will resort in attacks for "not knowing the answer" or claiming that a but exists in the software.

Now all they need is an installer or a GUI that can start each of these tools with parameters for the noobies! I for one would love the installer option for a local machine. That, and an updater. I've seen one, but it only includes like 8-9 of the tools (the more common ones like procexp and autoruns)

General Software Discussion / Is your ISP throttling you? If so, check for it!
« Last post by Josh on August 04, 2008, 01:30 PM »
s your ISP interfering with your BitTorrent connections? Cutting off your VOIP calls? Undermining the principles of network neutrality? In order to answer those questions, concerned Internet users need tools to test their Internet connections and gather evidence about ISP interference practices. After all, if it weren't for the testing efforts of Rob Topolski, the Associated Press, and EFF, Comcast would still be stone-walling about their now-infamous BitTorrent blocking efforts.

Developed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Switzerland is an open source software tool for testing the integrity of data communications over networks, ISPs and firewalls. It will spot IP packets which are forged or modified between clients, inform you, and give you copies of the modified packets.

You can download the latest release of Switzerland here. Before you run it, be sure to check out the notes about privacy, security, and firewalls. Switzerland is currently in alpha release as a command line tool. In other words, right now it is aimed at relatively sophisticated users. However, because it's an open source effort, we anticipate making it easier to use over time (please please please let us know by email, by IRC, or by filing bugs if you're running the client but it isn't working for you — we've seen some clients reconnecting in cycles that makes us think there's a bug we should fix!).

Switzerland Homepage

What do you think? Will this help or will ISP's simply look for ways around this.
