as for the major commandline feature, once phitsc's MRU tool comes out youll see how it's used.
as for the tab submenus:  create one tab submenu on the dock, and then create normal submenus as children of it; then the top level tab node can switch between its children submenus.

Ok here we go, some real additions this time:

v1.104.01 - June 17, 2009
  • [BugFix] Adding entries from running processes was not grabbing full file path -- hopefully i haven't broken anything in fixing this.
  • [MajorFeature] You can now specify node menus that are built from commandline tool output (or file contents); this can be used to create plugin-like nodes.
  • [Feature] Added ability to overide icon+caption settings for submenu nodes and tab nodes and their children -- this lets you mix and match large and small icons on a dock bar.
  • [BugFix] Captions weren't changing properly on tab nodes when switching.
  • [Feature] You can now Ctrl+Click on dynamic file/folder menu items to open their *containing* folder.
  • [BugFix] The %APPDRIVE% and %APPDIR% replacements were not being done properly.
  • [BugFix] Trying to fix the occasional error when using the "Configure this item" menu.
  • [BugFix] On Windows Vista and Windows 7, LBC was by default saving the initial launchbar in, and defaulting to saving in, the Program Files directory.  This is now changed to the user's documents directory.  If you are using VISTA or Windows7 and have a previous version installed, please save your custom launchbars in a directory of your own choosing and remember to back it up with your other data files.
  • [MajorFeature] You can now create "tab" submenu nodes, which are meant to hold a collection of child submenus, which can be switched between.  By placing such a tab submenu on your dock you can easily click to switch the configuration of your docking bar icons on the fly to different sets of buttons to suit your needs.
  • [BugFix] Mouseover hints should work now if you enable them on dock options.

well it's certainly possible if enough people wanted it -the plugins that is -- i don't know about this unification thing ;)
19154
Could one use this feature to have cpu or ram usage shown live on LBC's buttons? Or disk usage? Or temperatures?

that requires a plugin system.. something i've considered, but is pretty low on my priority list, given that LBC is not the most beautiful sidebar type thing, and people who like to have gauges and dials tend to like to have really pretty displays.

LBC is very good at not losing .mcf files and contents,
but it can happen that LBC forgets which mcf file was last loaded if it crashes-- which scares people.

see if you can find your .mcf file before worrying about any backup files..

what operating system are you using? LBC sometimes stores by default in its application folder, sometimes in your docs and settings folder, depending on the OS.
let's talk over email and ill see if i cant help you find it ([email protected])

fixed, will be in next update tonight.  sorry for the inconvenience.
19157
right ok -- yes then you are right.  it probably makes more sense to think of a menu of items that you might want to take action on -- so maybe a menu of unreplied emails where you could click any of the items to open up your mail program with that email in the reply editor, etc.

Developer's Corner / Re: Branding with DonationCoder name
« Last post by mouser on June 17, 2009, 10:51 AM »
That is such a nice thing to offer.

Some thoughts:
Regarding the tool, it's a fantastic idea, but see this idea on DC here about a very similar script idea called Axem, implemented by DC member Justice : https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=15482.0
Still it's a good enough idea to be worthy of multiple implementations.

Now about the donating and "branding", here's how i think of it:

When a coder who hangs out on DC makes a cool program and shares it with the public, it benefits this site.  People learn about the site through such things, and decide to become active members, or donate to the site after discovering it, or write about the program which leads people back to the site, etc.

In other words, from my perspective i don't think there is any reason for anyone to go so far as formally giving their code to DC or asking that people donate to DC directly for their software.  It's just as helpful to the site if you make DC your home away from home -- and either don't worry about donations, or ask for people to donate directly to you if they appreciate your work.

When good active people are part of the DC family, we all benefit (and it leads to more people discovering us and donating).

In fact, I think if individual authors asked people to donate to DC instead of to them -- it gives a misleadingly low impression of that programmer's contribution to the site, because even though someone might not be compelled to donate purely for 1 particular program, it's the totality of the site that may inspire people to donate -- and so ever little piece makes a difference.

In short:
We're thrilled to have you as part of the site and making it a funner place to hang out by sharing your stuff.  A link to DC forum from your software/readme would be great so that people who like your software stop by here to discuss it.  Other than that, just have fun and make yourself at home.

Oh and keep your eye open for things like the NANY (New Apps for the New Year) event we have here - since it's great to have more people participating in that.

ahhhh --- thats a big clue for me!!
thank you for the hint -- i will see if i can fix that.
19162
If I understand the idea properly you could use it to check mail with command-line e-mail-programs (which I take for granted can be found somewhere).

no, nothing is to stop you from doing that normally if all you are doing is launching a commandline tool.

the point of this feature is to have menus in LBC which are generated on the fly behind the scenes, based on some information that a commandline tool can generate (like a list of recently opened files on the computer).
19163
UPDATE:

phitsc just sent me already a working MRU commandline tool -- and it works GREAT in LBC.. a very cool addition, that makes all the work worthwhile.

This should be easy.

So first way, using latest version, you should be able to just add the link to the Open Office using an absolute path on the usb stick, and LBC should auto-correct it when it isnt found at that location at its configured absolute location when drive letter changes.  assuming you dont have it in exact same directory on your real hard drive that should work fine.

But, assuming you are morally opposed to that, you should be able to configure the program path using %APPDIR%, so:
if OO3 is a subdirectory of LBC then:
  • %APPDIR%\OO3\openoffice.exe

Or if OO3 is not a subdirectory you can use the %APPDRIVE% field to get the current drive letter where LBC is running from:
  • %APPDRIVE%\OO3\openoffice.exe

See if that works -- let me know if not.  Not many people are using it in portable mode yet, so there may be things that "should" work, but don't.
19165
Another use would be if someone makes a nice commandline tool to generate control panel links -- could be an improvement over current method.
19166
I also always turn off system restore -- as far as im concerned turning it off has two benefits: one is i save space, the other is it keeps me from ever losing my mind and trying to do a restore using this method, which im convinced is nothing but trouble.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: LaunchBar Commander Beta with "Tab Nodes"
« Last post by mouser on June 17, 2009, 08:22 AM »
i see you are doing something i didnt think of, which is to not use images in your Tab Node, so that it switches between the Text description of each of your submenu modes.  Nice idea.
Maybe ill make an option for this so users can easily try that idea.
19168
actually i thought of a couple more uses:

this new feature can create a subtree menu dynamically from a text file as well as a commandline exe.

you could use this for example to create a "addons" for LBC, that combined a tool and a .txt menu structure, that would give people a pre-configured set of tools/commands.  e.g. you could take nirsoft's nircmd and bundle it with a .txt menu file that users could just copy someplace and add to LBC, which would then give them a big menu tree of commands without having to do any configuration.
19169
aside from the MRU stuff, which seems a perfect and valuable use.. can anyone even think of other uses for this function.. i'm having a hard time..
19170
im going to upload a version today with the feature -- let's see who can be the first to put it to actual use.

you cant actually close it to nothingness -- you have to set it for one of the children submenus.  But you can create an empty child submenu.
19172
I've asked phitsc about making his amazing MRU plugin for farr into a commandline tool that LBC could use to make nice submenu of MRU docs.

I just hope at least one person on planet uses the feature, and i won't feel like a total idiot.
19173
Ok ok, with all of the replies i've gotten to this thread begging for this feature i broke down and implemented it.

General Software Discussion / Re: WP plugins: donating is not the solution
« Last post by mouser on June 16, 2009, 09:13 AM »
People sometimes ask me about donations as a "business model".. I always have to tell them: it just doesn't work.  If you're goal is to create a business, you simply can't do it with donations.

Except in the very rare case (i think we are talking about way less than 0.5%), people won't donate to support a software project if they don't feel compelled to.

Note: That doesn't mean it's not worth doing!  I think we've proved on DC that a donation-based approach can be very successful in terms of supporting a community, bringing people together, helping to offset the time spent by some members, and helping to fund stuff that otherwise wouldn't be affordable.  Plus it can be fun once you come to terms with the fact that you have to ask for help from others.

It's just that if you're primary interest is in creating a profitable business, it's a non-starter.

I plug this thing all the times, but you can read more in my article about the first year of DC here.
