Living Room / They drew first blood, sir!

I have a feeling this is going to get ugly...

Has Microsoft fired its first shot in the patent war against Linux?
While Microsoft will vehemently deny it, a lawsuit filed earlier this week by Microsoft against in-car GPS maker TomTom represents the first shot fired  in the Microsoft vs. free software war.

General Software Discussion / Why Windows must go open source
« Last post by Edvard on February 26, 2009, 03:28 PM »
InformationWeek's Charlie Babcock says what many others have wanted and tried and some never dared to say over the years, but then again, they're not IW editors...

To maintain its developer ecosystem and protect its apps business, Microsoft has no choice but to loosen its grip on the Windows source code and drive down costs...
...
But people are wrong when they assume that Microsoft will never move Windows down the open source path. To neutralize the advantages of Linux and other open source competitors, Microsoft will have to make Windows more like them. If it doesn't, it risks losing the 6-million-plus developer base that's made the Windows platform great. Microsoft may not want to open up Windows to the world, but it will. Indeed, it must.

Me, I'm not convinced. Sure, there would be nice things about such developments (and there have been...) but for the bulk of Microsoft to become just another SourceForge project?
Never. Ever.

from another place I kinda forgot...

The folks at OOoNinja have posted a round-up of all the shiny new bits of OpenOfffice 3.1
Looks quite cool

OpenOffice.org 3.1 is 65 days away, and developers are finishing up more than 1000 issues targeted for this Microsoft Office killer packing an army of new features, enhancements, and bug fixes.

What's wrong with clunky?

When it comes to Linux, some people walk the walk - others waddle the waddle. ;)

Living Room / What if Google ate it's own dog food?
« Last post by Edvard on February 19, 2009, 02:07 PM »
Clever.

"Web developers increasingly grow weary of having to put so much effort into designing their sites according to the whims of the Google search engine. When the most important thing is 'getting indexed' it is increasingly difficult for web site designers to offer the simple, uncluttered user experience they'd like to. Reminiscent of the famed what if Microsoft designed the iPod box here is a humorous look at what would happen to that famed, clean, uncluttered look if Google had to design for the Google Search Engine."

Living Room / Re: 10 coolest alarm clocks
« Last post by Edvard on February 19, 2009, 11:55 AM »
I had to resurrect this old thread because of this:
Looking to put a little excitement into your morning routine? Rather than simply slapping your alarm clock to turn it off, do you want to up the stakes a little bit? Say hello to this crazy new alarm clock from Bandai in Japan.

The "Gun O'Clock" comes with an infrared gun. When the alarm goes off, a target will pop up from the top. In order to turn the shrill, beeping alarm off (which is coupled with a voice saying "Come on!"), you need to hit the bullseye. It's the perfect excuse to start sleeping with a gun under your pillow that has no chance of accidentally killing you in your sleep. It'll be available in Japan starting at the end of October for $34.

Image Manager Shootout / Re: Xnview vs. Irfan View
« Last post by Edvard on February 18, 2009, 11:50 AM »
I've switched to XnView entirely.
The background color for the 'cut' function is now settable, which was a bit of a pain before, and the print dialog is WAY beefed up from the version I was using.
It's still a little slow generating thumbnails of pdf files when you're viewing the contents of a folder and there are pdf's in there, but it's gotten faster as of a version or two back.

On the downside, the Linux version is a horrible-looking feature-less pile of mess that makes me wonder if it's even the same program.

Where I work almost everybody sees Perl as a "dead" project.

Not when I keep seeing almost 30-to-1 ratio in Perl vs. Python jobs in the classifieds and IIRC, it's almost neck-and-neck with C++ and PHP coder jobs.

Ok, now they are just going ahead and shooting themselves right square in the foot.
Sure, software makers and music labels have rights to soak you for whatever you're willing to pay, but this is really going farther than is really necessary. If anything kills DRM, things like this will.

I don't know if it's a Windows-only thing or if Linux has the same problems, but I have accidentally done this twice and hilarity ensued...

LOL!!

Is that counting the costs of getting stitches at the emergency room?
I admit, some mornings were, um, redder than others, especially when I first started out.
The only bad cut I got was on my thumb, not my face, and it was because I wasn't paying attention. As I said earlier, once you learn how to use it properly, it's a very nice shave.
If you're game, look up a few videos on the subject. You may be surprised.

Nice implement, Tomos...
This was my baby until it broke:

dovosolingen.jpg

It was a birthday present, (as was a pewter mug and brush set from my dear lovely wife  :-* ) so I didn't spend any on it, although you can find them new for $60-$100 USD. Over the course of a year, you'd break about even, and you get to shave in style!

The Windows version is here: http://gnuwin32.sour...et/packages/tiff.htm

I've used it on occasion and it works well.
