General Software Discussion / svchost /k netsvcs [Problem on Win.7]
« Last post by tomos on May 29, 2016, 09:02 AM »
In the last few months, I've had problems with svchost /k netsvcs hogging CPU & ram (plus lots of page file activity) on three Windows 7 (x64) machines - two mine, the third a friends that I sort-of look after. Problem lasted over a month, but my two were eventually sorted out via windows updates (I dont know which update fixed them -- I only install 'security' updates since this problem, so it was one of them).

EDIT//
To summarise current status of problem:
1) Machine #1 (friend's) has major problem with svchost constantly hogging one full core (dual-core CPU) and windows update not working
2) Machine #2 (mine) has occasional problem with svchost hogging one full core -- temporarily solved by rebooting, [may yet be solved by windows update, will have to give it some time to see]
//

My friends machine (which older) broke from overheating (I presume related to this), and was repaired. It still has the same problem, with the paging file being used a lot too. I am now unable to update it. I believe the problem is related to window update.

Here's a screenshot from my laptop (looked/looks the same in other machines):

Screenshot - 2016-03-08 , 22_59_15.png

I found this post (forums.techguy.org) from a year ago (previous post also possibly relevant)
Hey guys, i too had this problem, i did consult various forums before ending up on microsoft support agents, i got the information that this was indeed a known bug that bundled itself up on windows 7 and probably 8 win(management) framework 3.0 & ^ update and involves handle leakages{ more casual : resource/memory leakage} so that this "super process" svchost(ntsvc) only acquires memory and fails to let go once done using it, there is presently a fix to this issue inform of a hotfix that you download and install onto your computer, it did help but afterwards you gotta be careful with you updates or the bug will show up again.

have a look at this link : microsoft community.
https://support.micr...com/en-us/kb/2889748

I did risk applying the hotfix because they said it should only be applied by those who are greatly affected by the bug, it worked like a charm and now this "process" only uses {3-5}% of my R.A.M while previously it could use upto 70% memory.

Last updates were installed 2016.03.23
The problem machine is unable to get windows updates. I get offered one update (which I believe was on offer but not installed last time updates were checked on April 11th). It's unable to download it (it tries but always 0 from 0mb). Internet connection is working fine.

=> so I decided to try the KB2889748 mentioned in the quote above
Guess what it does before installing -- it checks windows updates (via a small dialogue box) and also cannot get any results. So it goes nowhere. I just closed the machine down.

I'm hoping someone here will have some sort of creative idea here -- or have lately experienced the same/similar problem.
If I've forgotten any relevant/important info - please ask, and I'll add it.
TIA

« Last post by tomos on May 28, 2016, 03:26 AM »
The ZIP drives were a fleeting, ephemeral technology - soon obsolete. From my perspective, the iomega drive and disks  were a waste of money. I think I learned a lesson there.    >:(

yes, I have a memory of that one costing me around the £100 mark. Prior to that I was using one of the 100MB drives in the office -- they were much bigger (and more solid build). Luckily the one above has USB as well as the parallel port. And the disks weren't cheap either. But I did get good use out of them for a few years.
I had transferred all zip-disks to desktop and other backup years ago. (The disk above was from someone else.)

« Last post by tomos on May 27, 2016, 02:01 PM »
I had to get something off of a zip-drive disc today, so I had to dig out my Iomega 250 Zip Drive.
Hearing that whine and click is still so familiar. I stopped really using them at least ten years ago (but I'd say it was longer back).

IIRC, at the time I bought it, the 250MB drive was a recent big advance over the older 100MB drive/disks. The discs actually look really like the floppys, just fatter (this disc is one of the 100MB ones).

So, for nostalgia's sake, here's a few images

Here's one I just discovered today:

You can click and drag icons in the tray to rearrange them or move them to/from the little ^ icon to easily make it always show or hide:

oohh, that's nice

Do you use the numeric keypad?  What about the function keys?  There are some affordable options on amazon that are mechanical, and would be useable.  I found that recently, evaluating my own typing.  I use the arrows and function keys and page up/page down and such pretty rarely.  so I picked up a keyboard that didn't have those- a Pok3er with cherry browns (and tried clears too).  It's a bit more expensive than what you're talking about, but the Qisan keyboards are pretty nice for the price.

http://www.amazon.co...cforce/dp/B01872MCIA

The browns are more for some reason... the blacks and blues are a lot less.  On this particular keyboard, you're giving up the function row (which can be accessed using the function key) and the numeric keypad.  It's a good tradeoff.

F-keys I need
Pagup/down, home/end and arrow keys -- I use all of them a lot
Numberpad I dont need

But note I'm limited by wanting a qwertz (German) keyboard, which has one key more than the US keyboard. Many brands (including Qisan AFAICS) dont make the qwertz layout.
I'm quite happy with this one so far -- I've written QPAD about the 'bar' -- and bought it locally anyways, so can bring it back for a replacement.

I'm just after getting myself a mechanical keyboard with Cherry brown switches:
QPAD K50 (de link) -- it's the cheaper/basic version of this one (UK link; MK50 has no backlighting, not sure what else is missing -- I only need a keyboard!)

  • Keyboard seems to be solid and well made
  • the brown switches are very easy to use which is what I wanted/needed
  • I dont like the labeling on the keys, but that's not so important (they have a pretty tacky 'Q' logo which is printed on the middle of the spacebar, and also used on the 'Q' key; dont like the way multiple options are shown on the keys -- they're not easy to read at a glance)

Mechanical keyboards are higher than other keyboards, and they all seem to be higher at the back too.
When typing, I avoid bending my wrists -- I dont rest my wrists on anything: my hand, wrist, and arm make a straight line. When using Ctrl+Shift together with one finger (e.g. when selecting text by the word) I'm forced to drop my wrist due to the upwards slope of the keyboard.
I haven't drawn yet using the keyboard (for shortcuts), the height may be a problem there -- we'll see.

It's a joy to type with. I still have to get used to it -- keep making typos...
testing the keys, I see it wont type a vertical bar "|" :(

Includes Mrs. Miller's strategy for reading War and Peace, "the only book you'll ever need:"
Spoiler
Five-point plan for anyone thinking of taking this book on:

1. Read fifty pages a day. N.B. the Millers both commute by rail, so have a fair amount of dead time to fill][/i]
2. Utilise the list of principal characters at the front.
3. Pay attention! Soon you'll discover that Tolstoy is doing the heavy lifting for you.
4. Don't fret if you are not enjoying the Peace, there will be a bit of War along shortly.
5. When you get to the end, read it again.

Preferred translations, in order:
(1) Louise and Aylmer Maude
(2) Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky
(3) Rosemary Edmonds
Avoid Constance Garnet - "prissy"

#4 in spoiler :D

I didn't know this. I wont post here anymore ...

You can post here... that's not what Tom was saying.  Just post things that you're reading and you think worthy after reading to share.  We don't want just a list of books- what we'd like is a list of books that have been experienced and are being recommended based on that. :)

ah yes, thanks for saying that wraith

what we'd like is a list of books that have been experienced and are being recommended based on that. :)

I always like to see a comment myself, be it positive or negative -- or just giving us some more info

I found it tiresome: I gave up at question #40 (no idea how long it goes on for).
Maybe it thinks if it tells everyone they have phd's, they might click on a few ads and buy stuff ;-)

Forget everything I thought I wanted. Everyone's help was greatly appreciated, but I have made the decision that my website will be a custom build of the danbooru image board software.

I'm a hoarder, but life tends to impose limits, so I've also come around to the idea of photographing stuff and throwing it away. I rarely regret (not yet anyways) having thrown anything away. It's nice to have the image then -- as you say, it triggers memories.

So, you want to catalogue everything else as well :-)
I like the idea of cataloging things -- I got as far as cataloging cataloging software, but not much further :D

I'm curious -- how would that be done on a website? Note, while I know basic html, I'm no a coder, nor particularly knowledgeable here -- so I guess I'm looking for an overview.

That was a really beautiful and touching eulogy, mouser. Thank you for sharing that with us.

I have not been able to download a viable zip file from http://skwire.dcmemb...om/fp/?page=sweather. I have been trying for the last 2 days.

could be that the download is saved in the browser cache, so you keep getting the same corrupted download.
Try with a different browser, or try clearing the cache.
