I just  found another small tool named pyExifToolGUI
I need to check it out.
At first sight:
-the window can not be resized
-a little too few details are displayed at the same time, i.e. one needs to scroll up and down a lot (because of using grid lines I suppose)
-in case of loading a folder, then the maximum thumbnails displayed is 10
[...]
no development since 2013.

appears to be being actively developed (?):

PopUp Wisdom / PopUpWisdom- can I comment out quotes in books?

Instead of deleting a quote in a quote-book,
can I simply comment it out?

PopUp Wisdom / Re: [PopUpWisdom] Cant modify quote files w. install version
« Last post by tomos on June 10, 2016, 05:13 AM »
Solution here is to move to the portable version.

If you wish to transfer your settings [see edit below]

  • disable 'Start with Windows' in preferences (of your installed PopupWisdom)
  • exit
  • download portable version, unzip and 'install' wherever
  • start portable version and make any changes in the preferences (doesnt matter what: will be replaced)
  • [step #4 causes a PopUpWisdom.ini file to be created in the portable folder]
  • replace the PopUpWisdom.ini file in the portable folder with the one in My Documents:  ...\My Documents\DonationCoder\PopupWisdom\PopUpWisdom.ini
  • start the portable PopUpWisdom.exe
  • in preferences reactivate 'Start with Windows' (if you want)

EDIT// in retrospect, it would be easier to simply copy the ini file into the portable folder without modifying the preferences first (i.e. leave out step #4!)

FWIW I've used onedrive to backup photos from a Windows 8.1 phone and accessed the backup from a Windows 7 machine (was very slow to backup but I'm not sure whether I can blame onedrive for that). Phone OS obviously works different to a full OS so cant help you otherwise.

Did you try searching?
Your questions seem fairly basic, I would presume you'ld easily find the answer.

Wouldnt the easiest thing be to find a free-to-use template online that is roughly the layout and style you want -
then find an easy to use html editor with live (or on refresh) preview and edit. Maybe an editor with something like the UI used here for posting replies:

Irish People Asked To Explain What They Mean By “Sure You Know Yourself”

May 31, 2016 - BREAKING NEWS

THE time when an Irish person could both simultaneously dodge a question and answer it may be coming to a close, as an international court ruling has demanded an explanation for the expression “sure you know yourself”.

For decades, people from all across Ireland have skillfully steered conversations to their liking by simply responding to any question or query with the catch-all phrase.
[..]

However, overuse of the phrase in recent times has led to a UN ruling that either the statement be explained in full, or struck from use altogether.
[..]

The Irish government is to fight the ruling, stating that it is every Irish citizen’s right to be able to tell you to mind your own f*cking business without sounding rude.

This one gave me a bit of a laugh. Adding to my appreciation:
spam link is removed, but was broken anyways due to doubling 'http' and using ';' in the link instead of ':'
Link was for some business directory

It's often said tots spend more time playing with the wrapping than the present itself. When Martin mentioned this on his TV show, he was inundated with people tweeting and emailing photos of their young children having great fun with [url=http://http;//www. . .] cardboard [/url] boxes they'd been given for Christmas. See Martin's blog for the pics.

But what if Zen's complete awareness is simply a total immersion in - and therefore a mastery of - the game??

nice twist :D

@tomos: Sorry, I think I must have posted that a bit too late to be of use. It seemed to be still on offer when I made the post, and I couldn't see when it was due to finish. (Was in a bit of a hurry.)

not at all, I *thought* it was still active when I looked first, but not sure now.

Like the sound of something that can cope well with gmail labels etc.
For email,
I would *love* something like gmail's inbox web UI where you can drag a mail to a different tab (e.g. 'Forums') and it will ask: do you want all emails from xyz to be labelled/tagged as 'Forum'. Filters on the fly, even if only for a limited number of options (as per currently in gmail).

Sounds very interesting -- but I see only one price on their website.
Which is confusing...

Posters at bdj talk are also confused about this, being sent to a second page to purchase the gmail plugin.

EDIT// after skimming all the comments
  • offer is over
  • gmail plugin is $15 extra

@Everdesk app sounds very interesting, but not having all prices clearly visible on your website does not make for a good feeling :-(

General Software Discussion / Re: svchost /k netsvcs [Problem on Win.7]
« Last post by tomos on May 30, 2016, 12:22 PM »
Thanks Mike for that info.
Thanks April for clarifying.

I disabled win update after rebooting friends machine (the problem one). Then manually got it to search for updates:
straight away the 50%CPU usage plus crazy page file use + no updates found.

So I'm going to turn off win update completely. I see them often enough to check windows update manually.

Re changing IP address possibly helping access updates:
I've been testing it in my place, will report back if it works in their place when I give it back.

[Thankfully my own machine seems to be fine]

^ very interesting, thanks app
Wont get back to it till tuesday now probably -- I had already reduced windows update  to just notify -- will now turn off completely.
(So, I do end up following your advice miles :-)

A bit wary of not having an up-to-date machine for a basic user -- but it's better than a burnt out machine :)

EDIT// my own machine seems to be ok now -- just checked for updates, and it didnt arouse the CPU hogger.
Will sleep.

Do you know what it is running when svchost hogs the core?  Svchost is basically a loader to load and run a service.  When some service hogs the machine, like Windows Media Player scouring all your files looking for media files to share, it can show up as svchost.exe or as explorer opening and closing every file on the system.

Next time it hogs resources see which service is associated in task manager.

it's not clear/shown which service is acting up (or do you know a way?)
Here some images (first and last probably of most help)

this last  one shows thread that's hogging the CPU but doesnt seem very informative (?)

Is there the possibility of restoring via a backup image to a state when the problem was in abeyance?

I'm not willing to avoid windows updates (on either machine), so not sure if that would help.

To summarise status of problem:
1) Machine #1 (friend's) has major problem with svchost constantly hogging one full core (dual-core CPU) and windows update not working.
2) Machine #2 (mine) has occasional problem  with svchost hogging one full core -- temporarily solved by rebooting, [may yet be solved by windows update]

I rebooted my laptop and it very well behaved. Will see if it comes back again. Problem described in quote in OP as it not letting memory/CPU go once it starts using it. Which makes sense to me. There's also updates available for this machine -- they're downloading as I write . . .

You didn't mention it, so I "have to" ask: Can't a 'phone home' process be avoided, simply by unplugging the machine, before installing?

I suspect it will still hang trying to connect -- but I will try it

Same problem is back on my laptop :( i.e. now currently on two unrelated machines.
FWIW I'm pretty sure this not a virus. It's just a hunch that it's to do with windows updates -- but I do suspect it is ;-)

I'll do a proper backup of this OS etc and then try installing the KB mentioned above.
