General Software Discussion / Re: Any good free OCR software?
« Last post by Darwin on November 12, 2008, 04:00 PM »
Anyone any idea where "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" tool has gone in Office 2007?

In 2003 it was under the Office Tools menu in the Progams menu but it doesn't seem to be there in 2007?

Microsoft Office Imaging is a optional installation. In Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs, select Microsoft Office and click on Change and then
select add features. You will find Office Imaging under Tools.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Synergy: Sharing your keyboard and mouse
« Last post by Darwin on November 12, 2008, 11:41 AM »
I like Synergy but... I find that it simply stops working randomly over my wireless home network. All three computers (XP, Vista, Tiger) remain connected to the network and retain internet access but I'll have to jump through a lot of hoops to get the mouse and keyboard to share again. To be honest this is worst between XP and Vista and rarely happens with the Mac. I suspect that is an issue with networking XP and Vista as I also have a difficult time sharing folders between the two and have read numerous posts on the net about issues related to this...

General Software Discussion / Re: Process Manager for Windows - use fewer clicks

@Darwin
(5MB RAM when minimized to tray  )
Did you mean that for "Process Manager for windows" or for "Anvir Task Manager Pro" ?
I downloaded both  "Process Manager for Windows" is always around 1 MB.

Sorry - Anvir Task Manager Pro sits at around 5MB when idle in my tray. OK *was* sitting at around 5MB... it's up to 11MB at the moment, but it did just throttle back SpySweeper's CPU usage. I don't find it too heavy, really, considering all the functionality that it provides.

Ha! You're right, Deozaan - I learned it as 22/7 as well. I'd forgotten about that  :o

Not a formula for Shell oil, but one that if followed may yield a cheaper and altogether more cozy way of heating your home:

62 O2 (g) + C52H84O22 (s) --> 52 CO2 (g) + 42 H2O (g)

I've just realised that DM2 offers some of this functionality (allows you to set process priority but does not offer a "kill" feature) as well - so there's another free option. Note, too, that Anvir Task Manager Pro also lacks the "kill" process option from the context menu... so it's functionality is identical in this regard as that of DM2.

I'm impressed - I've already had a personal reply from David Carpenter regarding my suggestion about integrating Everyting into the shell. He says it's already on his list of things to do

Obviously not freeware, and a bit heavier (@5MB RAM when minimized to tray), but Anvir Task Manager Pro adds the same functionality to the context menu of the taskbar and to the title bar of any application.

Process Manager for Windows looks nice and the price is right

Thanks for sharing it with us, Lanux!

Hell, all this time I thought Cody was a turducken. Darwin described such a species from the Beagle way back, no?

I'd be very interested in Actual Tools solution - too bad it is not available as a stand-alone product. AFAICT, most of the features that are available in Windows Manager are also available in stand-alone versions. As Windows Manager 5.2 came out October 14 and this was a brand new feature with that release, I wonder if a stand-alone version will be released in the future?
1814
An issue I have (caveat - haven't tried any of the solutions posted here) is that I have a 19" widescreen LCD external monitor attached to notebook with a 15.4" monitor. If I maximize my webbrowser on the external monitor it extends into my notebook monitor. I suspect that this is an issue with the browser (Maxthon 2) as the other software that I have tried maximize just fine on either monitor.

VzTa - I posted a link to the same article in a different thread earlier today: https://www.donation....msg137790#msg137790. Are you affiliated with Actual Tools?

Crud. I like the Pro version of Multi-Monitor Taskbar (the free version doesn't feature a Vista skin) but don't think I'd really like the free version... and I can't see paying $28 for it. Sigh... I guess I'll run the trial for a bit and see if it's a "must have" application. Too bad it doesn't just adopt the skin in use on the system.
1816
The question that doesn't seem clear is what happens to 2008 32-bit users? Does R2 automatically update them to 64-bit or are they simly dead in the water.

I think they'll be dead in the water WRT updating - they'll be frozen at the last version of Windows Server 2008 32-bit. I wonder if Microsoft will continue to provide security updates for 32-bit versions, though? Surely they'd have to... the only *penalty* is going to be access to the updates/new features in R2 and future updates/new features. So you could say that the feature set will be fixed. Just rambling...

even the coin in the mouth is sort of appropriate (as a proxy for an olive branch!).

Now there's a new twist, greed is good meets world peace.

;D Hadn't thought about it like that!

Thanks for the heads up, Carol. I just installed Windows Server 2008 64-bit on my notebook and will watch out for the update to R2

Actual Windows Manager features a multimonitor taskbar with the ability to have the Start Menu on each monitor's taskbar... but it'll cost 'ya!

EDIT: dug a bit deeper - Actual Windows Manager is $49.95.

Ha, ha - I've just downloaded and installed the trial for the Pro version myself and the one niggle for me is... the absence of the Start button on the second (and subsequent) taskbars  ;D

You could try Oscar's Multi-Monitor taskBar. Haven't tried it myself, but am very tempted to, as this is a feature that I've been looking for as well. Thus, thanks for forcing me out of my apathy to go looking!

... I think now it´s the right time to continue the disc-cataloger-list (there are some new entries) and my own cataloger. I have some operations from next week on and after this I have to stay 3-4 months in bed.  :)

Hope everything goes OK, Crush. I'll look forward to the updates to the cataloguer thread  and hold a good thought about those operations.

I didn't think to when I wrote about windows integration, but has anyone invited David Carpenter, the developer, to drop in here?
