Done and sorted... and I STILL have access to a download for the latest version of Do-Organizer 3 (version 3.2)  :o Right... now that I have a responsive support team, I'll e-mail them again and let them know!

No worries. I sent off a note to support last night. Haven't had a response BUT I re-activated my forum id and got a response saying:

We verified your account status and realized that the doO and TNP accounts were deleted simultaneously by mistake. Please send us your registration info as per email you received when ordering TexNotes Pro and we will re-activate your account. We apologize for the inconveniance.

Which was nice - they're paying attention!

It's all good...

A year ago I never would have believed that I'd be siding with Josh on the Vista front... I'm four months into my "life with Vista" (when I bought my Vista notebook I had every intention of downgrading to XP Pro) and have had no troubles with it. Pretty happy, overall '

FWIW I have updates set to alert me when they are available but not to download or install them. I've had XP set up to do this for four years and had Win2k set up to do the same for four years prior to that. Usually just let it go ahead and install the updates unless it's a feature I don't use/have enabled or an offer to update drivers - I research those and download from the OEM.

Doublewitt - you're correct, I did request and receive a refund for Do-Organizer. I did not request, and thus did not receive, a refund for TexNotes Pro and my log-in information (up until yesterday) consisted of the e-mail address that I registered TexNotes through and my TexNotes Pro serial number. I don't expect to be able to login and download Do-Organizer, but I feel that I should still be able to access TexNotes Pro. If you and others (including Bo) are able to log-in with your old log-in details, it appears that you are right and there is no point in waiting a week. However, the account should not be closed and I'll be contacting support.

No problems with checking in and downloading new version.

No joy for me. I kid you not, I logged in yesterday successfully (old site) but today, no luck whatsoever. TexNotes hasn't been updated anyway... but still! I'm going to give them a week or so to iron out the wrinkles and see what happens.

Hi Bo - thanks! Not working for me, though...  :( I am trying to login via the "Login" link at the upper right of the Home page (next to search). I enter my login details and consistently get a  "Password not correct for the user. please retry!!" error. I've checked the e-mail that I received in 2006 to confirm that the details that I am entering are correct, but no joy. I've also tried a random password and my original username (e-mail addy) and am then told that the username is invalid  :(

would be happy to forgo a free update and pay a reasonable amount of money ($150-200) for Windows 7 if it was secure, worked correctly, and Microsoft would stop stonewalling when there were problems being reported.

Yes! This is more or less in line with my "MS should emulate Apple's licensing scheme" rant from earlier... My issue with Vista is not that it doesn't work (I love it), but that there are far too many versions and that they are too expensive. I'm also annoyed that to get from Win XP Pro 32-bit or Vista Home Premium 32-bit to a 64-bit version of Vista I'm expected to pay full price! WTF?! But I digress.

My dream is that Micorsoft produce and market a single version of WIndows 7 that acts will upgrade older Windows installs and install the full version on new equipment and that ships with all functionality that is available at the user's discretion. Then, charge a realisitc price for it. The MSRP on OS X is $179 for a single licence and $199 for a family licence (5 or 8 installations, I forget) and it's available at cheaper rates from 3rd party vendors. The DVD set that you get is the same for everyone... Nirvana.

Update: if you were registered with GemX in the past, your username/password are no longer valid. As far as I can tell, you'll need to contact support to have your login details updated.

Strange - I checked the site yesterday and it was still the old one... Wake up this morning, read your post, navigate to Gemx.com and I don't recognise it! Thanks for heads up - I'm off to read through it now.

Oh yeah, about the free upgrade... I guess free doesn't make a lot of sense, but a $50 "we want you to buy this right away" discounted price sounds like a good idea to me.

No worries, Jim! My fault, really, as I didn't give the background - Andrea's original note DID read as you related it here; he edited it today, noting that the original wording was a typo  8)

Just to note, Andrea has clarified the licencing terms on the beta forum (no public access):

I'm sorry there has been some confusion.
Upgrade to v.2.0 costs 24.95$ and includes 12 months of free upgrades.
The license will not expire after 12 months. Hope this is clear. After 12 months you just don't get any new upgrades but of course you can continue using the license you have.
The software is licenses per user/per computer and there's an option to use Direct Access on up to three PCs for 9.95$ more.

Emphasis mine.

it certainly makes me extremely gun shy about purchasing expensive software from small developers. There are no guarantees at all!

true, I worry about that at times, unfortunately there's no guarantees from big companies either ...

EDIT/ apart from (maybe) the guarantee of bloat and (probably) the guarantee of slow or no response to your queries and/or bug reports  :( ;D

Witness the GemX debacle...

My shredder recently got totally clogged and I had to take it to pieces to clear it. It was an interesting experience - undo all the screws and lift the top off - so far so good and then a whole pile of little bit fell on the floor including 2 x 3 inch metal bars - took me ages to work out they were spacers to provide support and stop the lid from deforming !! Good luck with the 3D jigsaw (got there in the end and works like new )

That's pretty much EXACTLY what I resorted to... TWICE! Had a major clean out session today - shredded 20 years of documents that "we just had to keep". Er, not... It's all good now  ;D

But well done folks, mine all ended up unpublishable  :-[

Interesting... I moved from WAP-PSK TKIP encryption to WAP2-PSK AES on my home network and Synergy is still connected after over 8 hours and numerous bouts of the computers going into standby

May just be a coincidence, but it's never been this stable

I bet that was a typo and he meant to say "of course you can continue...". I would reply to the email and ask for a clarification.
:o

My thinking exactly - don't know how I managed NOT to note that in my previous missive. Too busy trying to unclog my confetti shredder! I can multi-task but only so much...

I proudly present DC's first co-authored work of poetry (see this thread to see its development):

He went out to sea...

And caught a King penguin, to pluck it.

Just to summarize our jointly authored limerick, which is now complete. I made one edit in the interest of continuity (I hope no one minds). So, to the best of my knowledge, I proudly present DC's first co-authored work of poetry:

There once was a man from Nantuckett
Who kept all of his change in a bucket?
he went out to sea...
When he turned twenty-three...
and caught a King penguin, to pluck it.

I think that this deserves a thread of its own...

Aargh! So which is it?! The bit you highlighted contradicts the first bit...  :o

Hi D-- welcome to DC I read your blog post with interest and really enjoyed the read. I'm just starting to experiment with Linux seriously for the first time (I've had an install hanging around, on and off for ten years, but only to dabble), so  I read your reflections on the whole immersion experience with great interest!

I'm not going to even try it. -- What if like it?

Again, sums up my thinking completely!  :)

@Jim - I think that as long as you have the installer for a 1.x version of DirectAccess backed up you'll be to go. My reading of this part of the sentence from the announcement e-mail:

...access to any version (minor or major) of Direct Access that is released during your coverage period

is that you have access to updates and upgrades from whatever version is current at the start of your subscription. 1.x versions won't be covered by this EULA as note the "bit" that I have highlighted.

I wasn't too interested in paying for an upgrade to 2.0 to start with, but with the more restrictive licensing, I doubt even some sort of stupid impulse will get me to buy (stupid impulses probably drive most of my software purchases).

;D Hear, hear - my sentiments exactly (right down to the stupid impulses driving software purchases)

Hmmm... I've been pondering posting about this myself, but wanted to wait and see what happens when version 2 goes "live". I'm not happy with the switch to a subscription scheme, either. I'm quite distrubed by the assertion that current users will not have the option to simply stick with version 1.x. I'm not sure that Andrea will be able to enforce this - version 1.x of DirectAccess wasn't sold with an expiring licence... was it? I don't have it installed so can't check, but I'd be very surprised if there is anything in its EULA that says that after a certain point a subscription fee must be paid for ongoing use!
