General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 20, 2015, 10:25 AM »
According to this GHacks Article Windows 10 Home Users will have to agree to forced automatic updates when clicking the EULA on reboot.

At the end of the article it goes on to say that at the moment(as in RTM build 10240) it is still possible to set the Windows Update Service to Disabled.

I have a feeling that disable-ability will either be removed or bypassed.
It is for your protection.  :)

Maybe Deozaan is all three options...as these do not exclude each other.

But I guess I don't want to deal a masochistic lawyer with a (sick) sense of humor... :P

Especially not if he charges $500/hr.  :)

Anyone got a link to the EULA? I got careless and clicked through it without reading it, thinking it was the same one I accepted when I signed up for the Windows Insider Program.

I thought the whole idea was that nobody could read those.  Are you an attorney, masochist, or joking?  :)

You Probably Can’t Jailbreak This Tablet Made For America’s Prisoners

If people find out there is free WiFi they may be breaking into jail.  :)

The tablet has a Calendar!?

When you double click on a day you get that big bold X across it for time served.  :)

thank you for the idea to go and buy a more powerful PC, kyrathaba

I have been hesitating for a very long time, not knowing what I needed the most, a new smart phone, a new television, or a new PC - the money merely is to just one item. You just made me make up my mind!

And then again; I waited this long, maybe I can wait a little longer?

I think what I would like to get is an 8 core BluRay reader/wrtier machine with 64 GB ram and a bunch of SSDs.  Windows 7 x64 SP1 preloaded, but custom.  No bloat/trial/crap ware or AVs installed.  4kHD with super high performance GPU and monitors. Then I would hook it up to a gigabit internet and figure out what to do with it later.  :)

The 101240 OOBE has a whole new feel (and EULA Acceptance) to it.

...I haven't made it to the desktop yet.

Initial reaction on Ten Forums seems very positive.  I gave up on trying them out because a VM of W10 takes me about 2 hours of messing with it at the "all but crashing" super slow stage, to get it to the stable stage.  At that it is still only about 70% as fast as a W7 x64 VM.  Just too slow to diddle with on the Lappy.

I found this link which says it's normal for build 10240 to not show the build watermark,

Yeah, on Ten Forums posters point to two pieces of evidence that 10240 is an RTM candidate.
1) No watermark
2) the build number is evenly divisible by 16

I never heard the bit about divide by 16 before.  :)

That sounds like a great feature idea to add to my Process Piglet tool  I'll add it asap.

Oh, didn't even know about that one. :)

Me either.  Looking forward to the update.

...forgive my whining, but do I really have to read an entire book, before using this one? Does it work out of the box?  :tellme:

That would be cheating.  :)

Damn if I can remember where I read it, but I got the impression that the Insider Program was not per se ending. Supposedly due to the - new and ominous - subscription based nature of Windows the brave few idiots were going to be able to test the new update wave(s) as they came about for the rest of the folks what use Winders..

I remember something to that effect myself.  The best source of news I know of is the News subforum of ten forums.

Most stuff is going on there until W10 is actually released.  Then the other subforums will be purged of whatever accumulates in the interim and real problems will be posted.

@IainB  the one I wish FF had is Vanilla Cookie Manager for chrome.  You block everything then use the Vanilla Cookie Button if you wish to allow a site.  It is effortless.  My SAS scans went down to nearly 0 tracking cookies when I was using chrome as default with this extension.

Privacy Badger worked for me for a very short time.  Then all of a sudden it was like it wasn't even installed.  It blocked nada.

When the insider program has the message that it's over (close to launch...), does this mean installing the last build on a pc for first time won't work or?

It is my understanding you need to either have W10 on already, so you can get the latest via update, or download the iso images from the net someplace.  I don't think MS has yet released iso for 10240 build.

If you can find an iso for 10166 with license key and put it on you will likely get the update for 10240.  The other guys at www.tenforums.com would know more than I.

I was under the impression the OP wanted something that would put the monitor into the desired resolution without having to drill down manually into the setting.  But I could be mistaken.

My Belkin kvma switch used to set the screen mode when switching to another machine, even if the monitor was already in the desired mode.  There was some reason they did it that way but I can't remember it now.  :)

In a round-about way. But I hear most were pyramid schemes.

Those can be such a grind.  I hear many Egyptians worked themselves to death to get in on the ground floor.

With small buttons works fine.
Is more sthetical too, but i prefer see well. So I will mantain probably the big ones.
In windows 7 i have three lines, but with small icons...
Some icons don't help me to give good appearance.... simple letters to remember , animals icons....
I know i know, but .....
 :tellme:

On Windows 7 you could try 7Stacks

I made categories of shortcuts.  You can have the stack expand as a curved line or as a rectangle.  The only issue I had was sometimes an icon would turn to a plain paper icon.  This is a Windows 7 problem.  But I got around it by storing a custom icon in a folder and selecting it for Custom Icon in the stack.

The original web site is not responding right now.  But you can still download it from softpedia using their link.

yeah, I think you're right - there's also the option to "Never Activate".
I posted more because I was suprised that unlike addons, plugins cannot be uninstalled. (And there's a few here I didnt install e.g. "Primetime Content Decryption Module provided by Adobe Systems, Incorporated 11"). So yeah, it was a more general comment.

To uninstall Firefox's Flash plugin you need to download an Uninstaller from Adobe's website.

shrugs :-\

Or for plugins generally in Firefox do
about:plugins
to see where they live and pick them off manually.

I just look at my bank account the day after payday... no resistance required.  :(  :P

But how do you resist on the day of payday? :P

A dollar down and the chase is on.  :)

I just hope none of the new ones act like that ancient word processor in Naked Lunch

Miles I don't see clear.
Is able moveit of re-scale a window ?
Because the problem is with windows than in the selected resolution are very big i think...

 :-[

Please just try Winkey click l on a window and see if it snaps to the left half of the desktop.  If not then it doesn't work. If yes then you can manually resize it.  You can click anywhere on the window to change the size if the window is resizable.

Sure is configurable, but I would like to know if these windows are scalable because seems only prepared for one size and not sizeable.

You can also Winkey left click, then press a letter such as 'c' anywhere on the window.
Click on the MoveIt tray icon once for About Box with the hotkeys.

Instead of giving in to the temptation to buy the 4.0GHz 32GB-RAM powerhouse, I settled for an incremental improvement: upgraded RAM from 6 to 8 GB, and moved the OS to a 120 GB SSD.

Speaking of SSD I am waiting for the promised "price plummet" with the 3D stacked memory technology or whatever they call it.  Give me 1 TB for $50 or give me a 500GB USB 3 stick for $25.  I am tapping my foot until they deliver.  :)

odd,
it's impossible to actually uninstall from Firefox - no simple method anyways: uninstalling Flash in programmes list doesnt remove from FF; no option within FF to uninstall plugins (unlike addons).
This page may shed some light on it.

I use FlashBlock extension.  It may stop some sites from reacting(like ESPN3) but you can disable flashblock to use flash on those if you want.

An alternative is to run in a sandbox like ToolWiz TimeFreeze or Sandboxie.
