General Software Discussion / Re: Need Advice on Forum Software
« Last post by mouser on December 10, 2009, 12:26 PM »
Regarding suitability of SMF (Simple Machines Forum) -- the forum software we use here on DonationCoder:

I think SMF implements one of the best combinations of hardcore forum features while remaining easy to administer and manage.  Full stop.
It's free and while not technically open source, is close enough for most people.

However, it does not excel in some of the areas you mention, including the c,d,e,2,3 areas you listed above regarding multimedia, social networking, download repository, and ancillary stuff like wiki.  It has no CMS features to speak of, and it sounds to me like you might be better off with a CMS that includes forum functionality as part of it.

There are a lot of modifications for SMF, but the mechanism for extending SMF is pretty messy and i'd avoid it as much as I could if i were you, and instead look for something that includes all the features you already know you need.

i think this would also be a great idea -- it's one i've thought about quite a bit.  as superboy says there are some reasonable tools that do this already, but lots of room for improvement.  I actually have some unique and cool ideas for this project, though they are a bit involved. if someone in serious about doing this and has some intermediate-to-advanced programming skills and time, and wants to work on it -- contact me and i'll tell you about some of my ideas.

I'll also mention that i've had some bad experiences with motherboard bios getting damaged or failing during a flash upgrade, so the motherboards with dual bios chips or other protections against such things are very appealing to me.

One thing i've noticed about motherboard is that some tend to focus on features for overclockers; personally i dont do any overclocking it just makes my brain ache looking at all of the options for speeding up memory access etc, and worrying about stability.  so when i look for a motherboard i focus mainly on features and stability.  that's one thing that can help you narrow down your search.

I don't know how i forgot to say what gexecuter just mentioned -- whether you like the board he recommended or not, go search on newegg for motherboards and read the reviews there!
The user reviews on newegg are very informed and it's the very first place i go to look for opinions about computer hardware.

Choosing a motherboard is the perfect example of being overwhelmed and drowning in seemingly-impossible-to-evaluate features and choices.
So you have ddr2 memory, that narrows some choices down.  And all of your hard drives are sata, is that right? so you dont need IDE support?

I think this discussion misses the point to some extent: the goal is to eliminate false positives, not explain them.

Well sure, but the problem is that it's hard to think of concrete "regulations" or guidelines that would reduce false positives.  In addition the antivirus companies are scored based on number of detections and rarely if ever on the number of false positives so they have little motivation to reduce them.

So I think this award is a recognition that we can't get rid of "false positives" but instea is an attempt to make sure that when an antivirus does alert, it is honest with the user about the assessment of the situation.

In my opinion, I would rather have an antivirus pop up an alert to me saying that it found something that *might* be problematic, and give me enough information to decide if it is, than to keep quiet or scream that the house is on fire.

EDIT: One thing that would reduce the number of false positives is if antivirus benchmarking sites evaluated and scored and reported on the number of false positives in antivirus products.  I'm not sure how our award could address that though.

Here's another idea: Image Aligner

I sometimes have a few screenshot images or cropped screenshot images, and i want to combine them into one, usually by aligning them in a vertical row, or horizontal row -- sometimes by aligning into a grid.  And then saving new combined image.

It would be nice to have a gui application that let user drag and drop images and arrange them in this way -- actually the issue of what kind of user interface would be needed is a very tricky one -- but potentially a really useful one.

I guess ideally one would like to be able to specify what to do about size differences -- do we shrink, enlarge, perserve aspect ratios, etc?  What about background color if blank spaces, etc.

Lots of details that could make the program more fancy, but i think you get the main idea.

N.A.N.Y. 2010 / Re: NANY 2010 Program Idea Suggestion Thread

Ok here's a pretty serious idea for a program, and one that is definitely a lot of work -- but i think it would be useful:
A hand-holding simple XML editor that is restricted to creating xml documents that are compliant with a specified dtd or schema file.

There are quite a few very elaborate xml editors, some are really complex.  And there are some reasonable free ones too.

But I was thinking there is a need for a really dumbed down simple handholding one, which was designed to guide and help the user create and edit xml files that comply with a specific dtd/schema definition.

The idea is that such a cool could be used as a gui configuration tool for specific applications and web services that provide dtd/schema files -- helping the user to create just the objects and properties supported by such files.  The goal would be to hold the user's hand and make it easy for them to create compliant files.

Just as an example, in a recent project I did (http://www.tfdocs.com), i use an xml format to describe documents -- but it's really hard for people to follow the rules to make these xml documents.  So I made a dtd file that basically defines the rules and hierarchy and properties that make up a value tree form xml document.

Now i could make a custom tool to allow gui creation of these documents, but if there was a super simple xml editor that could take this dtd file and then walk the user through creating a compliant xml file that would be ideal.  I can even imagine having an accessory file (or comments in the dtd file) that would provide more information to the xml editor to help guide the user.

Newsletter for December 9th, 2009
"The NANY Event Begins"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings everyone, and welcome to another edition of the DC newsletter.  It's 19 degrees where I am in Champaign, Illinois, the wind is howling outside, and 2010 is fast approaching.  And once again it's time for everyone's favorite event on DonationCoder: N.A.N.Y. (New Apps for the New Year).

The N.A.N.Y. event is where we invite, cajole, blackmail, bribe and just generally beg all of the programmers who pass through the site to pledge to release some new piece of free software on January 1st.

The idea is simple, and everyone is welcome to participate regardless of their skill level.  There are no winners, but everyone gets a prize -- a very handsome DonationCoder mug commemorating the event.

Last year's NANY event saw over 30 applications submitted (including some really spectacular ones!) and was written up all over the web.  And your favorite characters from last year are back again this year to help make it another success -- especially DC member Perry Mowbray (himself a coder) who has so generously taken on the task of coordinating everything.  Let's make him proud and show him that we appreciate his efforts by creating some cool new software.

If you're a programmer, stop by now and pledge to participate.  Especially if you're a long-time DC regular: We *NEED* you to participate!  But even if you've never posted to our forum before -- we'd love to see some new faces along with the regulars, and this is your perfect excuse to jump in and say hello.

And if you're not a coder, stop by and give some feedback to those who are, as they post teasers about the projects they've chosen to work on.  If you're a blogger or have a website, there are some badge graphics you can put on your web page to let your readers know about the event.  There's also a thread where you can post ideas for coders who are having trouble coming up with a project idea to work on.

You'll find more information about NANY in the threads below, along with photos of the awesome coffee mugs we'll be sending to participants, but let's review the basic guidelines for participants here:

  • Pledge that you are participating on our forum well before the New Year -- post a teaser about what you plan to create.
  • Release the application on or before 31st December 2009 (we'll be posting a roundup article about all the entries on Dec 31st).
  • Any type of application is acceptable: Windows, Linux, Mac, Web, iPhone, Android, Script, Plugin, etc.
  • It must be free (or donationware) for personal use.
  • It needs to be something that hasn't been released publicly before November 2009 (updates to existing programs don't qualify).
  • You keep all the rights to and control of your software, this is just an event to encourage coders to release new free tools.

2. NANY 2010 (New Apps for the New Year)

The NANY event is one of the very best things we do on the site.  If you know any coders, please give them a nudge and ask them to come by and give us a little bit of their time.  We know sometimes it's hard for coders to come up with good ideas, so we started a special thread just for people to post project ideas for others to consider working on; don't be shy posting your ideas.  And if you're a programmer, why not stop by the Pledge thread now and pledge to release something new by December 31.  Help us make it something special -- we promise to make it fun!

3. Your Input Requested

We welcome everyone's participation on the forum, no matter what your level of computer knowledge or how long you've been a DC member. If you're still waiting to make your first post, see the links below for some good places to jump in.

4. DonationCoder Software Updates

I've released minor updates to several of my programs this month, getting them all running smoothly on Windows 7.

5. Other DC Member Software and Projects

We love to hear what DC members are up to, projects related to software or otherwise.  I guess the really big news in the last month or so has been that Eric Wong's CircleDock program has been revived by DC member Markham and a couple of other people on the forum, and is enjoying a well deserved and exciting rebirth.  If you haven't checked it out yet, it's a very cool dock/launcher utility, that is one of the more popular software downloads on the website.  Plus f0dder's very cool simple text self-encrypting executable notepad tool has been updated.

6. Website Discoveries, Debates, and Discussions

What's new on the world wide web? What fun new sites have forum members discovered?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Let's find out..

7. Discounts and Giveaways

We've got some fun discounts and giveaway drawings in December, on a new notetaking application (AllMyNotes Pro) written by a nice indie developer, and on a heavy duty professional-grade background backup tool that some power users on our forum have been raving about (ShadowProtect Desktop).  Drawing will end on Dec. 15 and discounts at the end of the month.

8. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the forum fall into the category of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. This is one of the most active sections of the DC forum and a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we've split the recent content into to sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software discussions.

9. Specific Software Discussion

This section of the newsletter draws attention to some of the standout discussions about specific programs that have been started since the last newsletter.

10. Developer's Corner

If you're not a programmer, don't let the title of this section scare you away - there is likely something of interest to you here! It's more than just a forum for the discussion of software development, it's also where we discuss web design, entrepreneurial struggles, and general productivity issues.  It's great to see that the section has been pretty active over the last few months -- keep it up people!

11. News You Can Use

DC Member Ehtyar produces wonderful weekly summaries of important tech/computer/security news articles that he comes across on the web.  A big hit on the forum.  We're still wondering how he keeps up the pace and when will he collapse from exhaustion?

I'd love to see some tools for managing and viewing my Amazon.com wish list and saved items.  It's a huge pain to work with such a large list on the amazon.com website because they are spread out over so many pages.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Simple self contained data collection tool
« Last post by mouser on December 09, 2009, 10:44 AM »
I suppose, thinking about it some more, that while 10 years ago this would have been a fantastic idea -- today with everyone on the web, and the web interactive forms so easy to make now, that this falls into the category of things that could be done so much better and more easily as a web application.  I know you said you would prefer a standalone app, it's just that the extra work and hassle of that is hard to justify, plus not to mention that doing it on the web saves all the trouble of putting the data together into a database, etc.  The advantages of a web-based solution are just so numerous that it makes the idea of a standalone app pretty unappealing.

Couple of related ideas for web page projects:

1) "What's my share?"  Lets you put in a total amount, and then a list of people and their percentages -- it should then calculate how much each person owes.  This one should be pretty simple and there are no doubt existing versions of this on the web. still might be nice to do a new one and then add features to it. -- claimed/pledged by dc member krish

2) "Rank Em All" - Needs to be built on top of a cms like system that lets users create accounts and groups.  Basically users are organized into groups.  Each group has a page of products (any member of group can add a new product).  Each user then can RANK the items in the group to arrange them into some order (nice drag+drop javascript effect would be nice).  Then on the group page you can see each person's ranking as well as the average group ranking.  Would be fun for keeping track of things like board game rankings within a group, etc.  Could also be used for making purchase decisions -- everyone in the house gets to vote for a ranking of which product to buy -- and you buy the one that is the group top choice.
