Hmmm, that guy is everywhere as lately, so it could be him. I think he stole some kind of teleportation device, and Harry Potter's invisibility cape, giving all the mischief he has caused. We need to set him some kind of trap, it's going a bit too further ;D

As for the video, setting aside it looks like a highly edited record, I'd like to read Darwin's take on the matter :)

Living Room / Re: Do you archive/store your downloads (mainly install files)?
« Last post by Lashiec on October 07, 2007, 04:26 PM »
I should mention that my text file only contains real descriptions of the files, or more precisely, the name of the program, component, etc. It does not contain the name of the real file, so I have no way to relate the description to the file, at least in theory. The relationship is in my head, and I'm pretty good at interpreting weird file names :D. And I always can view the tooltip in executables, or open the compressed files.

So, mitzevo, I'm a bit lost when it comes to your other question. Are you talking about something like what brett asked here?

Pretty complicated setups you have here.

My choice is dumping all files in a single folder, there's no version control, so that means once a new version is out, the old one goes to the recycle bin. As for extensions, addons, plugins, etc., they have a separate folder, and they're organized in subfolders with the name of the application to which they provide the additional functionality. I also have a generic folder for standalone components (like, for example, TrID's filetype database). Drivers, free games and game patches also have their own dir, as well as specific Windows updates (specifically, .NET Framework 3 and DirectX supplemental runtimes). My lack of version control also applies to the rest of the files.

Finally, I have a text file which contains the description of all the files dumped there.

Yeah, that's also a pretty good option. I overlooked it :-[

Ars Technica or Daily Tech. I would also mention any of the tech blogs around the net, but they're too centered in gadgets.

The long changelog, complete with a download of the alpha? beta? version. Read next two mouser posts that thread to learn a bit how some news things work. Really, despite mouser's concerns, it's my opinion that the current version is ready for mass production ;D

Well, you are an Opera user (or used to be ;)), so you have the mass downloading available at a click. You only have to open the "Links" window, filter the links by whatever rule you want (it would be "mp3" in this case), select any link(s) you fancy and hit the "Save" button. Of course, you have to go page by page... Opera also pops a little window in the right down corner, but can be deactivated in "opera:config" if I'm correct.

The FlashGot extension for Firefox does have a "Build gallery" function that lets you arrange a list of things to download from various pages. You have to set everything manually, using filters and regular expressions, and you need a external download manager as well... maybe the best option would be using wget or HTTrack :-\

And unless you're really into retro/steampunky/literature sort of stuff the game's environment won't impress you.  How many Ann Rynd freaks play games, anyway?

2112 ;D

And don't worry, you don't need a water cooled SLI machine to run the game. It runs perfectly fine on relative cheap hardware (no, a GeForce 6200 Turbo Cache is not one of those ;))

Storing data online? OH NOES! There are quite some caveats with that solution. Ars Technica made a review not long ago of backup hosts, and the big picture was not exactly comfortable. Besides, how can you assure the reliability of your host? Unless we talk of a BIG company, there's no guarantee they'll keep your data safe (and even in the case of the big company...).

Besides, really, who is going to keep data backups for 20 years (in the same medium I say)?. Now people comes out of every corner to prove me wrong ;D

A question that is bugging me. How can you restore data with the PaperBack alternative? :P

Surprising news that I had to share it with you guys. Read the announcement and its details :o

Capture-2.jpg

Well, basically they're releasing the fully commented code of a good number of libraries, and they'll do the same with some others later. Looking at the license I'd say (don't flame me ;)) that looks like a nod for the Mono developers, but most probably my reasoning is wrong. They're also bringing integration of this effort with the debugger in the future Visual Studio 2008 (take a look to see what the integration is all about), but people in the comments don't seem to give a damn about it ;D

Developer's Corner / Re: Software Copy Protection Questions
« Last post by Lashiec on October 03, 2007, 09:06 PM »
Emmm, actually hardcore gamers are the group that is less patient when it comes to play nice with content protection. Gaming forums are full of people complaining about DRM in games (BioShock being the latest one, which was handled quite nicely by Irrational), and some incidents were quite public (like when UbiSoft games started to bork because of Starforce and the company decided to not use that evil protection anymore). Hardcore gamers go as far as to buy a reedition of a game if it does not include copy protection. In the other hand, I know several hardcore gamers that complain about copy protection and, at the same time, their practices give companies more reasons to f*** us...

Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, and it also depends of how people use the computer. Looking at the measures you take before installing the game, I'd say that you're a casual gamer but a power user, so it's natural you're cautious about what software does to your PC. Your average user is another story :)

As for tinjaw question, I don't know what would the best choice, but ensure you have some balance between your rights as a developer and our rights as users. That means, choose a strong software to protect your game which does not annoy your buyers, by playing nice and uninstalling cleanly, so rssapphire does not have to do so many checks before enjoying the game ;)

But hey, maybe you should go old school and make a copy protection scheme ala good old Lucas Arts or Sierra On-Line :D
1768
That's funny, isn't it? It turns out that a proprietary OS gives you more freedom than a open source one. You can read, but be careful when you copy that... it's the software flavor of DRM. Makes you wonder why the FSF act like freedom palladins while you need a lawyer at your side if you intend to code something using that "free code"... no freedoms for anyone, as the users don't really care if a program is GPLed or no, they only understand "free" or "not free". Licenses are not something they usually read (nor anyone :P). To conclude, BSD FTW!

Living Room / Re: Wiki Democracy
« Last post by Lashiec on October 01, 2007, 01:16 PM »
There's a little problem with the article, as by the time it was posted, the page was not accepting new ideas, and people in charge closed it to prevent addition of new ideas while they reviewed and cleaned up suggestions towards the final redaction of new laws. Now they're published, so you can take a peep. It seems some of the discussed ideas were preserved, but not the entire debate, which is a letdown (maybe The Wayback Machine or Google has a copy?). I should mention that not only New Zealand residents, but people from around the world could contribute to the wiki (yeah, it sounds a bit awkward to have a Spanish resident decide on the laws for New Zealand :)).

I know that the general public opinion is not that smart regarding how politics work (the same politicians aren't either ;D), but giving ideas is something that everyone can do. It also helps raising the transparency of the process, as you know that even using the available mediums to follow political discussions, you miss much of the "hidden" talking going on, first in the political parties, and then between the representatives outside the parlament (I won't even mention how much you can miss with the mass media). It also introduces more views on the matter, as political parties tend to be quite monolithic these days.

I suppose the wiki maybe was open to debate following this very forum organization, in the sense that everyone can voice his/her opinion, but not to take on others thoughts (not on wiki fashion at least).

Oh, one last thing. A place where this kind of wiki democracy could work like a charm is within a local government. Cities are small enough (maybe gigantic metropolis aside) for everyone to discuss what should be done and what not, as they don't involve creation of new laws, at least not complex ones.

Unless you resource to expensive solutions (namely RAID 0 and/or fast SCSI drives), there's no much you can do, really. The 20% sounds like another myth to be (there are so much :() as I worked during years using a drive with a 15% of free space. It helps on defragmenting, but nothing else. There's some truth in trying to avoid the free space to fall below 10-5%, as the computer starts to feel much slower, but nothing else regarding specific free space percentages.

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes summarised the most importants points about Linux lack of success before we started discussing the matter. Worth a read, even if everything mentioned there has been discussed here :). Be sure to read the follow-up as well.

I could also put the link to the lengthy article that leaded me there, but I stopped reading it as I found the point the guy was trying to make was totally nonsensical. I should know that, as it starts with a bad understanding of one of the phrases that Mr. Kingsley wrote (it should be said that the sentence by itself means a completely different thing of what the author intended).

Hmmm, Steve Jobs would kill for Apple to be BMW :P

Good point, Carol. I forgot Mac OS X is built on top of UNIX foundation code (even if that line was supposed to be a joke ;D).

So, what about AmigaOS 4? No wait, that one is also built on top of old code. So, what's left? The picture is turning pretty grim.

I'll tell you

Spoiler
Mac OS X, but he'll deny it ;) ;D

I suppose if Windows 7 or 8 is the new OS from scratch that people is demanding, that would fit the bill. As for Linux, well, maybe they'll fix their way. They have really interesting ideas for the whole OS and its application catalog, but the gurus should start to think outside their world and get the big picture (particularly Mr. Stallman ;D), as I think it's quite possible to cater both newbies and power users alike (yeah, including terminal zealots ;)), as Windows proved through the years. KDE 4 is near, and so far it seems that it could bring a real advantage in (desktop) innovation compared with Windows, so I expect the other developers take advantage of this momentum to offer something really attractive to the rest of us (both users and developers).

That sounds like a interesting book. Would you happen to recall the title?

As for nudone question, I'm more a guy of events in a slideshow, like your usual PowerPoint presentation. The events more or less situate themselves in time, so no need for the timeline, as I can easily know the exact moment in time with the visual information.
