General Software Discussion / Re: Altap Salamander now freeware
« Last post by rjbull on August 10, 2019, 03:48 PM »
[...] Paid file managers are (almost) always better than freeware file managers.

I [...] settled to the Total Commander
So did I, in 1999  :)  It was the first thing that made working with Windows almost semi-tolerable.  I have licences for Ztree Win and XYplorere too, but TC is the one I practically live in when at the computer.

On the other hand - I carry a USB stick around with me, and I've left it stuck in a computer in the library a couple of times.  My limited experience of USB stick encryption was not very delightful, and I wondered about what free software to put on an unencrypted stick, so that someone picking it up wouldn't benefit from my licence (and wouldn't be able to broadcast it all over the Internet).

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they aren't out to get you, right?

Outlook has its own world (and maybe PIM clones like Essential PIM?)

EPIM (at least the Pro version) has its own built-in email client, if that's what you mean.  I haven't tried it, but it's there.

I haven't noticed anyone post that the Altap Salamander file manager is now freeware - did I just miss the post?

Altap Salamander download page

Download Altap Salamander 4.0 - Freeware
Altap Salamander (including all plugins) from version 4.0 becomes freeware for both commercial and non-commercial use. Users of older Salamander versions can upgrade to version 4.0 free of charge. Version 4.0 requires Windows 7 or newer. There are not other limitations compared to commercial version 3.08.

This is the first post I've seen on DC, but it's just been mentioned by 'Gizmo': This Commercial File Manager for Windows is Now Freeware

I don't understand the wording of the press release, though.  Do they mean that only the new v4 is free?  V4 doesn't support (at least, they don't say it does) Windows earlier than 7.  Some of us are old-fashioned...

I was into FreeCommander until the 64 bit hurdle kind of messed up the evolution of it.

Don't overlook
Both of these come in 32- and 64-bit Windows flavours, portable versions too.

Once I suggested that they might have an archive feature, where your pages could be kept on your disk, for those that vanish or become 404s.
-Steven Avery (July 20, 2019, 07:23 AM)

You might try Local Website Archive (LWA, free and payware versions) by Aignesberger Software, author of the more famous WebSite-Watcher.  If you need to keep exact copies of web pages offline, it's the best I've seen.  Usually I only need redacted fragments, which I keep in notekeeping-program-of-the-week, but for perfect copies, this is the thing to have.

Given that Aignesberger Software make these two excellent web-oriented programs already, it's a pity they haven't offered an alternative to Linkman, LinkStash, etc.

QuickImageComment:
QuickImageComment displays EXIF, IPTC, and XMP properties of digital images (e.g. JPEG and TIFF) and allows to edit them. [...]
only seeing this now, looks very impressive
Doesn't seem to show Picasa's name tags.
Well, it only says it supports EXIF, IPTC and XMP, which as I understand it are all established standards.  You could ask the author about adding Picasa - but he might not be interested in a proprietary program that's been abandoned.  Speaking of which, Google at one point owned the Nik collection, and offered them free of cost.  They're now owned by DxO, who are charging for them again, and at more than a casual impulse purchase price.  Maybe Google should sell Picasa on to someone else, but really, the market for digital imaging software must be pretty saturated

Why not just use a sticky notes program?  Stickies (free) and Notezilla (payware) have been popular on DC.  There are many others.  I generally (from inertia) use Magic Notes (payware).

Maybe you should look for threads on "snippets," like this one?  best code snippet tool that works with any program

Or maybe TypeItIn?  No longer free, but the (old) last free version is Last Freeware Version Page 5

Another program, "Ka Type In," has gone from the normal Web, the author's site is up for sale.  I retrieved the installer from the Wayback Machine and attach it here.  But maybe it's too old.   :-\

The best course of action would be to have a dual screen system but the earnings from the program do not justify the expense.
In that case, I wonder if the earnings justify immediate notification...  Another hypothetical approach.  On a single-monitor system, could you harness a macro program to bring the window of interest to the front, run the notifier, then return to the previous status?  And, set it to run both from a hotkey for ad hoc checks, and also from a scheduler so that it would check for you when you were at lunch, or the coffee machine or whatever?

I've never used a two-monitor setup, so don't know if this is feasible.  Could you have two monitors, with the window you want to watch the sole item on one of them, perhaps pinned to be always on top to be sure, and do all other work on the other monitor?

General Software Discussion / Re: Good auto clicker for specific needs?
« Last post by rjbull on March 26, 2019, 06:19 AM »
You don't say what version of Windows you're using, what software you've tried, nor what exactly the web site is.  All that is potentially useful information in this kind of query...

Unless you have special requirements, you may find it better to try a completely different approach.  Have you tried a Download managerw?  Don't miss the Comparison of download managersw either.

I use Internet Download Manager.  It isn't free, but it's good value, and says it can do what you ask; see Internet Download Manager Features.  Or, I think Free Download Manager can also do it.

If you really must have an auto-clicker, you may need one with reasonable intelligence and at least basic scripting.  Try PTFB Pro ("Push the Freakin' Button").  Or a full-blown macro program like Macro Express.

Easy Screencast Recorder / Re: Display keystrokes in video?
« Last post by rjbull on March 20, 2019, 04:53 PM »
It's a good question.  Have you tried Skrommel's "ShowOff"
That's the best one yet.  Thanks for the pointer.  Skrommel is a marvel.

Discussed here as well: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=792.0

I'd like to hear what features you'd like to see added in such a tool.
Skrommel points out that what ShowOff shows is what happens at keyboard level, but I'd like to see "real keypresses" in the sense of what the user thinks they're doing too, so that "Ctrl+D" is shown as exactly that.  Perhaps both methods could be available as a choice.

Skrommel's comment (that I don't think he went on to implement)
Maybe I'll show all keys pressed, just adding up until all are released again?
would be good too.

I'd like a GUI configuration.  I realise one can edit the INI file, but I'd guess most non-coders would appreciate not having to delve into hex codes for colours, for example.

Is there an inconsistency in the INI?  In the comment block at the top it says

;timetohide             ;time in ms

but in [Settings] it has

timetoshow=1000

Although ShowOff's display is described as a window, you can't resize it, and it isn't big enough for some keypresses, e.g. Shift+Ctrl+Alt+Win+Z, which I have configured for one program (that I don't use very often).  It might be nice to have a thin border round the window, as a bit of psychology, to emphasize that what's being shown is monitoring what's happening, not the event itself.  The default black on white colour scheme underlines this; if you put ShowOff on top of the white background of another program like an editor, say, it can be a bit disconcerting to see text being apparently typed twice in different sizes.  That probably means that the default colours should be something else.  Besides, white-on-white makes it hard to see where the window is for when you want to move it.

Most of this amounts to cosmetics, which indicates that ShowOff is basically sound.

I did a quick search for screen recorders that included showing keypresses.  The only one I could find in a hurry that actually claimed to was Movavi Screen Capture Pro.  I'm surprised this feature is (apparently) still so rare.

Easy Screencast Recorder / Display keystrokes in video?

I can't see an option to echo keystrokes to screen and have them captured in the video.  Have I missed it?

Otherwise, please can someone recommend a separate tool to do this?  I've tried those below in conjunction with FastStone Capture rather than ESR, but wasn't happy with any of them, and some are getting a bit old, too:

I'm not sure it's exactly what you want, but have you looked at FastStone Image Viewer?  Grab the tutorial from the Download page too; it's old, but may give some helpful hints.

The OP mentioned TreeSize.  From idle curiosity, I entered it into AlternativeTo and found WizTree, which claims to be the fastest of its type and certainly seems like it, much faster than WinDirStat, but doesn't address the more-than-one-file question.

Also, FolderSizes, which apparently can:
You can now search for folders based upon the number of files and/or subfolders they contain. This criterion can be based upon the immediate file/folder count, or the aggregate file/folder count (which includes counts from nested subfolders).
But it's a heavy-duty tool - 27MB and $60.

Nir Sofer's SearchMyFiles can show number of files per folder in Summary mode, but you'd still have to eyeball the report, or post-process it.

Catherine Fisher's Chronoptika Quartet; YA time-travel.  Vivid, energetic, engrossing, bleak.  None of the main characters are really sympathetic, but you understand what drives them.
Catherine Fisher writes: I have always thought the idea of Time Travel fascinating, full of paradox and speculation and opportunities for adventure.

If you had the power to change previous events to bring back someone that you loved, would you do it, even if it changed the world? In Venn I wanted to invent a man so deep in guilt that he has lost the ability to care about anyone else.

Into this dilemma I wanted to mix all the old folklore: the wintry isolated house, the dark wood, the beautiful, deadly Shee and their ageless, changeless land; the eccentric inventor, the opium dens and alleys of Victorian London.

I wanted a story full of variety and mystery. And above all, enjoyment.

Automatic Screenshotter / How to capture a transient window?
« Last post by rjbull on February 17, 2019, 04:33 PM »
I tried to install the TWAIN driver that came with my scanner.  All I got was a window that flashed up on screen, instantly disappeared before I could read it, and nothing else.  I'm pretty sure it was saying that the driver wasn't compatible with my old Vista, but it would be nice to be certain.

What's the best way to go about capturing such a transient window, please?
