Living Room / Re: How can we market Donationcoder.com better in 2010?
« Last post by mouser on December 31, 2009, 06:10 PM »
All of us who know zaine know he wasn't thinking about "marketing" like they do in businesses or anything commercial like that -- i just wanted to post a clear reply so that people who don't know zaine would not get the wrong impression.

"Promote" is wrong too.

This entire world is filled with people who spend 90% of their effort on marketing, promotion, pr, advertising, and 10% of their effort on creating useful stuff.

I'm very proud that DC is about creating things and having fun being part of a close community and isn't trying to become the next big thing.

That's not to say that it's not important when other sites that we respect write about the things we do, it is.  Some of the events on our site like the NANY programming thing, work best if other people hear about it from sites we respect -- and when we release new software or write a new review, we want people to hear about it.  But let's keep our focus on creating things and having good discussions, and making it easy for people to discover us.

Terms like promoting/marketing/etc just rub me the wrong way -- i think it conveys the wrong impression about the nature of the site and our focus.  Let businesses worry about maximizing profits -- let's us worry about creating the useful content and community.

I appreciate the sentiment but I hate the idea of "marketing" anything.. I'd really rather not think of things in that way.

Nothing wrong with asking how the site can do a better job of being useful to existing and new members and i'm always happy to talk about that -- and maybe even how we could do a better job of explaining what we do and reaching people who don't know about us.

I just think our focus should be on doing good stuff -- let the big sites with public relations people worry about "marketing".

« Last post by mouser on December 31, 2009, 02:03 AM »
Anuran is great!

One thing i would suggest for next version:
When user hits Close button on the popup, it should:
1) check if any text has been input in the box -- if not, just discard entry.
2) if text HAS been put in box, save it;
3) OR prompt user and say: hitting close box will abandon the note -- in order to save notes just hit enter.

I like it.

One "bug" -- i think if i leave any of the hours/mins/secs blank its an error -- i think it should assume 0 if they are blank.

« Last post by mouser on December 30, 2009, 09:21 PM »
Actually i realized there is a 3rd reasonable alternative for how to normalize when there are * entries, which is to replace the * with their computed explicit shares.

might be overkill though.. i think it's very functional as is.

« Last post by mouser on December 30, 2009, 08:57 PM »
There really are only 2 sensible options when normalizing with *:
  • one option is to simply do nothing
  • and the other option is to do what krish is doing, to 0 out the * and normalize the rest

you never would want to normalize a list with * entries unless you wanted to remove them?

except possibly as step 1 of a process whereby you expected to do further tweaking of shares.

That's basically by design i think, buy maybe the alert box triggered when you click Normalize should tell you whats going to happen and let you cancel.

I was expecting the web look-up to appear within FARR so it took me a few moments to wake up to the fact that another tab had appeared in my browser.

that's why you can choose internal or web search.

Be nice if one could choose the web look-up site.
agreed, i'll add this to advanced options.

Be nice when the dictionary knows how to spell. At the moment it seems to use some strange tongue called...  American!
readme points to additional dictionaries you can download and configure from advanced options, including some british dictionaries, etc.

In 2008 I posted about RoboKill, an amazingly polished flasharcade-style game.  One of the most polished game of it's type that i've ever played.  And now here comes the sequel! You can play a big chunk of it free, and purchase access to the full version.

From JayIsGames:
Fans of the original will find a lot to like in Robokill 2, and newcomers with a taste for robots and top-down mayhem may well be wooed. Even if you don't decide to buy the game, the demo itself is tremendously fun and offers substantial meat for you to dig into. Robokill 2 doesn't revolutionize the top-down shooter genre; it just shows how it should be done.

It would be helpful to me if you run the updater and right clicked on farrspell, and said to "install update" even though same version.
and see if the problem happens again -- it may have been because my initial release had a bad .dcupdate file.

New version (v1.03.01) uploaded with context menu to lookup a suggested word online.
17393
1) Not impressed that it automatically took all my existing files and placed them in subfolders without asking (hint, a prompt would have been nice). Resulted in a "WTF !" but was easy enough to work out and undo.

You're right -- the new autofiling option is on by default in the new version; at least on first use it should come up and tell user what's about to happen and give them option to disable.

2) Flickering looks improved but not really sure if it is fixed (here is hoping).

This (and accompanying slow reloading of display with large #'s of screenshots) will be fixed when i finally integrate the new thumbnail panel code i've written.

3) Still have the problem where it sometimes forgets my settings for highlights (specifically 'Inner Color' off and 'Line width' = 3')

ok i'll look again -- i think i fixed the transparent value being forgotten.

4) Have a new intermittent (but frequent) problem where the Screenshot captor appears in the task bar at system start. Have set to start when system starts. Please note this started with 2.77.01.
i know the problem, ill look into it again.

Watching videos (http://link.brightco...693?bctid=1778578839 and http://link.brightco...693?bctid=1778578839) i'm afraid that xtabber might be right, that the form factor of the Plastic Logic device is 8.5 x 11" , but the screen is a lot smaller.  Also looks to be incredibly slow.

More dreams crushed.  :(
17395
a 10.1" screen is no where near large enough - an 8.5x11" paper is about 13.75" diagonal.

No idea why amazon launches though.
if there is a www. at front, that might be why.

as for why its not calling allowprocesstrigger maybe you aren't telling it that you want to be called for that? there is a place in dll where you tell farr what things you want to be notified about?

working well.. very cool!

the msdn ones dont trigger a search for me.. i think you may have to add http:// to the urls.

amazon searches results seem a bit iffy.. here's my search for neural control, which should yield quite a few results:

the reviewer claims that "In the near future, the minimum donation to gain the license key will be $50". huh?

they are refering to text shown to first time donators on the donation page:

"Sometime in 2009 we may begin charging $50 for a deluxe lifetime membership that includes all past and future software on DonationCoder.com and other special access on the site. With all we offer we think that's a bargain, but for now we want you to decide for yourself how much it's worth to you and how much you can afford, and choose an amount you feel good about.  Until the new changes are put in place, a donation of any amount will get you this lifetime deluxe membership."

That basic text has been on that page for over 2 years now I think..
