Flash Game of the Week: Robokill
« on: May 29, 2008, 03:46 AM »
This has to be one of the slickest and most polished flash shooter games I've seen.  It's extremely well done, and highly playable.  Reminiscent of the arcade game Robotron, but with greater depth.

Very nice

You had me with "Reminiscent of the arcade game Robotron", so I had to try it.
One question... I was playing level 1 and the second room I just ran around the room perimeter shooting the robots in the middle. More robots spawned than I could keep up with, and so eventually I just crashed into the crowd and died. Is there a more effective way?

Long review at JayIsGames.com: http://jayisgames.co...2008/05/robokill.php

ps.
this is a pretty long flash game, but after you play through the first mission (several stages long), the further missions are locked unless you pay $10 to unlock the rest.  personally i was so impressed by the game and the length of the free mission (which is longer than i play most flash games anyway), that i decided to send them $10 to show my appreciation.

I have to warn anyone considering purchasing the $10 full version of this game:

Beware.  The full version has some big levels, with lots of cool new weapons and enemies.  It's quite addictive and will eat up a good chunk of your time.  So if you have a lot of work to accomplish, please thing twice!  ;)

In all seriousness, as someone who is not all that fond in general of these kinds of shooters.. I have to say this is one of the most impressive, fun, addictive, balanced, playable shooters i have ever played.

I was so impressed with the coding of this game that i went looking for more info on the developer.  Found this little interview: http://www.gamestren...el-Reitzenstein.html

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the cool feedback! We spent a lot of time making Robokill as smooth and polished as possible.

For those that are interested, we are releasing a new version on Monday with balance and gameplay tweaks and fixes.

Welcome to the site RSA (is it Michael posting?).

I finished the full game today -- VERY addictive.  One of the best and most professional flash action games I can remember playing.  Big thumbs up from me.

I finally had some time to give it a try today. Pretty good game so far. The first two missions were way too easy but the third missions has about a good challenge to it. The only time I've actually died is when I accidentally walked off a ledge into the abyss somewhere.

Seems good so far.

Okay I just beat it. That last mission was actually a bit challenging, but with no penalty for dying other than sometimes robots reclaiming a room, I had no fear of death. I only died a few times.

One strategy I found was that if you clear a room before destroying any of the orange cargo containers (which seem to contain nothing besides traps anyway) you get the shield recharge bonus. Then if you destroy a container with a trap, the room locks again and when you destroy the trap you get the recharge bonus again. That worked pretty well since most of the time the trap was a weakling spider or enemy that could do no harm if you let it crawl in your face for five minutes. :)

I'm not sure if I'd buy it though. It was by far the best Flash game I've ever played, but $10 is actually a significant purchase to me right now and there are all kinds of other games being released these days for around the same price vying for my dollar. I'm looking at you, WiiWare!

Although, if the stupid Defend Your Castle can make it to WiiWare, I see no reason why Robokill couldn't. I might actually enjoy this game more if I could use the Wii Pointer to aim and the nunchuck to drive around.

In fact, I pledge right now to buy Robokill for Wii if it ever makes it. I'll even buy it twice so I can "gift" it to my brother.

WiiWare has a fairly relaxed set of criteria to include a game in the service, so I guess it's a matter of their creators to talk with Nintendo about it.

Only looked at the screenshot from mouser's first post - brings back memories of Alien Breed. I think I'm gonna give it a try... but I better fix some dinner first, if it's half as good as mouser insinuates ;)

Very cool game. I ran out of energy (mentally) on my first run-through after reaching level 8 experience and mission 3, but I'm gonna give it another shot. Will have to try the low detail setting for the game on my somewhat slow computer -- some of the rooms were bogging down the CPU/GPU with too much going on.

JUST completed the free part of it now, must say I quite enjoyed it - pretty well balanced, just the right amount of die/retry frustration - enough that the game isn't supereasy, but not enough to make me want to smash stuff.

I really like the graphics and sounds, the whole atmosphere of the game. Certainly has some Alien Breed feel to it, if a bit simpler/easier. I'd love to see what the team behind Robokill could do if they produced a native non-flash game...

I played until I made level 16 so I could try out all the available content for the free version. What a fun game. I never had too much of a problem staying alive, I guess the shield boosters were all that I carried in my Upgrade slots though. I also used the same strategy as Deozaan, keeping the traps for after the action as often as I could. Great game by http://www.rocksolidarcade.com I enjoy the Stunt Pilot game too.

Thanks for the cool feedback everyone! I agree that WiiWare would be a good fit for the game, we are definitely looking into it.

ace, we don't do that kind of stuff here (sharing license keys etc.)

while i would personally like to see all software switch to a donation-based payment system where people can pay what they want and can afford, i think it's important to support small independent developers.

ok , but i found a cheat on the internet that on mission 4, if you go straight up, into the room w/ the 8 robots, and head off the edge & repeat, the cash on the ground will pile every time you do so. You can do this as long as you want, and when you're done, pick up the cash to find LOTS of money there(depending on how long you go) 5 min w/ no cash sensors will = about 6-8k of cash (there's 4 on the ground) so you may get 24,000-32,000 cash!

For those who bought the game, there is new mission, with new powerful weapons and harder enemies.
