General Software Discussion / HyperSnap now installs toolbar, without asking?
« Last post by rjbull on April 20, 2010, 04:24 PM »
Copy of an e-mail I just sent to Hyperionics:

I have a single-user license for HyperSnap, so I installed it on my USB stick.  I just upgraded to the most recent version 6.80.01, installing on top of the last one on my USB stick.

1) Installation process thinks you want to install to hard disk, even though the box for portable USB is checked. That is, the Browse for the target  installation directory seems to point to the c:\Program Files etc. and one has to take extra steps to navigate to the USB stick.

2) Installation put a Hyperionics toolbar in IE. I didn't see it ask for this - granted, I may have missed it - but I certainly didn't see it, I absolutely do not want it (I check on new versions using WebSite-Watcher) and it's taken me time and effort to remove it. I'm still not sure I have it completely removed.

Please, don't do this.  I got so angry I've deleted HyperSnap altogether.

I should add, it installed the toolbar for both Firefox and IE.  The Firefox add-on was easy enough to uninstall, though I then had to re-start Firefox to complete it.  The IE toolbar was much harder to get rid of, as mentioned above.  The toolbar seems mostly about checking the latest versions of Hyperionics products.  I'm not prepared to waste screen space on that and resent having to waste time on removing it.  This misbehaviour seems new, I don't remember it from earlier versions.

It also means that the "portable" installation isn't truly portable, because it interferes with whatever host machine you install from, setting Registry keys.  I should haved used Total Uninstall; I didn't expect to have to do that with "portable" software.

And instant (as in, sent e-mail, posted here, went to bathroom, checked here, checked e-mail) response from author Greg Kochaniak;

Hello Robert,
Sorry about this trouble. I tried to not offer and not install the toolbar
when the portable setup is selected, but maybe I made an error in my
programming. The setup asks if you want it for a regular installation. I'll
look into it and fix it if necessary.
The toolbar is removed completely after you uninstall it from Windows
Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs (on Windows XP) or "Programs and
Features" on Vista and Windows 7.

Greg

Can't reply fairer than that (and note that I did say I might have missed the option).

[...] Typing Assistant (5.0) [...] And to mimic regular typing experience, all IMEs use the space key as the "break" to separate one word (character) from the next. As a result, most text expanders run into troubles when an IME is on

I'm surprised Typing Assistant doesn't work.  I don't know where the author's based, but his name looks Chinese to me.  So, I'd have expected TA to do the right thing, especially as you can configure Auto-Complete by various keys other than space.  I generally use the digit in the popup list, but maybe that doesn't work in your situation.  I'll e-mail the author.

I serched through web and couldn't find any decent materials

One of the books I found useful was one by Dan Gookin, Advanced MS-DOS Batch File Programming.  You could try Advanced Book Exchange (ABE) to look for a copy.  Gookin intends to put his old stuff online: that hasn't happened yet, but he's made some of the companion disks freely available on his Wambooli Archives site.

More useful batch stuff here: Getting started with batch files

f0dder's right about having to work around batch file limitations.  In which case, don't overlook Horst Schaeffer's Batch tools & utilities for the MS-DOS operating system, where you can many word-around aids.

Living Room / UK amateur photographers: if you're good, don't use Boots!
« Last post by rjbull on April 13, 2010, 03:02 PM »
Customers of Boots (the UK pharmacy chain) face interrogation over the origins of their photographs, if those photographs look too "professional."  The company's attitude appears to be that if a photo is good, it can only have been taken by a professional, and a customer wanting a copy is engaged in copyright infringement.

This came to light when Boots refused to print pictures taken by a photography student because she couldn't prove who she was, either with a letter of introduction, or headed notepaper.

Boots admits photo copyright blunder

Another example of the abandonment of the principle of "innocent until proved guilty," the use of copyright as a blunt instrument for beating money out of people, and insane oversensitivity to legal issues?  A patronising insult to capable photographers in the UK.

What I hoped it would have that it doesn't is the pasting of a vector version of my signature - for that I still have to use Inkscape.

Would it be acceptable to have a separate PDF of your signature, and add it to the end of the main data PDF using, say, PDFTK, if you want a freeware?

Post New Requests Here / Re: GUI for XXCopy

Why make a GUI for XXCopy, when you could use the free version of SyncBack ?  I mean, surely the point of XXCopy is that it's command-line, for automating routine tasks without using a GUI?

Your choice, but it sounds odd, a bit like something that was once shareware and is now freeware, but where the author hasn't bothered to remove the licence requirement.
We'll stick to what we say, it's totally FREE.  In the meantime, there's a business reason for it, we could talk about privately if you'd like.

I see that posts since mine have continued that theme...  Both convenience and trust matter here.  If there's a genunine reason, fine, but I'm automatically wary if a company/author whose reputation I don't already know adopts a slightly unusual "registration policy."  No offence meant, but you're new to me and this is the Internet.

My scenario is of routinely running a user account under Vista Home Premium.  Installing anything means temporarily elevating to administrator, [...]
Interesting point on security with lesser account.  My concern is even as admin equivalent user the Vista and even 7 keeps complaining / asking for confirmations all the time, which is extremely annoying.  A guess is, the majority of the users use admin equivalent account, your thought?

I just don't know.  I'm doing an IT support course, and thought I'd better run things the way one is supposed to in Vista.  But it's such a pain that I'd not be surprised if most people gave a blood-curdling scream of frustration and turned UAC Off.

•100 MB download?  I thought UltraRecall was big enough, and that's only 10 MB.
The FAQ section mentions that the KN itself is only 1 MB, however, the software
comes with a web server, a web scripting language (Railo) and some other stuff like
an Access database, hence, they adds up.

Eesh!  That's not just the tail wagging the dog, the dog's a chihuahua and the tail's a Great Dane!  :o

•KN = "knowledge notebook" expires in 30 days, then you have to ask for a free license, albeit that's then in perpetuity?
This is a way to engage users.  When we say it's FREE it is free.  A decent company
will stick to its words.

Your choice, but it sounds odd, a bit like something that was once shareware and is now freeware, but where the author hasn't bothered to remove the licence requirement.

•You have to turn UAC Off?  At least, the installation instructions say turn UAC Off, but they don't say whether KN will work properly thereafter with UAC On.
The instructions say "you may want to..", which implies that you don't have to, meaning, a user can leave UAC on to successfully install Knowledge NoteBook.
How could we word it better (clearer)?

My scenario is of routinely running a user account under Vista Home Premium.  Installing anything means temporarily elevating to administrator, i.e., Windows wants me to put in the admin password.  Once installed, most programs then run correctly under the user account.  I think I wanted to be clearer about whether KN would do so too, or whether certain features were only available under an admin account, so it was always best to run KN as admin, which is an extra step and a nuisance.

  • KN forces IE during installation, and IE7 or later is the primary browser, even if Firefox is permitted?

I want files individually stored so I do not lose everything if a database corrupts.

I know what you mean, but the big advantage of a single-file database, as I see it, is that it's easy to back up, provided one takes the trouble to back up.
1743
I run Total Uninstall Pro on Vista Home Premium.  It gives a lot of information, see screenshot.

a zip made on one machine could be compared against a zip made on another machine.

Would this be better done with one of the utilities that make CRC or MD5 checksums?

I've been swearing violently because Archivarius3000 kept launching with Windows (Vista Home Premium, user account, UAC On) despite me (apparently) telling it not to in its configuration (Integration tab), and setting WinPatrol Plus to stop it.  In the end I've had to launch Archivarius3000 as administrator to get those settings to stick.  Not WinPatrol Plus's fault, but I don't think Archivarius should have forced that, as I installed it to my user account.  Just hope it really does stick after a reboot.

RunIt! - http keleos DOT h11 DOT ru

I used to have RunIt! on Win98SE.  Nice features, but my system never seemed stable with it, so I haven't tried it since.  My chief dislike about FARR is its sheer size, also complexity.  With a bigger HD I do have it installed, but rarely use it.  Mostly I use Horst Schaeffer's PopSel or Qsel.

When installing programs, I often tell WinPatrol Plus to disable them, only to have it constantly popping up to tell me the program is back again, and after a few times popping up the browser to go to WinPatrol Plus's Web site.  I suppose I either have to temporarily disable WinPatrol Plus during installations, or make a note of the offending program and disable it after a reboot.  Not WinPatrol Plus's fault, but very annoying.  "Offending" was a considered choice of word.  So many programs insist on running on Windows start-up when I really don't want them to.

I know this isn't the answer you wanted, but, doesn't your laptop have a key for that already?  Mine has.  The (blue) Fn function overlay key (situated between left Ctrl and left Win keys) operates with keypad right and left arrows to increase and decrease volume, and as a shortcut to silence, Fn-F6 silences the speaker altogether.  The keys have the extra functions shown as blue icons.
