Developer's Corner / Re: AHK : multiple hotstrings
« Last post by Armando on January 06, 2008, 07:56 PM »
Ah! Thanks guys.

Lanux : That's what I was doing already, but I didn't want to paste the string repeatedly : it's not convenient when you make changes to the string.

jgpaiva : Exactly what I was trying to do.  :) The "send" command. Ok.

Developer's Corner / AHK: multiple hotstrings
« Last post by Armando on January 06, 2008, 07:21 PM »
I guess I could post that simple question in a specialized forum, but I know many here are AHK experts so...

I make an extensive use of AHK "auto-replace hotstring" (to expand abbreviations as I type them).

Now, I'd like to know how to have multiple potential hotstrings for the same string replacement.

Example. Let's say I have this line :

:oc:parc2::tgsPÉtRe tgsPunié tgsPdoct tgsPThDo tgsPARC2 tgsPat tgsPthée

but I want to have more than one hotstring ("parc2" in that case) to trigger the string replacement "tgsPÉtRe tgsPunié tgsPdoct tgsPThDo tgsPARC2 tgsPat tgsPthée". (For example : I'd like to have "parc3" and "parc4" to trigger the same string replacement.)

What would be the proper syntax?

Thanks a lot!

thanks jgpaiva.

i'll send you my ini file right away, before I make any changes to it.

A year ago, or something like that, I downloaded GTD and outlook pdf from the David Allen Company... I was curious. So I now use a combination of a GTD system, with some traces of Covey and Rodger Constandse (Achieve Planner, Effexis Software). The syncing with my palm, using Outlook categories + priorities goes pretty smoothly, I find.

I can have my appointments + todos + contacts + some basic notetaking application with me all the time, in my pocket, without needing to carry a computer, paper, etc.

Buying a palm was probably my greatest technological move in the last 2-3 years. It takes a bit of time getting used to it. But once you have a system that works, it's just great.  :)

PS : I could share my system with you if you want... But not now : I have to many things to do... In couple of days... Only if you ask  ;D

Hummm... I just installed the new version, and Gridmove consumes a lot of CPU power for about 1.5 min, right after launching or reloading, and then it calms down. Anybody experiences such a thing ?

BTW, the cycling works well.
Like you jpaiva, I'm not sure how useful that will be but it's another tool... Who knows...

Right now the hotkeys are :

CommandHotkey=#g
FastMoveModifiers=#

Could I change them to (because they conflict with FreeSnap's own hotkeys):

CommandHotkey=+^#g
FastMoveModifiers=+^#

I tried, but it didn,t seem to work...

And should that parameter have a value :

FastMoveMeta=

Thanks !  :)

Buy a PDA and call it a day ;D

That's what I's do too (I sync my outlook tasks with my palm -- Outlook is pretty malleable so you you can pretty much do anything you want there, even task hierarchies, with a bit of creativity).

But what's not working with your present system?
1707
Does desktop and PDA along with source control.

PDA ? I can't find any reference to PDA use with todolist on these pages. Where are they ? Thanks!
1708
i could add commandline features to add points so it could be scripted.
Could easily setup some AHK global hotkeys to add points for some things I regularly do.

And yes, yes  :-[... it would of course make it easier to use with AHK! Don't really need any MS macro I guess.
1709
I see. So I guess one would then have to script a little macro in Outlook -- or something along those lines -- to interact with Point Motivators commandline features?

General Software Discussion / Re: Managing projects with OUTLOOK
« Last post by Armando on January 06, 2008, 01:35 PM »
I just updated the first post of this thread : Action Project Manager has been released. So, for those interested and project management with Outlook, here's another one. Overview : http://www.outlooksy...anager-overview.html

(also added Zoot to the list)
1711
I like it too but I'm having some trouble trying to integrate it in my current work flow. I mainly use Outlook (and maybe SQLNotes too in a few months) to track my projects, tasks, etc. and it's "hard" (for me) to consistently remember to add points to Point Motivator on top of marking outlook's task/events after completion. It feels too much like a separate entity. I wonder if could be integrated to other PIM and Time management programs (whether it's Outlook or other programs, like todo list -- I don't know what its license allows exactly)... maybe with the help of an AHK script ???

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Very simple timeclock utility
« Last post by Armando on January 06, 2008, 01:57 AM »
It's lovely, isn't it ?
I've tried exporting the log, but didn't do anything fancy.
Like I said in my previous post, the only thing that bothers me at the moment is that the comments inserted with the "add comment to log..." don't show in the log window. It's not that important though... Titlelog just helps me to find out were all my precious time goes...

Anyhow... I'm impatiently waiting to see if someone more experienced will be able to answer your request...  :)

I'm sticking with Winamp too (I just find it very ergonomic, pleasant to use and, after all, not that resource hungry), but will keep foobar for certain situations -- when I'm impatient and need to hear a wav file instantly...

Considering that thousands of other forums have useless crap and have thousands of idiots, DC is a gem in the rough..

 :)

about content tagging, etc. Why not if it's not too obtrusive. (BUT, ahem, let’s not forget that they might have the reverse effect than what one expects — anything that's perceived as subversive provokes curiosity.)

I think I understand your feelings and opinion, CodeTRUCKER.

If DC was to evolve in a direction that didn't correspond to my expectations anymore, I'd just stop posting (and reading posts). Unfortunately ;) this forum seems to be populated with so many  mature, sound and knowledgeable people (it's its greatest asset)… I don’t see myself “leaving” because of a lack of intelligence and respect.

The very positive influence of  a quite a few people (like mouser, especially, but also of all the other great posters like CarolHaynes, lanux128, app103, nudone, Darwin, jgpaiva, f0dder, Tomos, nontroppo, etc. etc. -- there are so many of them) really gives the tone. They all constitute the foundation and the embodiment of DC’s ethics. Much better than enforced censorship if you ask me…

We should still be able to rely on trust and basic (tacit)  moral guidelines, and leave the forum as it is (unless, the tagging idea can be nicely and transparently integrated)… while remaining vigilant. Of course, we should try avoiding subject matters that could excessively offend, and try to avoid to participate in these threads… if we do think they’re offending (or too touchy). It’s a personal matter of knowing-feeling when something can get out of control, uselessly offend and hurt.

All that said, let’s not forget that context is a big part of how to interpret stuff. In the context of DC, the "youporn" link for instance is not just a link to porn. It's information, it's the manifestation of healthy curiosity and humor… always with a computer twist to it. I’m happy that we can at least try to post about anything (even remotely…) computer related…

DCs current “gravitational” force will be the best “judge” of a thread/post’s validity-legitimacy-sincerity… or even functional fit for that matter! And members’ intelligence will usually bring an interesting twist to it. Never underestimate what seems stupid or vulgar : you never know what can come out of a weird or "offending" thread!

“censorship” doesn’t help education or growth. It just hides the object of our fear or desire and we never get the chance learn how to deal with it properly. Of course, tagging for children is another story…

I hope I haven’t been too incoherent or out of place… It’s too late for real good thinking. Good night everybody!

Teaching - good!  :D
Thesis - bad!  :-[ :( :'(

Oh man, are you living the story of my life or what. I taught US lit and translation at the university where I live for 10 years, never even thought of trying another job when I graduated. The teaching part was awesome, I miss it greatly. The writing part was something else entirely. In those 10 years I gave only one conference presentation, well received too, because I was speaking off the cuff, rather than reading my paper... because I couldn't be bothered to write it all down! Then I realized the net and computing in general were much more fun than writing a thesis on a topic in literature, and never even got as far as the title page. So after 10 years the university and me parted ways.

Teaching really, really good! Thesis ugh.

So Tranglos, I saw from your website that you do/did a bunch of stuff! Are all the programs there your own creations? (Like the magnificent KeyNote, for instance...??)... I believe they are, of course. So all I can say is : WOW.

Tranglos and Armando - I'm glad you two were able (strong enough) to walk away. My forehead is bruised and I am tired from the exertion of beating my head against any available hard surface (wall, desktop, etc.). For now, I must keep trying (er, perhaps that should be start trying! Like tranglos I've yet to write anything "concrete" just lots, and lots, and lots of ideas and notes...).

Thanks for sharing guys (and wish me luck?)

Darwin! I know how you feel, and I sincerely hope that -- at least -- you  enjoy parts of your research. If you're like most perfectionists, you probably tend to indefinitely postpone the moment of redaction. So... you should "just" start your first draft ASAP. When do you think you'll start giving a shape to all that material you've been collecting? (of course... who am I to tell/ask you that...  :-[)

Armando, sorry to hear that. it sounds not so good but i wish best of luck with your future endeavour.. on the other hand, it's nice & enlightening to hear discussions about your respective dissertations.

Darwin, the same to you too..

Thanks Lanux. Fortunately, it's not toooooo bad. A bit of an identity crisis I guess, but that's the story of my life (communication, music, literature, theater, psychology, teaching, computers...). I'm not worried about my future though -- luckily, I usually succeed at what I do!  ;)

Most importantly, I want to enjoy my future projects. The last 3 years have been painful, so... Time for some nice change!

btw, it's my 2222th post (inspiration from Curt).. :)
 (see attachment in previous post)

That's a lot of posts... But you'll have to run faster to catch Darwin.  ;)

Well, guys, 2 weeks ago I've decided to leave both PhD and SSHRC grant behind for now. I've just become so sick of it. Art theory, I've had enough.  :(
Now, I don't know what I'll do next, but it just can't be worst...

Yes, thanks Marjorie, it's not too long : after reading your post and the link your referred to http://www.student.o...f_speech_synths.html
I've decided to listen to the Acapela voices (Heather in particular), and I'm very impressed. It's probably the most natural voice I've heard until now. Thanks a lot for all that info!
