right, i want to use a general purpose pc using a standard OS, with standard usb/keyboard/etc.
16752
I have not yet decided what OS to run; but i dont want to purchase something that locks me into one or another OS.

The truth is that my intent is to use this pc as more of an art piece, to drive a touch screen lcd that will be mounted on the wall in a picture frame.
So as for what will be running on it -- all manner of interesting displays, simulations, art, etc.  But it will probably also be used to play music.

haven't gotten that far in thinking yet, but it's really just for lan usage.

I have a project in mind that involves having a pretty low-power (but not trivial) pc that is always on.

Assuming that hardware cost is not the major factor, what i wonder is whether it would be better to use a low-powered laptop or one of these small low-energy home-theater type pc's.

The thing's that concern me are:
1) energy use -- since it's always going to be on.
2) hardware longevity (i worry that a notebook won't fare well being left on 24/7).

Note: While i would like to use this pc to stream audio, i will not be using it for heavy duty video processing (no dvr, no video streaming); so my concern is not having the cpu power to do the things i want to do.

Thoughts?

General Review Discussion / Re: Opinions on remote PC control software

the next time someone does a roundup of these tools, once feature that needs to be listed is which of these programs can support multiple view-only remote connections connecting in at the same time, which is important when you want to demonstrate something to several people.

Unicode Image Maker / Re: 1.02 works 1.08 dosen't

can you explain a little more what the problem is, i'm afraid there are only a handful of people on the planet who use the program so i don't get many bug reports.

but i'm not sure what you are saying is wrong with v1.08, so could you try to elaborate a little more to help me reproduce the problem.

one thing to do is see if there is anything in your launch history that might be showing up.  you can right click in launch history to clear it.

i'm fairly positive what's happening is the screensaver is kicking in on top of the away message executable.
try right clicking on your display and checking out and previewing your screensaver settings.  try setting the screensaver to something else other than MPQ.

Long time DC member April Russo (app103) has a neat blog and shares with us today some clipart and photo sites she uses:

When you are a blogger, web designer, developer, or creating a product for resale, you might need photos for your posts, templates, and other designs, but you can't just use any photo you find on the internet. That would most likely violate someone's copyright and get you into a heap of legal trouble.

So what are you supposed to do if you don't have a camera or any photography talent?

Stock photos? Sounds good, but most stock photos cost money.

Creative Commons licensed photos from Flickr? That could be good too, but that requires a link back and there may be restrictions against commercial use. Can you imagine having to put a long Flickr URL on every t-shirt and mousepad you make?  How would you go about giving proper credit on a small 125x125 ad? And if you are making web templates it might not be the best idea to trust people that use your templates to keep the credit links intact.

So where can you get a whole bunch of great photos to use, that don't require a credit link, won't cost you a dime, and allow for commercial use, too?

Fortunately for you, I have done some research into this and found quite a few sources.

OK.  Not only that, but when it shows the other messages, it shows it in the default font that is not in my settings.
maybe because its the old version running as screensaver? (what are you trying to fool me twice!!!)

BUT: I found out that it has something to do with %PROGRAMFILES(X86)% and %PROGRAMFILES%.
When %PROGRAMFILES% is checked, the search is not complete (it happens as I've described before).
When it is unchecked, both Opera executables are found.

now that is VERY strange!!!

i have a theory about what might be happening..
you launch the exe with commandline parameters to set away message right?

and then what might be happening is after some delay.. the screensaver is kicking in -- on top of MPQ running as a standalone app.

i'll fix.

damn that is really strange.. so it's not even sometimes using the quote fonts? if you press spacebar to randomize and generate new layouts, it's always using the default white font for your quick away message?
