General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« Last post by Armando on January 12, 2008, 02:03 PM »
It's a nice product. But after all the problems the customers have had with GemX, it' could be a bit hazardous to invest (in time, mostly) into an application that might have no future.

Did you want to do something in particular? There are so many other note taking applications around.

Living Room / Re: Laptop hard drive... 5400 or 7200 ?
« Last post by Armando on January 11, 2008, 05:38 PM »
As I suggested before, I finally got the Hitachi Travelstar 7K2000 200GB ((HTS722020K9SA00)

Data transfer went without a hitch--  I think it took about 3 hours (didn't find any precise log info about the whole operation) with True Image to clone about 78 GB of data (the Hitachi was in an external enclosure and plugged via USB). Of course, when I finally put the Hitachi in my laptop, it just booted normally as if nothing ever happened... Well, almost.  :)

- Speed HAS improved, although not as much as I thought (especially for backups and indexing -- understandably since there many other factors involved here) : loading huge documents, databases, bringing the computer out of hibernation, etc. is faster. Maybe, what... 30% faster ?

- Temperature is about the same (maybe 1C more),

- A bit more noisy it seems (nothing to complain about though),

- And, mush more space.

I must say I'm happy overall.

Of course he did not say that! Gizmodo's title (and mine  :) ) was only to catch people's attention.  But then it does seem  that Gates implied that Vista needs/needed more polish... and a diet too and a few personal trainers.

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Re: WinManagement Snap!
« Last post by Armando on January 09, 2008, 09:00 PM »
What other features (if any) do you think you might add?

I forgot to answer that question...
In terms of features, I didn't really think of any others for now, but if some have suggestions, who knows.  :)

Hi Ampa! Thanks for bringing this to my attention.  :) Looks like a fun script.
Actually, this was just a tiny little exercise for me... The script you're referring to is more elaborate and its features are a bit different since it supports multiple-monitor. WinManagement Snap! (based on jgpaiva's WinManagement and Blue Onion Software's FreeSnap) is mostly to quickly change windows size and shape; so it's main point is to resize a window in the direction you choose, up to the screen border. It also other things, like indicated in the first post of this thread.

Looking at the WindowPad's features, we see that it doesn't exactly do the same thing -- it's more "zone" oriented, like GridMove.

;   Move and resize windows with Win+Numpad.
;     Win+Numpad1 = Fill bottom-left quarter of screen
;     Win+Numpad2 = Fill bottom half of screen
;     etc.
;
;   Move windows across monitors. For example:
;     Win+Numpad4 places the window on the left half of the screen.
;     Win+Numpad4 again moves it to the monitor to the right.
;
;   Quick monitor switch:
;     Win+Numpad5 places the window in the center of the screen.
;     Win+Numpad5 again moves the window to the next monitor.
;     (This works by monitor number, not necessarily left to right.)
;
;   QUICKER Monitor Switch:
;     Win+NumpadDot switches to the next monitor (1->2->3->1 etc.)
;     Win+NumpadDiv moves ALL windows to monitor 2.
;     Win+NumpadMult moves ALL windows to monitor 1.
;
;   Other shortcuts:
;     Win+Numpad0 toggles maximize.
;     Insert (or some other key) can be used in place of "Win".
;

;   Concept based on HiRes Screen Splitter by JOnGliko.
;   Written from scratch by Lexikos to support multiple monitors.

Ahah! Yes, it probably does (make, ahem, "coders" out of users).
I think that I always wanted to "code"...
I Hope I'll have more time to learn.
Maybe I'll do like superboyac and learn a bit of C/C++.  :)

Thanks guys.
It's not much, really.  :-[
It's basically freesnap + WinManagement (by jgpaiva)... Without the "Undo" feature.
But it was fun to "rewrite", yesterday, to take the taskbar in consideration.  :)

Nice!! Thanks Brett. The new version seems to work really well !

Sometimes I'd like to be able to resize the window, but it's a detail, really.

Oh... another butterfly... ;) (I can perfectly understand the butterfly problem...)

(my winamp uses win+arrows too)

I've remapped WinAmp hotkeys to ctrl+Alt+arrows. Fairly intuitive combination, I find.

OK, I made the modifications. it should now work whether the taskbar is visible or not, and wherever it's positioned on the screen. Try it and tell me if it works as expected.  :)

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Re: WinManagement Snap!
« Last post by Armando on January 07, 2008, 05:12 PM »
Thanks everyone! I just came back.

That's because armando is using (in the same manner as i was using in winmanagement) the A_screenheight/a_screenwidth variables, which don't take into account the height of the taskbar.

Exactly  :-[

If you'd like to solve this, armando, see this page, specially:
SysGet, OutputVar, MonitorWorkArea,1

That allows you to get the values of the top, right, bottom and left of the screen on the following variables: OutputVarTop, OutputVarRight, OutputVarBottom and OutputVarLeft.

[edit] added explanation[/edit]

Thanks jgpaiva ! I shall take a look at that and try to understand... later tonight when I have 5 more minutes! :)

Of course, it would be easy to add many many more features (like scrolling up/down a window -- although that might be a bit tricky for me at that point)... Anybody can modify the script anyways, but if there are other suggestions, I can try...

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / WinManagement Snap & AHKSnap !
« Last post by Armando on January 07, 2008, 12:42 PM »
Ok, so here's a modified version of jgpaiva's WinManagement AHK script (my first try at a "real" AHK script).   :)

It doesn't need farr to work and is now a kind of FreeSnap clone... without the undo feature (sorry...) and the incremental resizing (I think that this can already be dealt with properly with Grid move anyways...)... BUT, of  course, with some other features (already existing in WinManagement) : 1-Maximize vertically or horizontally, 2-Toggle On Top/Not On Top, and 3-Maximize/Restore window

Here 'a description of the hotkeys/features (these are mere suggestions : to modify the hotkeys, just modify the script) :

Snap window's borders to edge of the screen :
--------------------------------------------------
WinKey + Up  : snap top window border to screen edge
WinKey + Down : snap bottom window border to screen edge
WinKey + Left : snap left window border to screen edge
WinKey + Right : snap right window border to screen edge

Move window to screen corners :
----------------------------------

WinKey + Home : move window to upper left corner
WinKey + End : move window to bottom left  corner
WinKey + PgUP : move window to upper right corner
WinKey + PgDn  : move window to bottom right corner

Maximize vertically or horizontally :
---------------------------------------

Ctrl + WinKey + Left or Right : Maximize horizontally
Ctrl + WinKey + Up or Down : Maximize vertically

Other common window management :
------------------------------------------

Ctrl + WinKey + PgUP : Maximize/Restore window
Ctrl + WinKey + PgDn : Minimize window
Ctrl + WinKey + Home : Toggle On Top/Not On Top

Here' the compiled version + the AHK script. To run the uncompiled script, you need to have AHK installed (download it for free).

Edit : 2008 01 07 : new version to better deal with the taskbar.

Edit : 2012 03 20 : completely revamped script by Lanux. See end of thread.

no, it's not that hard replicate FreeSnap's functions with AHK but since FreeSnap is already available, why not use it as some sort of internal app? e.g. those with FreeSnap already installed will get the extra features. just my 2¢..

(This might be a bit off topic, but since the discussion started here... But I can move it if you want.)

Actually, I think that cloning freesnap with AHK would be a good idea : freesnap is pretty inflexible : can't really change the hotkeys, which is annoying since it monopolizes a bunch of keys, some I never use (Windows Key + I, Windows Key + K Windows Key + J, etc. because they’re not convenient for me)

So, inspired by your Winmanagement Script, jpaiva, I "cloned" freesnap  :P. There are  certain missing features : there is no undo (it would be complex for me to do that…  BUt if you can explain me how to do it, I’ll add it) , and no incremental window resizing... I could add that eventually (with the combination of Win  + or - keys). So I could post it here if you want.

Of course, shortcut keys can be changed to one's liking by modifying the script!

i'd love to see how your system works but i'm trying to keep the solutions as low tech as possible - that means sans palm, pda or any of its ilk.. :)

heheh. I can certainly understand. :)

thanks, i'm going to try that in a few days.

BTW, here's a link to a review of some Continuous Backup utilities.
That review fails to mention whether the apps simply detect change & copy file, or if they use a filter driver and thus only copy over THE EXACT CHANGES. This might seem a bit anal, but it's pretty damn important if you have data files of several gigabytes where only a few megabytes change.

Hummmm... Yes, I remember you mentionned that there : File synchronization: moving away from incremental backup (HELP!)

MirrorFolder probably does exactly what I want since they say it can synchronize documents/files through USB flash/hard drive

How do I synchronize my documents/files between my home and office computers through my removable USB flash/hard drive?

For this you need to setup mirror for the same source folder on both your office and home computers to a single folder on your USB drive. Now enable the following options for the mirror folder on both computers.

    * Synchronize on startup or when connected
    * Mirror under current logged on user account
    * Compare file size and last modified time stamp
    * Bi-directional synchronization
    * Copy file differentially with block size (enable this if you have relatively large sized files and only a small section of them are modified normally)

You may also enable archive options to archive older and deleted versions of files into a third location on your home and/or office computers.

Haven't had time to properly test MirrorFolder yet (ie., giving it some really stressful testing), but it seems to be able to do the job well enough. The problem is that if the connection to the server is lost, iirc you have some relatively long timeouts when working with your local files. But I guess there's not much you can do about this, as long as windows filesharing is used, instead of a custom protocol.

I see. Thanks f0dder.

In my case, I was  more or less thinking of using it with an external USB drive as a kind of RAID mirror replacement for when I'm working at home (when my big external USB drive is available). Better then nothing...

So I'll have to see which software does this best, and maybe invest some $$ if it seems like a viable solution (not too resource hungry, and reliable)

An alternative to RAID MIRROR in your workstation, you could do real-time syncing

Since I only have a laptop, this would be the only viable solution (+ my usual daily backup system on 3 different HD, of course...  :))

What would you use for that (IBM's Tivoli Continuous Data Protection? MirrorFolder?) -- I remember you were looking for something some months ago for your job at the museum  ;)....  And does it consume a lot of resources ???

f0dder: you use your RAID MIRROR as an "instant restore" backup system ? impossible to use that system with a normal laptop (not talking alienware here...) i guess...
